The Rules for Seed Analysis reports the use of a paper envelope to allow use of the germination test with small seeds but does not provide any method or use recommendation. As Mombasa grass has high quality and commercial importance, the objective of this study was to evaluate the viability of the envelope method in the germination test of Mombasa grass seeds, with the aim of achieving greater result accuracy and improvement of seed quality analysis processes in laboratories. The germination of eight lots of Mombasa grass seeds was evaluated with two sowing methods (on paper and in paper envelope). The moisture content and the first germination count were also determined. The experiment was conducted with a completely randomized design. The data were analyzed in a 2 x 8 factor scheme (sowing methods x lots), with four repetitions. The data were subjected to analysis of variance using the F test and when significant, treatment means were compared using the Tukey’s test at 5% probability. Results showed that the envelope method is efficient for the germination test of Mombasa grass seeds and can be easily used by seed analysis laboratories, as it present results equivalent or superior to those obtained using the traditional method on paper, while occupying only 2/5 of the germination chamber space used in the conventional method.

ABSTRACT The rules for seed analysis do not have recommendations for conducting the germination test of Eucalyptus phaeotricha seeds. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the best substrate, temperature, conduction time, and substrate moistening level for the germination test of E. phaeotricha seeds. First count of germination, germination, germination speed index and mean time of germination were evaluated. The first experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme (6 x 2), corresponding to six temperature regimes (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 °C and 20-30 °C) and two substrates (paper and sand) with four replicates, and the means were compared by Tukey test at 0.05 probability level. In the second experiment, the germination test was installed with the most favorable substrate and temperature identified in the previous step, evaluating substrate moistening levels equivalent to 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 times the dry weight of the substrate; due to the quantitative nature of the treatments, the data were subjected to regression analysis and curve fitting. The germination test of E. phaeotricha seeds should be conducted at 30 °C on paper, moistened with a water volume of 2.2 times the dry weight of the paper, with initial and final counts at 6 and 14 days after sowing, respectively.

The objective of this study was to evaluate dormancy and physiological quality of seeds of rice cultivars during storage in different environments. After harvesting, the seeds of three rice cultivars (Seleta, Curinga and Relâmpago) were dried in the sun, to reach moisture content at around 13%. Then, they were packed in paper and stored in four environments: 5 ± 2 ºC / 70 ± 5% RH, 12 ± 2 ºC / 70 ± 5% RH, 18 ± 2 ºC / 65 ± 5% RH and in uncontrolled condition of temperature and relative humidity (natural). Physiological quality was evaluated at the beginning and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of storage by germination test, electrical conductivity, accelerated aging and sand emergence. The experiment was conducted in split plots in a completely randomized design with three replications. Environmental factor was applied in the plots, cultivars in the subplots and storage period in subplots. Cultivar Seleta showed higher dormancy, which was surpassed during storage regardless of environment conservation. In general, seeds stored in natural environment showed lower physiological quality. Only the seeds of cultivar Seleta, regardless of the environment, maintained germination above the minimum required for commercialization until six months of storage.

Jatropha seeds were classified according to tolerance to desiccation and storage, as a way to subsidize future propagation programs, as jatropha seed shows to be a promising oilseed for biodiesel production. The objective of this work was to study the physiological classification regarding the tolerance of physic nut seeds to desiccation and storage at low temperatures and to verify if their behavior was closer to that of seeds classified as orthodox, recalcitrant or intermediate. The seeds were harvested in the morning and sent to the Laboratory, being processed and submitted to drying, storage and emergency assessment. For seed quality analysis, the germination test and the emergence speed index were used, using a completely randomized design, with four treatments (no drying, 12% humidity, 5% humidity and 12% humidity a -20ºC for 90 days) and five repetitions. After physiological classification, it was found that seeds of physic nut are orthodox, thus can be stored at low temperature (-20ºC) and with low water content (<5%), without compromising their viability.

Fermentation process using known microbial species can be exploited for the processing of white pepper. It is expected to generate quality of white pepper in a short period soaking time. This research aimed to study characteristics of white pepper through a fermentation process by addition of combination isolates of Acetobacter sp., B. subtilis, and B. cereus. After threshing, 2 kg of fresh pepper berries was soaked in water mixed with starter culture. The experiment used a completely randomized design, two replications. The treatment consisted of: A) starter culture ratio of Acetobacter sp.: B. subtillis: B. cereus (A1 = 0:0:0; A2 = 1:1:1; A3 = 2:1:1; A4 = 1:2:1; and A5 = 1:1:2) and soaking time (B1 = 5 and B2 = 7 days). Fermented pepper was decorticated, washed, and dried. The best treatment was fermented for 7 days with the combination isolates of Acetobacter sp., B. subtilis, and B. cereus with ratio 2:1:1. This condition produced white pepper in fulfilling in requirement of SNI standards with piperine and essential oil contents and TPC of 5.95%, 2.95% and 1.1 x 102 CFU/g, respectively. This process is expected to generate high quality of white pepper in a short soaking time.

ABSTRACT The quality of seedling is critical to obtain vigorous plants in the field. The present study aimed to assess biomasses and biometric relations of soursop seedlings. We used different substrates in protected environments. The experiment was performed at the Universidade Estadual do Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) (State University of Mato Grosso do Sul). Five farming environments were developed in greenhouses: one covered with low-density polyethylene film (LDPE), another with with polyethylene and heat-reflective cloth under film under 50% shading in aluminized color, monofilament cloth under 50% shading in black, thermo-reflective cloth under 50% shading in aluminized color, and an environment covered with bacuri coconut straw. Substrates were made of manure, humus, cassava branches and vermiculite at different proportions. Each of them varying from 25%, 33.3%, 50% and 75% in mixture combination. Each environment was considered an experiment. A completely randomized design was adopted and later a joint analysis of them. Agricultural greenhouse covered with LDPE and thermo-reflective cloths under 50% of shading, proportionated seedlings with greater biomass. Substrates containing manure are the most suitable for soursop seedlings. High percentages of earthworm humus produce low quality soursop seedlings. Soursop seedlings had a Dickson’s quality index around 0.335. The greenhouse covered only with LDPE film did not produce high quality seedlings.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of temperature, substrate, and luminosity on chia seeds in order to determine adequate conditions for a germination test. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design, in a 4 × 5 × 2 factorial scheme (four substrates × five temperatures × two luminosity conditions), with four replications. The following variables were analyzed: first germination count, germination, germination speed index, and mean germination time. Germination was best at 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C for the on-paper, paper roll, and sand substrates. However, in the presence of luminosity and at 25 °C, the on-paper substrate had the highest mean. For all substrates, the lowest germination was achieved at 35 °C, proving that high temperatures reduce chia seed germination. Germination speed index was highest at 25 and 30 °C for on-paper, paper roll, and sand substrates, in both the presence and absence of luminosity. Chia seeds are considered to be neutral photoblasts. Germination tests should be performed with the on-paper substrate, at 25 °C, and with a duration of seven days. The first count should be carried out four days after establishment of the test.

The production of high-quality seedlings is a critical factor for successful implementation of a determined crop in the field. In order to evaluate the production of coffee seedlings, experiments were conducted with different substrates and in different protected environments. Treatments consisted of evaluation of the following substrates: 50% cattle manure + 50% commercial substrate, 50% cattle manure + 50% vermiculite, 50% commercial substrate + 50% vermiculite, 1/3 cattle manure + 1/3 commercial substrate + 1/3 vermiculite, 50% cattle manure + 50% sand, 1/3 sand + 1/3 cattle manure + 1/3 commercial substrate and 50% commercial substrate + 50% sand. These substrates were tested in different protected environments: agricultural greenhouse, mesh screen with 50% shading, aluminized screen with 50% shading, black screen with 30% shading, black screen with 70% shading, nursery with a buriti straw roof and full sunlight. In each environment, the experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with five replicates of four plants each followed by joint analysis. The substrates containing 50% cattle manure associated with vermiculite or the commercial substrate may be indicated for production of coffee seedlings. Screened environments with 30, 50 and 70% shading resulted in the highest quality seedlings.

<p>Kopi Robusta Indonesia memiliki agroklimat dan elevasi tempat yang variatif serta lebih luas sehingga berpotensi sebagai penghasil kopi Robusta yang bermutu tinggi dengan citarasa dan aroma khas. Penelitian telah dilaksanakan di perkebunan rakyat Provinsi Lampung dari bulan Januari hingga Desember 2013. Tujuan penelitian adalah menganalisis pengaruh elevasi dan pengolahan terhadap kandungan kimia serta citarasa kopi Robusta di perkebunan kopi Robusta milik rakyat di Provinsi Lampung. Penelitian menggunakan metode survey dan analisis datanya mengikuti Rancangan Acak Lengkap dengan dua faktor dan tiga ulangan. Faktor pertama adalah empat ketinggian tempat, yaitu (1) 200; (2) 400; (3) 600 dan (4) 800 m dpl, sedangkan faktor kedua pengolahan buah kopi, yaitu (1) basah dan (2) kering. Parameter yang diamati meliputi pengujian kadar kafein, protein, lemak, dan abu serta uji organoleptik (cupping test). Hasil penelitian mendapatkan bahwa makin tinggi elevasi tempat tumbuh kopi Robusta di daerah Lampung maka kadar kafein dan lemak cenderung semakin meningkat. Selanjutnya, proses pengolahan kopi secara basah menghasilkan mutu citarasa kopi Robusta Lampung lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan pengolahan secara kering.</p><p>Kata Kunci: Kopi Robusta, elevasi, pengolahan, kandungan kimia, citarasa</p><p>Robusta coffee was grown in Indonesia at diverse agro-climatic conditions and altitudes, so it potentially to develop of high quality Robusta coffee with a distinctive flavor and aroma. Research was conducted on smallholder plantations in Lampung Province from January to December 2013. The objective of this study was to analyze the quality and flavor of Robusta coffee developed at different elevation in Lampung Province, in order to identify the most appropriate elevation for Robusta coffee to have the best quality and flavor. Research was use completely randomized design with three replications and two factors. The first factor is altitude: (1) 200; (2) 400; (3) and 600 (4) 800 m above sea level, while the second factor is the processing technique: (1) wet; and (2) dry processing. Variables tested were levels of caffeine, protein, fat and ash as well as cup quality. The results showed that the higher of elevation the higher of caffein and fat contents. Moreover, wet processing of Lampung Robusta Coffee gave higher cup quality compared to dry processing.</p>

Abstract Currently, African catfish is developing quite rapidly, because African catfish is one of the important commodities in the fishery. Efforts to increase the production of African catfish is to improve the quality of feed. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the use of shark waste mill on the growth rate, feed efficiency and survival rate of African catfish fishing. The research method was experimental with completely randomized design (CRD). The research consisted of five treatments and four replications. The treatments used were: (A) shark waste mill at 0% and fish mill by 50%, (B) 5% shark waste mill and 45% fish mill, (C) 10% waste shark mill and 40% fish mill, (D) 15% waste shark mill and fish mill and 35% (E) 20% shark waste mill and 30% fish mill. The main parameters measured were growth, feed efficiency and survival rate. Supporting parameters measured were water quality. Analysis of the data using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and to determine the differences between treatments tested by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the giving of shark waste mil on ration had highly different effects on growth rate and feed eficiency of african catfish. The feeding of waste shark mill in ration had no significantly different effect on Survival Rate (SR). The best dose of shark waste mill is treatment C (10%) with growth rate (1,26%/day), feed eficiency (38,64%) and survival rate (55%).

O Centro-Oeste brasileiro representa a região brasileira com maior área e produção de sementes de Megathyrsus maximus, uma gramínea muito utilizada para a formação de pastagens em regiões tropicais do Brasil e outros países da América. Objetivou-se no presente estudo diagnosticar a qualidade física e fisiológica de sementes de três cultivares da espécie M. maximus (Mombaça, BRS Tamani e BRS Zuri) comercializadas por diferentes empresas de Campo Grande (MS). Os experimentos foram conduzidos utilizando-se sementes da safra 2017-2018 em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 6, avaliando-se três cultivares e seis procedências. As variáveis analisadas foram: pureza física, peso de mil sementes, primeira contagem do teste de germinação, germinação, valor cultural e teste de tetrazólio. Os resultados encontrados demonstram que, com exceção de um lote da cultivar Mombaça, os demais lotes das três cultivares da espécie Megathyrsus maximus (Mombaça, BRS Tamani e BRS Zuri), de todas as procedências avaliadas, apresentaram qualidade física e fisiológica compatível com a comercialização em função da legislação vigente. No entanto, é possível encontrar lotes com qualidade distinta no mercado de Campo Grande. Assim, a escolha adequada da procedência (empresa) vai garantir a expressão máxima do potencial genético, subsidiada por processos adequados de produção e pós-colheita. Valor Cultural.   Abstract Brazilian's Midwest represents the region with the largest area and production of Megathyrsus maximus seeds, a grass widely used for the pastures formation in tropical regions of Brazil and other countries in America.The objective of this study was to diagnose the physical and physiological quality of seeds of three cultivars of the species Megathyrsus maximus (Mombaça, BRS Tamani and BRS Zuri) commercialized by different companies of Campo Grande (MS). The experiments were conducted using seeds of the 2017-2018 harvest, in a completely randomized design, using a factorial scheme 3 x 6, with three species and six sources, totaling 18 treatments. The variables analyzed were: physical purity, weight of one thousand seeds, first count of germination test, germination, cultural value and tetrazolium. The results showed that with the exception of one lot of cultivar Mombaça, the other lots of the three cultivars of species Megathyrsus maximus (Mombasa, BRS Tamani and BRS Zuri), of all provenances, have compatible physical and physiological quality with marketing in accordance with current legislation. However, it is possible to find lots of different quality in the Campo Grande market. Thus, the appropriate choice of source (company) will guarantee the maximum expression of genetic potential, subsidized by adequate production and post-harvest processes.
