The purpose of this article is to study Jean Baudrillard’s thought processes and his path of thought of “illusion” in the article Aesthetic Illusion and Disillusion. The article is composed of four main sections, focusing on the evolution and replacement of the concept “illusion” by illustrating different domains in the contemporary world demonstrated in Baudrillard’s article: the “disillusion” of art and films, the “simulation” of images, the “advertisement” of objects and the “ideas” of art theories. Through excerpts and analysis, it comes to a conclusion that Baudrillard seems to be utilizing the relationship between art and “illusion” to respond to the problems of contemporary art, but in fact he uses the concept of “illusion” to connect the flow and changes of the entire contemporary world.

This article discusses the presence of the body in contemporary art and culture, with reference to the relationship between body, image and writing in the encyclopedic work of Peter Greenaway - more specifically in his 1996 film The Pillow Book. The aim is to show how the sign body, taken from the perspective of multiplicity, occupies a privileged place in the repertoire of images and concepts of the British artist, in sharp contrast to the marketing vision of the body that prevails in contemporary world.

Pagrindiniai žodžiai: sekuliarizacija, menas, religija, nihilizmas, Ch. Tayloras, Vattimo.SECULARIZATION, ART AND RELIGION OR – WHAT IT IS – SAN SEBASTIAN?Rita Šerpytytė SummaryThe article deals with the meaning of secularization as the challenge for contemporary world and considers the ways that secularization affects religion and art as well as their mutual relationship. Different concepts of the meaning of secularization are discussed and their ontological perspectives are highlighted. The attitude, that it is namely the ontological emphasis of the meaning of secularization that enables us to explain its challenge for contemporary world, is being justified. Based on this perspective, the relationship between religion and art in the contemporary world is analyzed and interpreted. The article also focuses on one of the tendencies of contemporary art, i.e. the tendency of conceptualization. Not only by interpreting certain works of art, but also elucidating different strategies of contemporary art, the “mutation” of the religious sense of “religious” art is disclosed. The analysis shows that the secularized meaning of art flourishes through its “alive” and “active” religious meaning. The conclusion is drawn that the analysis of the contemporary relationship between religion and art enables us to disclose the ambiguity of secularization – its sacral and profane sense, a certain dialectics of the process of secularization. Keywords: secularization, art, religion, nihilism, Ch. Taylor, Vattimo.

This chapter explores the relationship between music and physical gesture, drawing on recent research on the spontaneous gestures that accompany speech. Such gestures appear to be motivated by thought processes that are independent from speech and that in many cases offer analogs for dynamic processes. The chapter outlines the infrastructure for human communication that supports language and gesture as well as music. This outline provides a framework for exploring how music and gesture are similar and for how they are different. These comparisons are made through analyses of the movements Fred Astaire makes while accompanying himself at the piano in the 1936 film Swing Time and those Charlie Chaplin makes to Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5 in the 1941 film The Great Dictator. These analyses further explicate the role of syntactic processes and syntactic layers in musical grammar and introduce referential frameworks, which serve as perceptual anchors for syntactic processes.

It has long been recognized that much of the richness of Muslim women's ritual lives has been found outside of both the mosque and the “five pillars of Islam,” in a wide set of devotional practices that have met with varying degrees of affirmation and censure from male religious scholars. This recognition has given rise to a valuable literature on such practices as shrine visitation, spirit-possession rituals, and Twelver Shiʿi women's domestic ceremonies. The prevalence of such noncanonical rituals in Muslim women's lives, although waning in many parts of the contemporary world, raises questions about the relationship between women's religious practices and the constitution of Islamic orthodoxies. Have women, often given lesser access to mosque-based and canonical rituals, historically resorted to autonomous and rewarding religious practices that are, nevertheless, fated to be marginalized in the male-dominated construction of Islamic normativity—a normativity that women may ultimately internalize and master only at great cost to their religious lives?

Following the recent wave of globalization, the possession of different types of knowledge became even more important for economic development than the possession of physical resources. The ability of a society to adopt existing and create new knowledge thus gained fundamental importance for its wellbeing. In this paper, we identify important aspects of the relationship between education, creation of knowledge, economic growth, as well as both material and immate?rial wellbeing of a society. We describe potential problems that prevent societies from maximizing the benefit from the effort its members invest in acquiring knowledge. The problems of failure of the national markets for education as well as the global migrations which lead to drain of knowledge towards economically highly developed countries are especially analyzed. In the long run, they lead to a decline in both national competitiveness and different aspects of the immate?rial wellbeing. As the basis for solving these problems we propose a combination of economic theory and the concept of solidarity between more and less devel?oped countries, individuals and societies of their origin, respecting the free will of individuals.

The paper deals with aesthetic and sociological questions, posed by the increasing role of the visual in everyday cultural practices and particularly in contemporary art. In this context the theories of Jean Baudrillard and Guy Debord are mentioned critically. The conclusion of the author is that there is no reason to believe the problems of interpretation and the future of contemporary art are due to anything like specific visual turn of world culture nowadays. The visual leads to the rational, even to metaphysical if we are prepared to understand it.

When Stuart Hall died in 2014, many tributes and memorial activities were planned by organisations, institutions and publications that felt they owed him a debt. New Formations was no exception, and the editorial board spent some time reflecting on an appropriate tribute. Stuart himself, as many of us knew, had little interest in seeing his work codified or memorialised for its own sake. But there was one injunction that many of us were familiar with from that work, his example, and from frequent personal and political conversations with him. The importance of thinking about 'the conjuncture', of 'getting the analysis right', was one that Stuart frequently emphasised to his students and interlocutors. The importance of mapping the specificity of the present, of situating current developments historically, of looking out for political threats and opportunities, was always at the heart of Stuart's conception both of 'cultural studies' as a specific intellectual practice, and of the general vocation of critical and engaged scholarship in the contemporary world. This is double-issue is the first of two volumes of New Formations to be dedicated, in Stuart's honour, to the understanding of this conjuncture. This introductory essay/editorial considers the relationship between 'cultural studies' and 'conjunctural analysis' as specific types of intellectual practice, before proposing a specific analysis of our present 'conjuncture', in dialogue with the other contributors to this volume.
