This paper presents a treatment method in cases where grieving for the death of a child extends beyond normal parameters. The symptoms of interminable grief are likely to continue unless there is direct, and often dramatic intervention. Guidelines for clinical assessment are presented, with particular emphasis upon the investigation of family history in which an early, unresolved death may have occurred. This approach integrates grief work with the individual into a family therapy framework and reflects the notion that grieving, even if identified in one person, is a family affair. Criteria for the inclusion of family members in treatment are considered, the stresses upon the therapist are addressed, a course of treatment is outlined, and two representative cases are presented.

In 209 families with schizophrenic children, 18 families with more than one abnormal child were found. Among the parents of this group there was a high incidence of marital discord, schizoid personalities and different forms of schizophrenia. Among the siblings mental defect, speech delay, and schizophrenia were found. Because of the high incidence of the children in this group functioning on a mentally defective level, special attention was paid to the problem of the intellectual function of all family members. Twenty-four (40%) of the 60 children in these 18 families studied presented a picture of intellectual defects along with schizophrenic process. In three (5%) mental defect was found without typical symptoms of childhood schizophrenia. None of the parents were found to be mentally defective and only one was found to be of borderline intelligence. Twenty (55%) parents were of normal intelligence and 15 (42%) were bright normal to superior, while the corresponding figures for the children were 22 (36.6%) and six (10%). There were only four children whose intellectual function improved while there were 16 who deteriorated considerably. There was an unexplained finding of an unusually high number of twins among the 18 families. We found five pairs of twins. Two pairs were monozygotic, concordant for schizophrenia. Two pairs were dizygotic, discordant for schizophrenia. One of the fifth pair died early; the second was mentally defective.

Narrative therapy is a postmodern therapy approach that suggests that people make sense of their lives through the stories they create. Spirituality plays an active role in the processes of understanding life as a part of the stories of spiritually oriented individuals, couples, and families. The nature of narrative therapy aimed at considering the culture, beliefs, and spiritual values that shape clients’ stories allows spiritually oriented couples and families to express the spiritual dimension they possess within the therapy process of this approach and to use spirituality as a source of power for dealing with problems. This study aims to discuss narrative couples/family therapy and the use of this therapy method within the framework of the related literature by noting ethical rules and incorporating spirituality with spiritually oriented couples and families. Information is provided in this context primarily with regard to narrative therapy, narrative couples/family therapy, the process of narrative couples/family therapy, and the responsibilities of the therapist in this therapy approach. Afterward, case samples in narrative therapy with regard to the importance of spirituality are presented, and the use of spirituality by inclusion in the techniques is explained using narrative couples/family therapy techniques. This study is thought to fill in the missing points that exist with in Turkey’s literature with regard to both narrative couples/family therapy as well as the use of spirituality by incorporating it in family therapy and to provide a different viewpoint to practitioners and researchers in the field.

<p>The therapeutic use of music with older adults with dementia is widely documented, and family involvement is encouraged in both music therapy practice and dementia care services. This qualitative study explores and describes the experience of a student music therapist involving the family members of people with dementia in the music therapy process in a residential care facility. Grounded theory methodology informed analysis of the data sources. Secondary data was analysed and a theoretical perspective regarding family involvement in the music therapy process in this setting was developed. The findings are presented in main categories consisting of: building relationships, sharing information, unplanned family involvement in music therapy sessions, flexibility, spontaneity, joy and humour, and negotiation of the music therapist role in the community of the facility. The emergent theoretical perspective suggests that involving family members in the music therapy process in residential care facility is valuable in fostering and strengthening a sense of community between residents, family members and care staff.</p>

The ability of progenitor cells to exit the cell cycle is essential for proper embryonic development and homeostasis, but the mechanisms governing cell cycle exit are still not fully understood. Here, we tested the requirement for the retinoblastoma (Rb) protein and its family members p107 and p130 in G0/G1 arrest and differentiation in mammalian cells. We found that Rb family triple knockout (TKO) mouse embryos survive until days 9–11 of gestation. Strikingly, some TKO cells, including in epithelial and neural lineages, are able to exit the cell cycle in G0/G1 and differentiate in teratomas and in culture. This ability of TKO cells to arrest in G0/G1 is associated with the repression of key E2F target genes. Thus, G1 arrest is not always dependent on Rb family members, which illustrates the robustness of cell cycle regulatory networks during differentiation and allows for the identification of candidate pathways to inhibit the expansion of cancer cells with mutations in the Rb pathway.

Abstract Midlife is a transitional period with considerable stress related to health changes and interpersonal responsibilities. Understanding how self-perception of aging and family function affect stress is essential to improve quality of life in midlife and beyond. The purpose of this study was to examine the association among self-perception of aging, family function, and stress with a specific focus on the interaction between self-perception of aging and family function, which affect stress in midlife Koreans. This is a cross-sectional study. Data on a convenience sample of 249 midlife Koreans (age mean= 50.6, 50.1% male) were collected through a self-administered survey and analyzed using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. Self-perception of aging was significantly related to family function (r= -.121, p=.045), and family function was related to stress (r= -.402, p&lt;.000). Self-perception of aging was a significant predictor for stress (β= -.130, p=.008) after adjusting for age, gender, subjective health status, and chronic health problems. A significant interaction between family function and self-perception of aging on stress was found (β= -.261, p=.006), indicating that the influence of self-perception of aging on stress was different depending on family function. Self-perception of aging was a strong predictor of stress in individuals who reported poorer support from family members, but not in those who reported better support. Our findings emphasize the importance of supportive family function, which could regulate the impact of self-perception of aging on stress in midlife. Developing psycho-cognitive interventions to improve self-perception of aging and supportive interaction between family members is warranted.
