This study examined the relationship between technology factors students use beyond school and their standardized math assessment scores. Student frequency of seeking math help online, playing digital games involving math, and programming computers outside of school were studied. An analysis of data taken from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) dataset was done to compare student responses from survey data to mathematics achievement scores of 8th-grade students. This secondary data analysis was completed using multiple t-tests to compare means and determine significance. Results found in this study showed that beyond school, frequent use (daily or almost) of websites for math homework help, playing digital games involving, and programming computers had negative effects on scores. Once/twice a year or month scored better than never for website use and digital games, while never programming scored higher than all other frequencies. Students may benefit from instructional guidance as to which websites are most beneficial for homework help with math. An effort to help students recognize math use in digital games may increase their awareness and intentional use outside of school. Early classroom instruction on computer programming may help provide a better understanding of its relationship with mathematics.

Abstract The Araruama Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro) is known for its scenic beauty and natural resources, factors that have led to the economic expansion of the region. In recent decades, tourism and property speculation have been key to the urban development of the municipalities surrounding this Lagoon. Using secondary data and a theoretical framework based on Political Ecology and Critical Environmental Education, this article seeks to analyze the correlations between the development processes of the towns surrounding the Lagoon and the impact of these processes on the environmental quality of its ecosystem. In recent years, the evolution of parameters studied revealed that the imbalance in terms of the sustainable development of the region has damaged the health of this body of water. Large quantities of fresh water, as well as domestic and industrial effluents discharged without appropriate treatment in the Lagoon, have overloaded the ecological system, with negative effects for the entire economy in the surrounding area.

The United States has experienced a decline in the number of well-paid manufacturing jobs requiring no more than a high school diploma, as well as of middle-income knowledge economy jobs. Globalization is, indeed, as many suggest, partly responsible for this problem. Other factors have, however, played an equally, if not more, significant role. Technological advancements, the decline of labor’s bargaining power, and the sharply increased financialization of the economy are among the factors which have contributed to the loss of manufacturing and service sector jobs, the creation of new types of tasks for which there are not enough qualified applicants, and a widening of income inequality. With the help of the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) system, we discuss each of these four factors taken individually and collectively (i.e. the Pressure), which result in the outcomes or States. The Responses discuss actions taken to address the negative effects of the P-S. We also propose responses which might be considered, and contend that training/retraining programs need to be redesigned, corporations need to play a more active role in dealing with societal disruptions, and that governments have a crucial role to play in ensuring economic and social stability. It needs to be emphasized that, particularly in regard to technology and the mutually reinforcing relationship between technology and globalization, which has transformed the nature of work, future impacts on employment and inequality) may well be even more powerful than in in the past.

The tourism sector is the single largest contributor to the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Malaysia. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are divided into three levels: micro, small and medium-sized - enterprises, in a programme initiated by the government to reduce poverty and cut the income gap between rural and urban residents. The involvement of SMEs in the tourism industry has contributed to the development of a competitive advantage for the tourism industry in Malaysia. SMEs are an important component of the Malaysian economy, accounting for more than a third of the total GDP and providing employment to more than seven million people. However, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a worldwide pandemic, it has radically changed the direction of the tourism sector in Malaysia, especially among the micro and small scale enterprises (SMEs). In an effort to slow the spread of the virus, numerous countries introduced and mandated the use of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including hand washing and sanitisation, social distancing and social isolation. Furthermore, the government has introduced several policies, improved public health systems and closed borders. These developments have restricted and even banned international travel and domestic travel, resulting in severe negative effects on the tourism sector. This unforeseen shock, to the tourism and other sectors, has dragged on for more than 12 months. It has severely curtailed the growth of micro and small scale enterprises (SMEs), leaving many such enterprises on the brink of closure. This study examines the literature and critically reviews the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted SMEs. The methodology of this study uses the method of highlighting literature material systematically. A conceptual research method using secondary data was used in this study.

Coconut is one of the important estate crops in Southeast Minahasa district. However, the development of coconut farming process in the district has problem on the insuffiency of labor. The purpose of this study was to: a) know the labor wage system in coconut processing to copra, and b) impact of lack of labour in coconut processing to copra on the income of the farmers and labour. The research was carried out as a case study in coconut production center in Liwutung I village, Pasan Subdistrict, Southeast Minahasa district from August to October 2013. Twenty farmers involved in coconut processing were interviewed to collect primary data. Secondary data were collected from local goverments. Primary data includes use of equipments and materials during copra processing time, purchase of staple food for consumption and supporting the work during harvest season. The collected data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the labour wage system in coconut processing to copra were either managed by the owner or by the workers with proportion based on agreement made by the two parties. Labor shortages had led to the decrease of farmer’s income from Rp. 1,539,682 to Rp. 1,053,435 (31.58 %) and the increase of labour income from Rp. 230,955 (negative) to Rp. 657,687 (210,53%). Labor shortages have negative effects on farmers' income but positive impact on the labour.

Although a large number of pesticides of different compositions are regularly used in agriculture, the impact of pesticides on the physiology of field crops is not well understood. Pesticides can produce negative effects on crop physiology―especially on photosynthesis―leading to a potential decrease in both the growth and the yield of crops. To investigate these potential effects in greenhouse sweet peppers, the effect of 20 insecticides and 2 fungicides (each sprayed with a wetting agent) on the photosynthesis of sweet pepper leaves was analyzed. Among these pesticides, nine caused significant reductions in photosynthetic activity. The effects were observed in distinctive ways—either as a transitory drop of the photosynthetic-rate values, which was observed at two hours after the treatment and was found to have recovered after 24 h, or as a sustained reduction of these values, which remained substantial over a number of days. The results of this study suggest that the production of a crop may substantially benefit when the frequent use of pesticides can be substituted with alternative pest control methods (e.g., biological control). Our results advocate further investigation of the potential impact of pesticides, either alone or in combination, on the photosynthesis of crop plants.
