The present study aims to investigate EFL learners’ perceptions of multimodal feedback on writing and their use of screencast feedback in revision. Six English majors participated in the case study for 8 weeks. In analyzing diaries and the follow-up interview, it was found that participants reported a positive attitude towards the use of screencast feedback on writing. The audio-visual feedback was viewed as beneficial in motivating and engaging students in writing. The multimodal comments were effective to meet students’ diverse needs and build up the relationship between teacher and students. It was also reported by the participants the potential value of using screencast feedback to encourage students to take active actions in revision.

There is ample evidence to show that people with intellectual disabilities (ID) face an increased risk of being socially excluded. The longer life expectancy of persons with ID carries new challenges. In this paper, we report on a follow-up case study of three Finnish women with ID. The women were interviewed twice (in 1995 and in 2013) and relationship maps were drawn pursuant to the interviews. In all three cases, the density of the relationship maps had decreased. In two cases, intimate relationships had remained or become even closer. In one case, intimate relationships were fewer. External services were inadequate in supporting the women to maintain their social relationships. Resources in the immediate families were decisive in determining their life course which was burdened by several extra obstacles. Some of these obstacles could possibly have been prevented if there had been a more permanent support system. The advantages and disadvantages of service and support paradigms are discussed.

Abstract Suburban areas are subjected to particularly strong investment pressure, thus facing the challenge arising from the need to impose new spatial order. Satisfying the residents’ expectations by implementing necessary technical and social infrastructure becomes a priority. Therefore, public investments play an important role in suburban areas. The article discusses the role of public purpose goals and their achievement using a case study which encompassed the outskirts of Olsztyn and consisted of detailed analyses of two gminas (communes) adjacent to the city. The research covered the time period from 2006 to 2010. The relationship between the development of housing functions in a suburban area and the location of public purpose investments such as technical and social infrastructure has been documented. The execution of public purpose projects is a follow-up of the development strategies prepared for the gminas where public investments are shown as a stimulant of suburban development. It has been demonstrated that decisions permitting such investments to be carried out are issued in response to the needs of the local community and investors moving to suburban territories.

The purpose of this case study was to explore how teachers and students use iPads in class, the obstacles and barriers to teacher and student iPad use, and the relationship between types and frequency of use, in one high school in Southern Oregon. The study consisted of classroom observations and follow-up interviews with nine teachers with iPad carts over a three week period. Qualitative data was emphasized, with some quantitative data to support it. Overall, iPad use was low, even though access to iPads was high. When iPads were used, teachers used iPads mostly for communication and delivering instruction, and students used iPads mostly for reading, writing, and research. Observational data and interview data results on the types of use were consistent, indicating that teachers are well aware of how they use iPads in their classrooms.

Purpose of the study: This research aimed at investigating the extent of anxiety experienced by TOEFL test-takers in the Indonesian context as EFL learners. Methodology: The participants of this study were 50 university students from various non-English majors. They were selected by using purposive sampling. The research design was descriptive quantitative method, in which a 10-question questionnaire was used as the research instrument. The questions were scored by using a five-point scale and the data were analyzed by using the three steps of data analysis. Main Findings: The result of the data analysis showed that more than 80%percent of students experienced moderate anxiety before and during the TOEFL test-taking while the rest (20%) suffered from mild anxiety. Applications of this study: The research findings can benefit TOEFL Preparation classes’ instructors, by which they can take the anxiety variable into account when teaching TOEFL so that the level of students’ anxiety before and during the test can be minimized. Novelty/Originality of this study: Relatively little research examined EFL students’ anxiety in the TOEFL test. Others are much devoted to the anxiety aspects within English classroom contexts such as in anxiety in reading, writing, and speaking skills, the relationship between anxiety and motivation, as well as intelligence dominance among non-low proficiency students. Therefore, this research is devoted to a high-stake test (TOEFL test), which has not been studied previously by any researchers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between HRM and innovation in SMEs through gift/counter-gift exchanges. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative case study of a SME using a diversity of data collection methods with a one year follow up to provide some longitudinal data. Findings The results indicate that the logic of giving has three stages: freeing up gifts, mobilizing gifts and rethinking gifts. The results also indicate that employees need to be central to the innovation from the beginnings of such projects. Research limitations/implications The authors note that their linear process in this study may give the impression that the process of innovation is linear and sequential rather than dynamic. They also point out that some cognitive bias could arise from the research being based on retrospection. Practical implications The authors make six recommendations: 10;1. The leader should share their strategic vision from the outset to gain as much support as possible 10;2. Seek to build a culture conducive to gifting 10;3. Encourage employee engagement using a bottom-up approach 10;4. Detect and enlist key players 10;5. Be aware of frustrations among employees 10;6. Create virtuous collaboration. Originality/value Many questions remain from previous literature regarding the relationship between HRM and innovation in SMEs. This study has originality and value in using the gift/counter-gift theory to explore that relationship.

Background Encephaloceles presents as a protrusion of the cranial contents through a defect in the cranium. The most common sites of occurrence are the occipital and frontonasal regions. The surgical outcome is reported to be satisfactory; however, the incidence of hydrocephalus in patients with encephaloceles is variable in the literature. This study investigated the relationship between the size of the encephaloceles and the occurrence of hydrocephalus. Patient and Methods Data of all neonates with encephaloceles who presented to our institution from September 2012 to September 2014 were collected. Surgery was performed during the first 2 weeks of age. Encephaloceles with a maximal diameter > 10 cm were included in the study, and the clinical picture, surgical technique, pre- and postoperative imaging, and follow-up were analyzed. Results Nineteen cases were included in this study. The mean follow-up period was 7 months. Sixteen cases were occipital; three were frontal. In all patients the maximum diameter was > 10 cm. However, in four patients it was > 18 cm. Postoperative ventriculomegaly occurred in seven cases. Of these, four patients needed a permanent ventriculoperitoneal shunt implantation (21%). Wound dehiscence occurred in two patients who required secondary sutures with a favorable outcome. One patient died 2 weeks after the surgery due to a poor general condition and wound infection. Conclusion Early surgical excision provides effective treatment of huge encephaloceles. Overall, 21% of cases require cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion afterward depending on associated anomalies. Despite their size, giant encephaloceles can have an excellent prognosis with no need for further treatment or CSF diversion.

This article reports the findings of a case study on the implementation of Blackboard Learning Management System in the Department of English, Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia. The study aims at exploring the effects of using Blackboard, an interactive computer-mediated learning environment, on English majors’ writing proficiency and examining their attitudes towards the use of Blackboard. Three indicators were used, namely, accuracy, fluency and complexity to estimate students’ writing proficiency. The Profile of Larsen-Freeman (2006) was employed to assess students’ writing proficiency. Students’ attitudes were measured through a questionnaire that is divided into three domains: (a) demographic and personal information, (b) implementation strategies of Blackboard and (c) students’ attitudes towards Blackboard. Results of the study revealed a significant positive effect of using Blackboard on developing English majors’ writing proficiency. In addition, students showed a positive attitude towards the use of Blackboard.

The present research studies the effects of using Facebook as a medium to minimize students’ spelling mistakes of high school EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students. The study used four types of data collection which are: students’ questionnaire, classroom observation, Spelling Mistakes Group on Facebook, and Diagnostic test which was administered to students in order to check their spelling mistakes. The finding of the questionnaire found that students had positive attitude toward using Facebook as a means of developing their writing skills in general. As an educational tool assisting, Facebook will provide students with an attractive medium to help them engage in discussions with their teachers and classmates to share their knowledge.

The purpose of this mixed methods sequential explanatory study was to explain the relationship between literacy experiences over time and the literacy identities of the doctoral students in a teacher education and higher education program. The quantitative phase, surveying 36 participants, revealed a positive correlation between participant’s present and past literacy experiences, suggesting that past literacy experiences impacted their present perception of themselves as successful doctoral students. In the qualitative follow up multiple case study analysis, four major themes emerged from the interviews and participants’ visual representations: (1) past literacy experiences; (2) present literacy experiences; (3) support systems; and (4) social experiences. The findings suggest that early feelings of success in literacy contribute to strong literacy identities in higher education programs. Implications for the faculty of higher education will be discussed.
