Cohesive devices in a piece of writing serve to unify sentences within a text. Building upon Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) Cohesion in English, this study aimed to identify and classify cohesive devices and also to discover the effects of cohesion overuse and underuse found in synopsis writings written for Book Report 1 and Book Report 2 assignment. The data were collected from 40 synopsis writings produced by the 4th and 5th semester students of English Study Program of Universitas Gadjah Mada. The data analysis applied a qualitative method and the data collection used purposive sampling technique. The findings showed that reiteration was the most prominently used type and followed by reference, conjunction, and collocation with the frequency 2,193 (56.94%), 1,405 (36.48%), 64 (2.92%), and 252 (6.54%) times respectively. Other types with low occurrences were elliptical and substitutional cohesion that occurred 3 (0.078%) and 2 (0.051%) times respectively. In some cases, students tended to overuse and underuse cohesive devices. In terms of cohesion overuse, in some cases, the use of reiteration leading to lexical redundancy and monotonous sentences. And in cohesion underuse, the lack of using personal reference and temporal conjunction yielding ineffective and less cohesive sentences. Keywords: Cohesive Devices; Discourse Analysis; Synopsis Writings.

Fostering a sense of belonging and a personal connection is seen as fundamental by many educational researchers, regardless of the learning environment. Online learning certainly provides flexible learning opportunities but comes with notable issues. For online learners, nurturing a sense of belonging may present a way of improving their experiences and attainment, as well as reducing attrition rates. Research specifically exploring sense of belonging and online learning is limited. This article addresses that gap and reports on a small-scale exploratory study using qualitative data-collection and analysis methods to investigate the importance, or not, of sense of belonging for postgraduates’ online education by exploring the origins and nature of their lived experience of online learning and their sense of belonging therein. Our initial findings emphasise its importance for them as online learners and have identified three significant themes: interaction/engagement, the culture of the learning, and support. These early findings highlight the importance of these three themes in promoting a sense of belonging and in ensuring that there are opportunities for meaningful group and peer interactions; they will be of interest to all engaged in online education.

The purpose of this study was to determine the talent selection methods applied to athletes involved in different sports branches in Turkey. The research population consisted of 724 volunteer athletes who were active in sports clubs in thirty seven different cities of Turkey. Semi-structured interview form was used as data collection tool. It was determined that no talent test was applied to 512 (70.72%) of 724 athletes who participated in the study and 212 (29.28%) were put to talent test methods by their coaches. Of 212 athletes who were put to talent test, 41 (5.66%) were observed for their physical characteristics, 59 (8.14%) for their competitions, 75 (10.35%) for their basic motor skills (speed, strength, endurance, coordination, balance, flexibility and agility) and 37 (5.11%) for their technical capacities in competitions. As a result; it is estimated that the application of physical, mental, physiological, body composition and genetic tests all together while determining the talent selection in sports will be the most effective method to detect talented athletes.
