When carrying out mining operations, a rock massif responds to technological impacts in the form of developing strains and fractures. Under certain conditions, this response occurs as dynamic and gas dynamic destructions of rocks with intensive release of energy, which creates threats to security and disrupts a working technology. To substantiate the optimal mining technology, which would be maximum adequate to the specific geological and geomechanical conditions of a deposit development, it is necessary to organize a comprehensive monitoring of geomechanical processes in rock massifs. The paper considers general principles to organize the geomechanical monitoring under conditions of the hierarchically-blocked rock massifs in the gravitational-tectonic field of the natural stress state. The authors give main recommendations for managing geomechanical processes in the rock mass for various mining methods.

The article describes the experience in which the argumented parameters of the sublevel caving system in the conditions of mining operations take into account the Khibiny apatite-nepheline deposits. The stress state of the massif under the given conditions is determined by the parameters of the initial gravitational-tectonic field stresses, which have a complex distribution and redistribution for each individual isolating situation, which, in turn, is determined by the zone of the bearing pressure from the overlying stages. The necessary consideration of the factors indicated determined the order of the research: the parameters of regional field stress should be determined using the global numerical model of the deposit; after this, in order to justify the parameters of mining methods in local areas, it is necessary to make local numerical simulation for each area. All calculations were performed using Simulia Abaqus software, which implements the finite element method. Thus, the article presents numerical simulation of the stressed state of the massif of areas of “Plato Rasvumchorr” and “Apatitovii Tsirk” deposits and further describes the order of intersection of the results with the help of a global numerical model to a local numerical model of stope block at + 310 m at the Rusvumchorr mine. There are fixed minimum pillar sizes according to the accepted mining method in numerical simulation results using multiscale models.

Decision-making is very important in many fields, such as mining engineering. In addition, there has been a growth of computer applications in all fields, especially mining operations. One of these application fields is mine design and the selection of suitable mining methods, and computer applications can help mine engineers to decide upon and choose more satisfactory methods. The selection of mining methods depends on the rock-layer specification. All rock characteristics should be classified in terms of technical and economic concerns related to mining rock specifications, such as mechanical and physical properties, and evaluated according to their weights and ratings. Methodologically, in this study, the criteria considered in the University of British Columbia (UBC) method were used as references to establish general criteria. These criteria consist of general shape, ore thickness, ore plunge, and grade distribution, in addition to the rock quality designation (ore zone, hanging wall, and foot wall) and rock substance strength (ore zone, hanging wall, and foot wall). The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) was adopted, and an improved TOPSIS method was developed based on experimental testing and checked by means of the application of cascade forward backpropagation neural networks in mining method selection. The results provide indicators that decision makers can use to choose between different mining methods based on the total points given to all ore properties. The best mining method is cut and fill stopping, with a rank of 0.70, and the second is top slicing, with a rank of 0.67.

Sustainability of mining companies is of of high concern. The problem is specifically acute at companies that are monotownor monosettlement-forming. Sustainability of a mine depends in many ways on product quality and production resource-intensity. This article discusses formation of mineral quality indexes in terms of an open pit chrysotile mine. The studies took into account specific features of operation procedures implemented by each structural division of the mine. The analysis has found managerial and technological inconsistencies which affect quality and marketable product output, as well as efficiency of the mine in whole. The background for efficiency enhancement at a company is, by the authors’ opinion, consolidation of personnel subject to the single development strategy, namely: improvement of production and control efficiency, as well as use of available reserves and resources by means of better setup for production. The proposed approaches to planning mining operations and forming mineral quality allow higher quality of processing stock. In addition, a new model proposed for interaction between structural divisions of a mining company ensures improvement of general production indexes.

The article addresses the issues of ensuring safe operation of mining equipment in surface mining. It describes the main factors and situations that pose a high risk to human life and health. The most dangerous incidents are shown to be related to limited visibility and blind spots for operators of mining equipment, which can result in collisions and personnel run over. The main technologies and specific solutions used to design collision avoidance systems are described and their general comparison is provided. A particular focus is placed on monitoring the health of employees at their workplace by means of portable personal devices that promptly inform the dispatcher of emergency situations. General technical requirements are formulated for designing of the system to prevent equipment collisions and personnel run over in surface mining operations. The paper emphasizes the importance of introducing a multifunctional safety system in surface mines in order to minimise the possibility of incidents and accidents throughout the entire production cycle.
