This paper describes a pilot series of extension programs delivered to inmates within the Mississippi Department of Corrections system. The project was a collaboration between the Chickasaw County Regional Correctional Facility, state Extension forestry specialists, and county Extension staff. A large body of research describes benefits of inmate education, including lower recidivism and reducing tension that could otherwise lead to behavioral problems. Over four months, Mississippi State University Extension personnel worked with prison officials to educate inmates about forestry, logging, and arboriculture. This paper describes the collaborative process driving the project as well as program design, curriculum, materials, and delivery. Besides technical information, instructors discussed opportunities and challenges inmates may encounter if they were to pursue employment in forestry or tree care following their sentences. Instructors worked closely with prison staff to appropriately address teaching in a unique environment and the educational needs of the students. We present the student evaluation process, which was limited by prison rules. Finally, we present results from an evaluation of partners and instructors that elaborate on pitfalls, challenges, and opportunities. The Department of Corrections was highly satisfied with the program and has requested expansion to facilities across the state.

Students’ feedback on faculty performance is an influential measure in obtaining the objectives of teaching effectiveness. Southern Leyte State University-Tomas Oppus usually experiences student evaluation reactions on faculty performance. Considering that success of the evaluation process is the instrument itself, this research dealt with students’ degree program profile and academic performance; determined their opinion on the criteria’s appropriateness and the instrument’s validity, reliability, objectivity, and utility and their attitude upon it; and, determined relationship between academic performance and degree program on opinions of the four criteria. Through the descriptive one shot survey, stratified sampling was employed to college freshmen, juniors and seniors with different courses of SY 2010-2011. The mean, percentage, frequency, and chisquare were used. The students’ opinion on the appropriateness of the criteria was very appropriate and very high on the four criteria. They manifested positive attitude on the instrument. Their academic performance and degree program have no significant relationship with their opinion on the instrument. Student’s opinion of the evaluation instrument was very appropriate, yet, it has to be revisited because some items, though minimal, were moderately appropriate. Keywords - Performance Evaluation Instrument, Southern Leyte State University-Tomas Oppus

The report shows the results of the Russian-Ethiopian historic and ethnographic expedition – a joint scientific project of two countries, successfully implemented in the early 1990s. Advanced results achieved by this expedition were much owed to participation of several leading Russian and Ethiopian scientific centers and universities – the Institute for African Studies, the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Addis Ababa University and Institute for Ethiopian Studies, The Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations, and others. The participants of the expedition gathered and summarized a large body of data acquired during opinion polls, held in the course of the visits to a number of educational, medical, economic and manufacturing centers and organizations, including workshops, agricultural farms, banks, scientific centers. The collected scientific data has allowed, based on multi-factor analysis, to specify the nature of evolutionary processes in communal relations, efficiency of various aspects of federalism policy in a cosmopolitan country. Its value is reflected by applicability and sharp demand for a scientific view on one of the most troubled sides of social and political life of many African countries, and of the modern world. Based on the field research, a high number of articles and monographs have been prepared and published in the Russian Federation. They include “Report on Field Studies of Ethiopia Carried Out by Russian Historical, Ethnic, Sociological, Expedition, 1990–1992”, “Ethiopia: History, Culture and Ethnicity”, “Ethiopia: the Particular Features of Federalism”, “Drama in Modern Ethiopian Literature and Theatre”, “Mission in Ethiopia. African Policy of the USSR in the eyes of the Soviet Diplomat. 1956–1982”, two volumes of “Africa” encyclopedia and others.

Background: Higher education institutions have executed policies and practices intended to determine and promote good teaching. Students’ evaluation of the teaching and learning process is seen as one measure of evaluating quality and effectiveness of instruction and courses. Policies and procedures guiding this process are discernible in universities, but it isoften not the case for nursing colleges.Objective: To analyse and describe the views of nursing students on block evaluation, and how feedback obtained from this process was managed.Method: A quantitative descriptive study was conducted amongst nursing students (n = 177) in their second to fourth year of training from one nursing college in KwaZulu-Natal. A questionnaire was administered by the researcher and data were analysed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences Version 19.0.Results: The response rate was 145 (81.9%). The participants perceived the aim of block evaluation as improving the quality of teaching and enhancing their experiences as students.They questioned the significance of their input as stakeholders given that they had never been consulted about the development or review of the evaluation tool, or the administration process; and they often did not receive feedback from the evaluation they participated in.Conclusion: The college management should develop a clear organisational structure with supporting policies and operational guidelines for administering the evaluation process. The administration, implementation procedures, reporting of results and follow-up mechanisms should be made transparent and communicated to all concerned. Reports and actions related to these evaluations should provide feedback into relevant courses or programmes.Keywords: Student evaluation of teaching; perceptions; undergraduate nursing students; evaluation process

A large body of knowledge on database tuning is available in the form of natural language text. We propose to leverage natural language processing (NLP) to make that knowledge accessible to automated tuning tools. We describe multiple avenues to exploit NLP for database tuning, and outline associated challenges and opportunities. As a proof of concept, we describe a simple prototype system that exploits recent NLP advances to mine tuning hints from Web documents. We show that mined tuning hints improve performance of MySQL and Postgres on TPC-H, compared to the default configuration.

While the ongoing global warming and the economic crisis threaten horticultural and ornamental products production in the Mediterranean region, new challenges and opportunities for renewing plant material occur. Pitaya has great potential as a new crop for Mediterranean growers: it consumes little water and it adapts well to the high temperatures present in the greenhouse. Moreover, the market shows increasing demand of new, healthy exotic fruits and the fruit of these crops are worldwide appreciated as a super fruits. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of introducing a new type of product that in addition to the aesthetic value can combine functional nutritional characteristics, through a whole chain approach, in order to develop basic knowledges and technical information that may lead to the commercial production of pitaya by small-scale farmers in Italy. The results of this study report and discuss various aspects to support the establishment of pitaya cultivation, such as its propagation by cuttings and micropropagation, greenhouse cultivation practices (through the clarification of the sprouting and flowering phenology as well as the fruit maturation period), while providing also information on the sensory properties and the antioxidant levels which naturally occurring in these fruits.

Through the lens of two courses at Portland State University (PSU), this article addresses critical service learning pedagogy as transformational for both incarcerated youth and university students. In one course, PSU students share a writing/art workshop with youth in juvenile detention though The Beat Within ( www.thebeatwithin.org ). Another course brings together PSU students and young men incarcerated at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in an inside/out course format ( www.insideoutcenter.org ). Working collaboratively, students have developed a variety of service-learning projects. This article explores the impact of critical service learning courses on both incarcerated young people and university students.

Student personal and professional development is an area of increasing importance in professional education programs. The practitioner of the future needs to be able to reflect and self-assess his/her learning in order to take intentional steps toward developing or continuing competency. The purpose of this article is to describe the evolution of one program’s process of incorporating self-reflection and feedback as an integral part of the curriculum. Examples of the guiding questions are included. The value of a self-reflective student evaluation process in the development of reflective practice and its implementation within a professional healthcare curriculum and future practice environments are discussed.

Evaluating faculty members' performance is a very complex area to study. In addition, predicting the performance of these faculty members is a very difficult and challenging task. However, the core of education is teaching and learning, and teaching-learning works to its fullest when there are effective teachers. Measuring the effectiveness of faculty members is done based on the student evaluation of faculty. This research aims to develop a model to predict the performance of the faculty members using associative rule based on the existing evaluation form used by PSU to evaluate faculty members. The model is designed to utilize the knowledge of text analytics rule capabilities that will provide great support for the decision-making of Pangasinan State University in the Philippines. The result reveals that the term good is still the top one terms occurred for all campuses followed by teaching. The results indicated that teacher/faculty members on all campuses are good teachers. Associating words reveal that "teaching good subject/topic," "explains simply" and other meaningful associated words can be utilized to evaluate the performance of the teacher. The results exposed not only the quantitative values of faculty evaluation it also exposed the qualitative opinion of the students in the performance of their faculty members. This study reveals important aspects of the faculty member's teaching performance in terms of words/association of words that will describe their teaching performance. The results can be utilized in coaching and mentoring faculty members to cope with their weaknesses. The proposed model can be utilized by Pangasinan State University to evaluate the faculty members in terms of their teaching performance by utilizing the comments/opinions of the students.
