Avaliou-se a produção de mudas de Eucalyptus urophylla, E. camaldulensis e Corymbia citriodora em blocos prensados e em dois modelos de tubetes por meio da avaliação da sobrevivência e do crescimento inicial das mudas. A sobrevivência foi avaliada aos sessenta dias e o crescimento inicial em altura e diâmetro ao nível do solo ao décimo mês pós-plantio. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Mudas de E. urophylla e E. camaldulensis produzidas nos blocos e nos dois modelos de tubetes e mudas de C. citriodora produzidas nos dois modelos de tubetes obtiveram altas taxas de sobrevivência. Já as mudas de C. citriodora produzidas nos blocos apresentaram a menor média de sobrevivência no estudo. As médias de crescimento inicial das mudas de E. urophylla produzidas nos blocos e tubetes de 50 cm3 foram superiores às encontradas para mudas produzidas em tubetes de 35 cm3. Para E. camaldulensis e C. citriodora, as médias de crescimento inicial foram semelhantes nos três recipientes. Recomenda-se a produção de mudas de E. urophylla em tubetes de 50 cm3 ou em blocos prensados. As mudas de E. camaldulensis podem ser produzidas nos três recipientes, e C. citriodora nos tubetes de 50 e 35 cm3.Palavras-chave: Qualidade de mudas; desempenho pós-plantio. AbstractPerformance in the field of Eucalyptus urophylla, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Corymbia citriodora produced in different containers. We evaluated the production of Eucalyptus urophylla, E. camaldulensis and Corymbia citriodora in pressed blocks and two tubes models by the evaluation of survival and early growth of seedlings. We assessed survival at sixty days and initial growth in height and diameter at ground level to the tenth month after planting. We used a randomized block design with five replications. Seedlings of E. urophylla and E. camaldulensis produced in blocks, and in two tube models, and seedlings of C. citriodora produced in two tube models had high survival rates. On the other hand, seedlings of C. citriodora produced in blocks presented the lowest survival mean. The initial seedling growth mean of E. urophylla produced in blocks and tubes of 50 cm3 were higher than for seedlings grown in tubes of 35 cm3. In relation to E. camaldulensis and C. citriodora the average initial growth were similar in the three containers. Production of seedlings of E. urophylla is recommended in tubes of 50 cm3 or in compressed blocks, E. camaldulensis seedlings can be produced in three containers, and C. citriodora in tubes of 50 and 35 cm3.Keywords: Seedling quality; post-planting performance.

Com a premissa de que a utilização de hidrogel associado à calagem e adubação em plantios de eucalipto aumenta a retenção de água e o teor de nutrientes no solo, objetivou-se avaliar a sobrevivência e o desenvolvimento inicial de clones híbridos de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus camaldulensis, em função da utilização de hidrogel, calagem e adubação. Em um Argissolo Vermelho, foram dispostos os tratamentos: 1) controle, 2) hidrogel, 3) adubação convencional, 4) adubação + calagem, 5) adubação + hidrogel e 6) adubação + calagem + hidrogel. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados, com seis repetições e seis plantas por parcela. Avaliou-se a sobrevivência, a altura, o diâmetro do caule, o teor de macronutrientes na parte aérea e atributos químicos do solo. O tratamento adubação + hidrogel proporcionou maior altura e diâmetro aos 240 dias após o transplante. Contudo, a sobrevivência foi maior no tratamento com adubação convencional. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade do uso de hidrogel. Porém, mais estudos devem ser realizados para comprovação de seus efeitos e recomendação de dosagens adequadas.Hydrogel, liming and fertilizing in early development, survival and nutritional composition of eucalyptus hybrid plantsWith the premise that use of hydrogel associated with liming and fertilization in eucalyptus plantations increases water retention and nutrient content in the soil, this work aimed to evaluate the survival and early development of the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus camaldulensis when using hydrogel, liming and fertilization. In Ultisol, the treatments were: 1) control, 2) hydrogel, 3) conventional fertilization, 4) fertilizer + lime, 5) fertilizer + hydrogel and 6) fertilizer + lime + hydrogel. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, with six replications and six plants per plot. We evaluated height, diameter, survival, macronutrient content in shoot and soil chemical properties. The hydrogel + fertilization treatment provided bigger height and diameter at 240 days after transplant, however, the survival was higher in fertilization treatment. The results indicate the viability of the hydrogel use. Planting densities influence several aspects of forest formation, including management practices, timber yield, quality, and extraction, and consequently its production costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate Mimosa caesalpiinifolia and Gliricidia sepium growth as a function of planting density (400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 plants ha-1) and plant age. The species were evaluated every 90 days for plant height (PH), crown diameter (CD) and root collar diameter (RCD) (10 cm above the ground), with the first evaluation performed at 90 days and the last at 720 days. When plants were one year of age and beyond, evaluations were conducted also for stem diameter at breast height (DBH) (1.30 m above the ground). A randomized block design with split-plots and three replicates was adopted. Species were assigned to plots, planting densities were assigned to subplots, and evaluation ages were assigned to subsubplots. The four traits in both species had their values decreased as planting density increased, but continually increased as plant age increased. For PH and RCD there was an alternation between species superiority, with gliricidia being superior to sabiá at some ages, while the opposite occurred at other ages. As to CD the species only differed in the last measurement, gliricidia being superior. With regard to DBH, gliricidia was superior starting from the second measurement. There was an effect of the species × ages interaction for the four traits and also an effect of the densities × ages interaction for CD and DBH.

Foi implantado um experimento no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, em parcelas subdivididas no esquema 5 x 4, sendo as parcelas compostas por lâminas de irrigação diárias (6, 8, 10, 12 e 14 mm) e as subparcelas substratos: S1 - 100% Latossolo vermelho; S2 - 50% Latossolo vermelho e 50% Areia; S3 - 45% Latossolo vermelho, 45% Areia e 10% Esterco Bovino Curtido e S4 - Substrato comercial Basaplant®. As características avaliadas foram altura de planta, diâmetro de caule, número de folíolos, comprimento de raiz, massa seca de raiz, massa seca de parte aérea, massa seca de muda, relação das massas secas de raiz e parte aérea e índice de qualidade de Dickson. Aos 200 dias após a semeadura (DAS) o substrato S1 proporcionou maior crescimento e qualidade às plantas de baruzeiro, dado pelo Índice de Qualidade de Dickson (IQD) obtido de 1,05, assim como a lâmina de 14 mm dia-1, a qual obteve IQD igual 0,98, diferindo estatisticamente das demais lâminas avaliadas. Palavras-chave: gotejamento, características produtivas, Índice de Qualidade de Dickson.  OLIVEIRA, H. The experiment was installed in a randomized block design, with four replications, in split-plot, in the scheme 4 x 5, with plots composed of five daily irrigations levels and four subplots substrates: S1 - 100% OXISOL RED; S2 - 50% OXISOL RED and 50% sand; S3 - 45% OXISOL RED, 45% sand, and 10% of tanned manure and S4 - Commercial Substrate Basaplant. The five daily watering (6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 mm) make up the subplot. The characteristics assessed were plant height, stem diameter, number of leaflets, root system length, dry matter mass of roots, dry matter mass of aerial portion, dry matter  mass of seedling, ratio between roots dry matter mass and aerial portion and seedling quality. At 200 DAS substrate S1 provided greater growth and quality to baruzeiro plants, given by the Dickson Quality Index (DQI) obtained of 1.05, as well as the irrigation depth of 14 mm day-1, once it obtained DQI equal to 0.98, statistically differing from the other irrigation depths assessed. Keywords: drip irrigation, productive characteristics, Dickson Quality Index.

Sugarcane (Sacharum officinarum L.) is a sugar-producing plant and is a food commodity that is needed by the people of Indonesia. National sugar demands are increasing every year. The low productivity of sugarcane is due to the competition of weeds which can reduce sugarcane production. To achieve high productivity, it is necessary to pay attention to the varieties used because they require certain conditions in their management. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of varieties and types of weeds on the initial growth of sugarcane. The study was conducted from September 2018 to December 2018. The study used factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors and four replications. The first factor consists of 4 sugarcane varieties, namely: Bululawang (V1), Red HW (V2), VMC (V3) and PS 862 (V4). The second factor type of weed consists of 2 types, namely Cyperus rotundus (N1) and Amaranthus spinosus L. (N2). The results showed that (1) There was interaction between the varieties (V) and the weed types (N) in stem diameter parameters and number of tillers, the treatment V4N1 gives the best response to stem diameter 1,31 cm and 4,25 number of tillers; (2) The treatment of varieties (V) gives affects to stem diameter and number of leaves, the treatment V4 gives the best response 5,38 to number of leaves; (3) Types of thorn spinach weeds can reduce the initial growth of sugarcane. ABSTRACT: The use of herbicide underdoses allows minimizing the competition of grasses on annual crops, enabling simultaneous cultivation. In this context, the objective of this study was to investigate glyphosate underdoses on the suppression of the initial growth of three Panicum maximum cultivars aiming at the integrated cultivation, in addition to the effects of forage species on the incidence and development of weeds. Three field experiments were conducted. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications and eight treatments consisting of increasing glyphosate doses (0, 54, 108, 270, 378, 540, 756, and 1,080 g a.e. ha−1). An atrazine dose of 1,200 g a.i. ha−1 was added to each treatment. Plant phytotoxicity assessments were performed at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after application. At 80 and 125 days after sowing, the assessments of total dry matter production, leaf dry matter, stem dry matter, and leaf to stem ratio were carried out, in addition to density and dry matter production of weed community. Glyphosate underdoses below 215, 65, and 90 g a.e. ha-1 have a potential to be investigated aiming at the management of P. maximum cv. Atlas, P. maximum cv. Mombasa, and P. maximum cv. Tanzania under intercropping. The three forage species are effective in suppressing weeds.

The melon crop is normally developed in semiarid regions, where water resources are limited. This scarcity of water is a strong stressor on the crops, and requires the supplementation of existing water supplies with poor quality water, especially saline water. This can impede the growth and production of plants; however, the use of tolerant genotypes may minimize this problem. Thus, a greenhouse experiment was developed at the Federal University of Campina Grande - UFCG, Pombal Campus, Paraiba State, Brazil, in order to study the emergence, initial growth, and tolerance of melon cultivars irrigated with waters of different salt content. We studied three melon cultivars (Gaúcho Redondo, Gaúcho Casca de Carvalho and Halles Best Jumbo) irrigated with five levels of saline water (0.6; 1.2; 1.8; 2.4; and 3.0 dS m-1), arranged in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme, with the treatments distributed in a randomized block design with four replications. The plants seeds were monitored for 30 days after sowing, and at 30 days the growth and salinity tolerance index was evaluated. Cultivar Halles Best Jumbo was the most tolerant to saline water during initial stage of growth, while the Gaucho Redondo was more sensitive to salinity. It was found that saline waters up to 1.8 dS m-1 were suitable for irrigation of melon plants round Gaucho and waters up to 2.4 dS m-1 could be used for irrigation of Gaucho Casca de Carvalho and Halles Best Jumbo crops during the initial growth phase.

<p>The use of resistant rootstocks could be a promising method to control nematode<bold>Meloidogyne enterolobii</bold>in commercial plantations of guava. The present study aimed to evaluate the success of grafting guava as a scion on accessions of cattley guava as rootstocks resistant to<bold> M. enterolobii.</bold>The treatments consisted of the rootstocks cattley guava plants (three accessions of<bold> Psidium cattleyanum</bold>) and common guava (control). In the apical wedge grafting method, scion of Paluma cultivated variety was used. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four treatments and five replicates, and eight plants per plot. The saplings produced as described before were planted in the field where the initial growth of the different combinations were evaluated. Graft success was observed for the control (common guava) and for accessions 115 and 117 of cattley guava plants, with success rates of 63, 32 and 29%, respectively. In the field, the cattley guava used as rootstocks hampered Paluma canopy development and caused death of plants. Incompatibility of <bold>P. cattleyanum</bold>as rootstocks for<bold> P. guajava</bold>Paluma was confirmed one year after cultivation in field.</p>

The size distributions of populations of four semi-arid perennial trees were investigated within Kinchega National Park in western NSW. For Acacia ligulata, A, loderi and Alectryon oleifolius, it appears that regeneration has been eliminated or at best severely limited at most sites. Some regeneration has occurred through recruitment of vegetative suckers in Casuarina pauper. Currently these vegetative recruits have high survival rates under both rabbit and kangaroo grazing, although such grazing frequently reduces the height of vegetative suckers back to ground level. Survival of seedlings of Acacia ligulata was very limited, with highest survival when mammals were excluded. There was no survival of seedlings of Casuarina pauper in the presence of rabbits and survival was poor when rabbits were excluded. Many seedlings of both species die through desiccation. The survival data from seedlings and vegetative suckers reinforce the patterns observed in the size distribution of populations. Within Kinchega National Park, control of rabbits is essential to initiate regeneration. A reduction in the total grazing pressure (especially rabbits, sheep, cattle and goats) is necessary in critical dry periods on semi-arid and arid grazing land if regeneration of perennials is to be encouraged.

This study, a component of the Fallingsnow Ecosystem Project, was designed to investigate the effects of conifer release alternatives on the quality of regenerating trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.). A randomized block design was used to compare untreated aspen with aspen growing in areas treated with two broadcast cutting treatments (brushsaw and Silvana Selective) and two broadcast herbicide treatments (glyphosate and triclopyr). The glyphosate treatment virtually eliminated aspen, whereas triclopyr tended to top-kill aspen, resulting in lateral dominance. Both fall cutting treatments generated prolific aspen root suckering and stump sprouting. Stain was common in aspen across the study site in damaged, untreated, and post-treatment stems, indicating that stain develops rapidly in young aspen suckers. Stems damaged by the treatments had higher incidences of decay (33% of cut stems and 10% of herbicide-damaged stems) than untreated aspen (8% of stems); however, decay volume was low for all treatments (1–4% of total stem volume affected). The location of decay (e.g., near ground level in cut stems) and presence of stem crooks in herbicide-treated aspen are important effects of the treatments on aspen quality. Armillaria root disease, which was found throughout the study site, was more prevalent in roots of treatment-damaged and untreated aspen than in suckers that originated post-treatment. These differences can be attributed to proximity to parent stumps, prevalence of root wounds, and older age of damaged and untreated stems. ABSTRACT High prices and the scarcity of hardwoods require the use of alternative wood sources, such as the Guapuruvu (Schizolobium parahybae), an arboreal species native to the Atlantic Forest, which has fast growth and high market potential. However, there is no information on its cultivation in the Brazilian Cerrado. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the contribution of mineral fertilization and liming in a Cerrado soil on the initial growth of Schizolobium parahybae. The experiment was set in a randomized block design, with 4 treatments (Cerrado soil; soil + liming; soil + fertilizer; and soil + fertilizer + liming) and 15 replicates. The following variables were analyzed: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, total, shoot, leaf, root and stem dry matter, and root/shoot ratio. The obtained data were subjected to the analysis of variance, Tukey test and regression analysis. During the initial growth, Schizolobium parahybae can be cultivated in a Brazilian Cerrado soil only under mineral fertilization, with no need for soil liming.
