The analysis of cultural context in media texts can contribute to understanding how national images are constructed in the international media discourse. The image of a country is better understood by the audience of another country when it is introduced through familiar cultural concepts and well-known experiences so that specific, culture-bound elements of the other culture are brought closer to the target audience.The research provides linguo-cultural analysis of Russia’s portrayal in political media discourse in English-speaking countries drawing on the approach to political discourse as the process of production and interpretation of a text in meaningful political, social and cultural context.The study is aimed at exploring British and U.S.A. mass media to reveal typical features of the English-language political discourse concerning Russia and to find out how Russia’s image is constructed. In the course of the study we examined culture-bound lexicon in texts of various genres of political discourse in mass media focusing on Russia. Further, the use of Russian culture-bound items without translation in British and American mass media was analyzed, and such items were classified into categories according to their contextual functions.The results indicate that Russia is deeply integrated into the cultural context of the English-speaking audience; it can be said that Russia’s image in the Anglophone political media discourse is outlined with the aid of various cultural-bound associative, connotative and metaphorical links which are familiar for native readers and serve them as a bridge facilitating their understanding and interpretation of Russian culture.

This paper aims to highlight ethnic stereotyping in the English-language mass media political discourse, which is an actual issue since the scope of media texts in English prevails in the global information space, which cannot but affect the viewpoint of an "average" English speaking reader. According to the cognitive linguistic approach, the stereotype is considered to be an element of the cultural and linguistic world view and an integral part of reality categorization mechanism. Ethnic stereotypes are very important in the process of intercultural communication since they can increase its effectiveness and eliminate interethnic problems or they can act vice versa. So auto- and hetero-stereotypes play a significant role in intercultural communication. This fact underlines the relevance of ethnic stereotype studies. The notions of "auto- stereotype” and “hetero-stereotype" are considered in the article, using the examples of English-language political media text headlines. Special attention is given to the headlines of English-language media texts about Russia. Basic features of the stereotype "modern Russia", formed by the English-language media, are defined by the analyzed political media text material.

This article is dedicated to examination of the questions of functionality of evaluative lexis in political discourse of the United States. The relevance of the topic is substantiated by the heightened interests of research towards the peculiarities of expressing evaluative meanings in various types of discourse. In modern linguistics, the analysis of functionality of evaluative lexis in the political discourse is of unequivocal interest, since axiological interpretation significantly affects the life of modern society. Research methodology is comprised of the work of such Russian linguists as I. S. Alekseeva, A. A. Ufimtseva, T. A. Znamenskaya, N. D. Arutyunova, and others. Special attention is given to the method of realization of negative evaluations. The goal of this  article consists in the methods of expression of evaluative meanings s using stylistic means, as the language is an effective weapon in the world of politics. The political texts of US mass media served as the material for this research due to the fact that mass media influence the formation of public opinion, the course of political discussions and referendums, rating of political and public figures, political parties, and public organizations. The conducted analysis demonstrates that the US political discourse includes different lexical and stylistic means applied for exertion of ideological influence, as well as formation of certain attitudes on certain realities of political life among the recipients.

The article discusses the use of metaphors when covering armed conflicts in media. The ambiguous nature of the conflict and the subjectivity of perception of this phenomenon determine the specific usе of metaphor as an evaluative tool capable to change the addressee’s picture of the world. Metaphors are easily activated in the mind of a person, produce an automatic perception of a country's policy, which predetermines their high functionality for propaganda purposes. Ag- gressive rhetoric in political media discourse serves as a means of language manifestation of the goals of ideological suggestion and the creation of suggestive semantic effects. Ideological beliefs and values in the form of political metaphors are manifested and contribute to the implementation of the strategy of discredit in political discourse, influencing the addressee.

The languages history development is a continuous, long and creative process, without sharp jumps or rapid transformations. Usually, a long period of the language development is divided into short parts of history periods, because in the study process of any language history, it is impossible to do without a such division. The periodization, which is offered by linguists, may seem artificial. And it’s quite obvious, because every period of language history development has its special qualitative features, usually the structure, which gives the right to explore a certain period of its historical development. Nowadays, the English language is taught in many countries of the world, as at the secondary school and also at Higher Learning Institutions, it has a priority in modern business relations. English is the international language today, it’s the most widespread in the world, it’s the native language for more than 400 million people and it’s the second language for 300 million. English is the language of commerce and business. English has a very important place as the language of diplomacy, trade and business in many countries. It’s the language of science and technology. Today all instructions and applications for new gadgets are written in English. Scientific reports, articles, reports are published in English. Moreover 90% of Internet resources are English-speaking. The vast majority of information in all spheres – science, sports, news, entertainment - is published in English. It’s the language of youth culture. There are a lot of American actors, actresses, musicians are still very popular today. The English language has one of the richest vocabulary stocks in the world with simple grammar. The words themselves are drawn to each other, forming concise and understandable sentences. This article deals with the patterns of the English language development in the historical and socio-cultural context, the improved approach to groups formation of the English-speaking countries.

The article focuses on the construction N’s + N known as the genitive case structure. Analysis of the data retrieved from two English Language corpora (the BNC and COCA) has demonstrated that the N’s + N structure as a typical grammatical feature of modern mass media discourse realizes certain communicative and discursive properties that constitute the core of this mixed morphological-and-syntactic phenomenon. Thanks to its anthropocentric character, the structure also possesses some functional capacities that make a valuable and indispensable contribution to the organization of meaning in mass media texts.

The article represents the description of ideal cognitive model of LIGHT/DARK archetypical binary opposition, metaphorically represented in the modern American political media discourse. Classific cognitive features and frames, constituting the mental spaces of the dichotomy under consideration are identified and described. The modelling of LIGHT/DARK binary pposition cognitive structure is represented by 3 stages. They are as follows: 1. the cognitive features identifed in the process of archetypical concepts' macrostructures description are referred to archetypical senses forming their mental spaces;2. the categorical structures of arcgetypical concepts are identified as frames or specific cognitive features, makong concepts' cognitive structure more detaoled;3.the character of archetypicak concepts' field organisation is determined by means of identyfying the core, the nearest and the farthest periphery of archetypical binary opposition cognitive structure.The methodology of the research is based on the cognitive-discursive paradigm, cognitive analysis of image making ways of archetypical senses ontologization in the political discourse.The novelty of research consists in representation of the ideal cognitive model of archetypical binary opposition LOGHT/DARK in the political discourse, the main characterisitic of which is conceptual assymetry, predetermining the charachter of interconnections between the components of binary opposition on the cognitive, verbal and discourse levels.

The multidimensionality of rumours as part and parcel of mass communication has stipulated the research in their linguistic nature. The present paper studies this specific communication phenomenon and the discursive practices by means of which it is realized across the Anglophone mass media discourse continuum. The theory of discourse-analysis underpinning the present paper predetermines an integrative approach with various methods employed. This approach makes it possible to gain an insight into the complex nature of the object under study. The research is targeted at media rumours, namely celebrity gossip, manifested in on-line versions of the printed press and original web outlets in 2015-2018. The main goal of the research is to reveal specific features of media rumors as a speech genre in the Anglophone media communication. Celebrity gossip texts make up the empiric material for the present study. This aim is achieved via the description of the content and form of the text-type structure supplemented by an application of stylistic analysis. In terms of the topics, the findings demonstrate a wide variety of topoi comprising both public (social interactions) and private spheres of celebrities’ life with an emphasis on privacy, sensationalism and scandalous impropriety as dominant discursive characteristics of the text-type samples under study. The structure of the celebrity gossip discourse is represented by texts in different journalistic forms: from informative genres to feature type variations used by authors as means of constructing celebrity culture. The information of trivial content and questionable validity because of its unverified character is disguised as reports of high testimonial trustworthiness and epistemic value with the help of a variety of language and textual resources. The results of the study enable us to argue that within the mass media communication there exists a specific discourse which is hybrid by nature and non-evidential by verification.

The semantics of contrast is an essential part of Chinese policy rhetoric which is conveyed through the lens of Chinese values and culture rooted in historical and national memory of the people. The category of opposition reflects Chinese mentality indicating that oppositions in the Chinese language are culturally determined. This semantics in English discourse of Chinese mass media has rarely been the focus of linguists’ attention. The current article presents the results of the research of binary oppositions in Chinese political discourse published in English (ChPDE). This article views linguistic representation of binary oppositions in ChPDE reflecting the Chinese linguistic world image. In this study, the methods of semantic, discourse, linguistic and cultural analysis were applied. It was discovered that in ChPDE, the features of Chinese-English language interference almost disappeared from grammatical and lexical levels, however English text still preserves Chinese connotations determined by the national mentality. It was demonstrated that bipolar world is formed by means of binary oppositions reflected in ChPDE where the semantics of oppositions is manifested by language means mostly on lexical level.
