This paper is proposed to clarify the effectiveness of semantic expressions used to designate climate change in France context, i.e. “réchauffement climatique” (“global warming”); “changement climatique” (“climate change”); and “derangement climatique” (“climate imbalance”). An experimental study (sample size N = 126) based on ‘linguistic semantics’ approach is conducted in order to assess the effect of these expressions on concerns, perceptions risk and sensitivity regarding Climate Change (CC). Our results show that the expression “réchauffement climatique” (“global warming”) is the most appropriate from a statistical standpoint. It increased the importance of the problem (salience of this issue) relative to other societal issues (e.g. unemployment, social justice, crime, etc.); it also enhanced participants' sensitivity (respondents' emotions associated with CC) more than the other expressions. We can still note however a strong difference in impact among the expressions if we were to calculate their impact on the basis of risk perception and communication objective. Results showed that when focusing our communication campaigns on nature, it would be preferable to use the term “changement” ("change"), when focusing our communication on social level, it would be preferable to use the term “réchauffement” ("warming"), whereas the term “dérèglement” ("imbalance") becomes the most suitable in seeking to build a communication campaign focusing on economic aspects. Semantics therefore should be selected depending on the communication objective.

Damage, physically and to the psyche is inevitable. This is whether it is caused unconsciously, through consciously malicious intent, thoughtlessness, as collateral or just through a hostile environment or the warring of internal forces. At the group or social level, the last few years have seen much damage in terms of economic recession, climate change, racial inequalities, and domestic violence. The desire to repair follows such damage. The psychoanalytic focus on reparation sees the process as an attempt by a person to repair perceived damage to another or, more precisely, to an internal image of the other—a loved other. Large groups such as organisations and societies also do damage and sometimes acknowledge this and make attempts to repair—perhaps defensively, simply to restore their own reputation, but perhaps from guilt and remorse. This article will invite readers to think about reparation in terms of either fantasied wishfulness, or defensiveness, or its possible restorative capacity. My exploration rests on the premise that damage is always to the system and that both that which damages and that which is damaged suffer. It is in system restoration that hope re-emerges.

This chapter scrutinizes the complex relationship between climate change and theology, as represented in First Reformed, as well as Paul Schrader’s understanding of humanity’s major problems today. Analyzing the issue of ecological decline through the prism of religion, Schrader outlines the ideology that presumably might help humanity survive at the age of global warming. Through the complex discussions of such issues as despair, anxiety, and hope, Schrader deduces the formula of survival in which preservation is the key component. Equating humans to God, Schrader, on the one hand, censures those actions that led to progress but destroyed the environment, yet, on the other hand, he foregrounds the fact that humans can also save the planet now. Schrader portrays both humans and Earth as living organisms created by God. He draws explicit parallels between the current state of our planet and the problems that we experience – from political ones, including war, to more personal ones like health issues.

Scholarship about the role of managed systems when considering the impacts of climate change, the environmental problem arising from polluting-resource use, the economic aspects of strategies to slow climate change, and the connection between climate change and economic growth has increased and consolidated, especially in recent years. The main objective of this chapter is to explore and describe the effects of climate policy on greenhouse gas emissions, the societal aspects of climate change, the technology-based determinants of green growth, and the productivity impacts of environmental quality. The results of the current chapter converge with prior research on the harmful results of climate change, reduced use of polluting inputs as a consequence of environmental policy, the prevailing governmental policies for fighting global warming, and measures to mitigate the temperature increase by reducing CO2 emissions.

Research background: After the summit of G7 held in the United Kingdom, important decisions regarding future actions against global warming were taken. Some of them were appreciated by the environmental supporters but many others tend to have a different view, especially because of lack of details. Purpose of the article: In this article, we will analyse what are the measure proposed by the most powerful and developed countries, members of G7, what is the position of the other big countries (China and Russia) that were not invited, and how this could really contribute to the saving environment progress. Methods: Through descriptive and comparative analysis the paper reveals the financial and technical difficulties to implement these decisions and how they can contribute to a better environment and achieve the COP 21 objective. Findings & Value added: The stress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in all economies didn’t cancel the engagement of countries taken in Paris, to limit the rise of global temperatures to 1.50C comparing to the preindustrial era. The United States even came back on track and, generally speaking, it appears that there is a stronger will to take concrete actions.

Although global warming has been a topic of American and British popular fiction since the 1980s, its literary representation has only recently become an object of academic enquiry. Perhaps a score of German novels on the subject have also appeared, and critical analysis of these is now called for. Following a general outline of the socio-political, philosophical, and ethical issues which climate change raises, and of the particular aesthetic challenges which writing about global warming poses, Ilija Trojanow’s EisTau (Melting Ice, 2011) serves as a basis for discussion of the tensions between confessional and didactic impulses on the one hand, and recognition of the need for an aesthetic facilitating detachment on the other.  Resumen               Aunque el calentamiento global ha aparecido en la literatura popular americana y británica desde los años 80, su representación literaria no se ha converitdo en objeto de investigación académica hasta recientemente. Quizá una veintena de novelas alemanas sobre el tema también han aparecido, requiriendo así un análisis critico. Siguiendo un resumen general de los asuntos socio-políticos, filosóficos y éticos que el cambio climático ha planteado, y de los desafíos estéticos particulares que surgen al escribir sobre el calentamiento global, la novela EisTau (Melting Ice, 2011) de Ilija Trojanow sirve como base para debatir las tensiones entre los impulsos confesionales y didácticos, por un lado, y sobre el reconocimiento de la necesidad de una estética que facilite el desapego, por otro.

On the one hand, this paper examines the costs directly caused by climate change, also com- paring the possible costs for preventing damage; on the other hand, it compares the effects of the radiation propulsion caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on anthropogen- ic heat generation through the use of all types of fuels. In addition to the global warming ef- fect caused by anthropogenic heat radiation, there are also local heat islands that are affect- ed by a much greater rise in temperature. Purpose: A cost comparison of the damage caused by climate change and a quantitative com- parison of the direct heat development through the use of fuels with the radiative forcing through anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.Design / methodology / approach: In both cases, the research method is based on the analysis of public databases such as the International Energy Agency (IAE), as well as published lit- erature on global energy supply and the Federal Statistical Office. Results: The expected consequential damage caused by climate change will probably present most states with insoluble financial burdens. The radiation propulsion from anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions makes an 80 times greater contribution to global warming than the anthropogenic heat generation from all types of fuels. Research / practical implications: Future research should show the consequences for the economy and the acquisition of money on the one hand and on the other hand include the ef- fects of global warming and the heat islands, both of which lead to a loss of habitat. Originality / Value: This paper has both the expected follow-up costs in view as well as the causes and effects of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy saving is a desirable behavior in terms of solving the global warming problem. In order to change people’s behavior from the non-saving to the saving use of air conditioners, for example, the barriers to and benefits of changing their behavior should be investigated. This study collected data from four focus groups consisting of eight adults in each group. Two of the focus groups were non-energy savers in terms of their use of air conditioners while the other two focus groups were energy savers in their use of air conditioners. The results indicated that the barriers to energy saving behavior regarding air conditioners were comfort, habit, and privacy. The benefits of energy saving in relation to the use of air conditioners included saving money, alleviating the climate change situation, saving natural resources, behaving as a good role model for family members, gaining better health, and lengthening the life of the air conditioners.

Orthoptera is a good indicator taxon of macroclimate changes. In our case study, we analyzed data of orthopterans, vegetation, and macroclimate collected yearly from 2002 through 2017 in Central European humid grasslands. During the study period, the annual mean temperature increased, while the relative abundance of moderately hygrophilic orthopteran species decreased significantly. On the other hand, the species richness and diversity of the assemblages increased due, mostly, to an increase of graminicole/thermophilic species. According to our results, the conservation of the hygrophilic orthopteran assemblages of Central European humid grasslands under global warming can only be ensured by adequate land management, which can at least mitigate the effects of climate change resulting in the warming and drying of humid habitats.

Global warming is rapidly changing the physical biosphere in ways that will reverberate well into the future. This chapter explores the relationship between food and climate change. On the one hand, profit-oriented systems of food production contribute to the production of carbon emissions while simultaneously undermining the resilience of natural systems to withstand the effects of climate-related changes. On the other hand, the degradation of natural resources associated with climatic change further perpetuates the demise of existing agricultural and pastoral systems in ways that will continue to generate famine and climate-induced migrations. While climate change has global consequences, the extent of the impact varies depending on the vulnerability of particular locales, social groups and livelihoods. Diverse circumstances will give rise to a range of responses, from the continuation of unsustainable production practices and the systematic hoarding of food, through to widespread social unrest linked to food scarcity and criminality.
