This paper presents results of tribological tests performed under lubricated friction conditions using a T-01M analyser. The lubricant was biodegradable cutting fluid containing a special-purpose additive – zinc aspartate. The discs for the ball-on-disc configuration were made of HS6-5-2C steel. The study involved testing coated and uncoated steel specimens. The a-C:H and TiAlN coatings were produced using physical vapour deposition (PVD). The structure of the coatings was analysed before and after the tribological tests with a JSM-7100F scanning electron microscope. The coating hardness was measured using a CSM Instruments nano-hardness tester (NHT). The coating surface texture of the coated and uncoated discs was determined by means of a Talysurf CCI Lite profilometer. The thin boundary films that formed in the friction area prevented the surfaces from coming into direct contact. The films improved the motion resistance and provided anticorrosive protection during the tests. The biodegradable cutting fluid used in the study had no negative effect on the environment.

AbstractThe purpose of the study was to evaluate the properties of diamond-like carbon DLC coatings with ionic liquids and cutting fluid containing zinc aspartate used as lubricants. The DLC coatings (a–C:H) were deposited onto the 100Cr6 steel substrate by physical vapour deposition PVD. The surface morphology testing, cross section and chemical composition analyses of the DLC coatings were performed using the scanning electron microscope, equipped with an EDS microanalyzer. Surface geometry measurements prior to and after tribological tests were performed on a confocal microscope with interferometry. The tribological tests were carried out on an Anton Paar TRB3 tribometer under technically dry friction and lubricated conditions with an ionic liquid, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide and 1–butyl– 3–methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide and cutting fluid with zinc aspartate. The results show that DLC coatings and ionic liquids can significantly reduce resistance to motion.

This paper discusses the results of wear tests performed with a T-01 M tribometer for a ball-on-disc configuration in sliding contact. The tests were carried out for HS6-5-2C steel discs with and without a TiAlN coating deposited by physical vapour deposition (PVD), which were in contact with 100Cr6 steel balls. The tests were conducted under dry friction conditions and under lubricated friction conditions with a cutting fluid containing zinc aspartate. The coating structure was observed using a JSM - 7100F scanning electron microscope. The surface texture of the discs and the balls was analysed as well as good adhesion to the substrate. Coated tools can operate under dry and wet machining conditions, and they improve the operating parameters of the element. Such coatings can be produced by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), physical vapour deposition (PVD), or similar techniques [L. 8, 4, 13].

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the biodegradable cutting fluid used instead of classical, usually toxic. This paper presents the results of tribological studies of a-C:H coatings formed on HS6-5-2C steel by plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition. The coating structures were examined using a JSM-7100F SEM. The coating microhardness was measured with a Matsuzawa tester. The surface texture analysis was performed before and after the tribological tests with a Talysurf CCI Lite optical profiler. The tribological properties were investigated using a T-01 M tester and a T-17 tester. The tests were carried out under dry friction conditions and lubricated friction conditions using a lubricant with zinc aspartate. The test results show that the layer formed at the interface prevented the moving surfaces. The investigations discussed in this paper have contributed to the development of non-toxic and environmentally-friendly manufacturing because of the use of biodegradable cutting fluid and thin, hard coatings.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the activity-based workspace (ABW) on employee belonging. Place attachment theory (PAT) is used as a proxy to understand and measure the belongingness of employees to their physical workplaces. Design/methodology/approach A case study of a bank’s newly retrofitted ABW office is conducted, providing fresh perspectives on the effect of ABW on employee belonging. A questionnaire survey was used to understand employee belongingness. Surveys are conducted with employees of the bank (n = 100) who experienced the transition from the conventional open-plan office with designated seats to an ABW, to understand and compare the change in employee belonging after the transition, by studying the level of belonging achieved in the space before and after. Findings The results showed that there was a positive sense of belongingness amongst employees working in the ABW space, as per the PAT framework and an increased sense of belongingness compared with the previous conventional open-plan office. However, ABWs were found to also have a negative effect on employees’ sense of control and security. Originality/value Maslow’s hierarchy of needs indicates that a feeling of belonging is fundamental to humans. The need for belonging is also applicable in the workplaces of today’s progressive corporate organisations, where there is increased pressure and incentive to appeal to and retain talent. This research was conducted in response to the huge growth in interest in activity-based working across the corporate real estate community. As there has been no prior research done in the area of the emotional need for belongingness in ABW.

Abstract This work investigates the hardness and buckling force of penile prosthesis to further understand the rigidity of penile prosthesis before and after implantation. Evaluated herein are four prosthetic samples (inflatable 3, semi-rigid 1), five realities (inflatable 1, semi-rigid 4), and one after implantation of prosthesis. The hardness is measured with a hardness tester by pressing the tester’s indentor to the surface of the specimen. In addition, a patient after implantation is evaluated with respect to the hardness of penile versus various numbers of pumping. The buckling force of the prosthesis is also determined by a push-pull gauge and special designed sampling table. Results in this study demonstrate that although the inflatable prosthesis could only be pumped to a certain amount of hardness, hardness and buckling force correlate well with each other. After reaching the extreme hardness, prostheses can even be further pumped a few times. However, continuous pumping only puts more tension on the prosthetic material without increasing any hardness and could induce to mechanical failure of prosthesis. Results also indicate that the buckling force decreases with increasing length of the semi-rigid prostheses, and, then, enlarged when the prosthesis has a larger diameter. This in vitro non-invasive mechanical measurement of the rigidity in penile prosthesis can provide not only clinicians with further information about the penile prosthesis before implantation, but also the patients with more confidence in the prosthesis usage after implantation.

The present study aims to investigate the corrosion characteristics of copper commonly encountered in the spark ignition (SI) engine fuel system with Malaysian bioethanol and gasoline blends. Static immersion tests in E0 (gasoline), E10 and E85 were carried out at room temperature for 1320 h. Mechanical, physical and chemical properties of copper was investigated before and after immersion tests. Investigations were carried out on change in morphological properties using optical microscope; change in chemical structure using FTIR; change in mass and volume by weight loss measurement; hardness changes using universal hardness tester; and change of chemical properties of the fuel blends using total acid number titration method. The test results showed that corrosion of copper was increased with the high concentration of ethanol in the blends.

Marine reserves exhibit increases in targeted fish species, but long-term effects on biodiversity are poorly understood. Factors other than reserve status may affect decadal changes, including environmental change. We examined the fish fauna at the iconic Poor Knights Islands over 4 decades (1974–2016) before and after implementation of a no-take marine reserve in 1998. We document a substantial increase in commercially and recreationally targeted Chrysophrys auratus, which was virtually absent before 1994 but by 2016 had reached up to 11 fish per 500m2 (220 per hectare). There were also large changes to the fish community, including the decline of subtropical and coastal wrasses, some species with no change and others that increased significantly. Many declines occurred >20 years before the arrival of abundant C. auratus, suggesting the changes do not represent a trophic cascade. Furthermore, this normally benthic-feeding fish has adopted a mid-water foraging behaviour targeting planktivorous fish. The increase in C. auratus appears to be linked both to reserve status and catch regulations in the wider region. Overall, the data point to long-term environmental fluctuations from the late 1970s having a negative effect on the abundance of more than half the reef fish species at these islands.

This study investigated the effectiveness of a creative physical education (CPE) intervention on students’ perceptions of motivational climate in physical education (PE), leisure-time physical activity (PA) motivation, and overall PA. A sample of 382 fourth to sixth grade students ( Mage= 10.87[.93]) from two elementary schools were assigned to the CPE intervention ( n = 196; Mage= 10.84[.95]) and control ‘PE-as-usual’ ( n = 186; Mage= 10.90[.90]) groups. Students’ perceived task- and ego-supportive climate in PE, leisure-time PA motivation, and overall PA were measured before and after the one-year intervention. Analyses of covariance and path analyses were implemented to test the effectiveness of the intervention. The intervention had a positive effect on students’ perceptions of task-supportive climate in PE ( p < .001) and a negative effect on ego-supportive climate ( p < .001). Students’ perceptions of task-supportive climate had a positive effect on their leisure-time PA motivation ( p < .001), which, in turn, had a positive effect on their overall PA ( p < .001). The results suggest that CPE-based PE may increase students’ perceptions of task-supportive climate in PE, which predicts their later leisure-time PA motivation outside the school context and overall PA.

The number of studies that assess the level of maintenance in a country is still very small, despite the contribution of this area to national competitiveness. The literature analyses asset management based on key performance indicators, but not via a multicriteria model. This chapter describes a multicriteria model, constructed by means of the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP). The weightings are converted into utility functions, allowing the final utility of an alternative to be calculated via a multi-attribute utility function. Data on the state of asset management in Spain, in 2005 and 2010, are used to produce discrete probability distributions. Finally, a Monte Carlo simulation is applied to estimate the uncertainty of a complex function. In this way, the level of excellence of asset management in small businesses in Spain, before and after the recession, could be determined. The results show that the economic crisis experienced in Spain since 2008 has had a negative effect on the level of asset management in most sectors.
