Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate morphological, biochemical, and rheological blood indicators in men staying in a cryochamber at a temperature of -50°C for 24 hours. In 2018, a scientific-survival project ‘Taming the Frost’ was conducted at the Technoclimatic Research and Working Machines Laboratory of the Cracow University of Technology, under the scientific patronage of the Rector of the Cracow University of Technology, Prof. Jan Kazior, PhD, as well as the Rector of the University of Physical Education in Krakow, the late Prof. Aleksander Tyka, PhD, and the Vice-Rector for Science, Prof. Anna Marchewka, PhD. Material and methods: The blood for the tests was collected from an ulnar vein in fasting participants by a qualified nurse, in the morning, before entering the cryochamber and after 24 hours, i.e. on leaving the cryochamber. Morphological, biochemical, and rheological blood indicators were evaluated. The study group of the scientific-survival project ‘Taming the Frost’ involved men (n=6) who stayed in a cryochamber at a temperature of -50°C for 24 hours. For each participant, a 5-ml blood sample was placed in a tube (BD Vacutainer) with EDTA K2 anticoagulant for blood morphology and blood rheological evaluations in the Blood Physiology Laboratory of the Central Research and Development Laboratory, University of Physical Education in Krakow. Another 5-ml blood sample was placed in a Vacuette tube with a clotting activator for the remaining biochemical analyses in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry of the Krakow Branch of Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology. Results: After leaving the cryochamber with a temperature of –50°C, the participants presented statistically significant increases in monocyte count and high-density lipoprotein and creatine kinase values, as well as decreases in IgA, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. In the assessment of blood rheological indicators, statistically significant increases in the elongation index at the shear stress of 0.30, 0.58, 1.13, and 2.19 Pa and decreases in the elongation index at the shear stress of 31.03 and 60.3 Pa were observed. For red cell aggregation indicators, a statistically significant increase in total aggregation time was reported. The other indicators exhibited a significance level of p>0.05. Conclusions: Staying in a cryochamber at a temperature of -50°C for 24 hours did not exert a negative impact on morphological, biochemical, or rheological blood indicators, which implies the subjects’ adaptation to the arranged conditions.

Abstract Aim Bowel movements after reconstructive anorectal surgery may negatively affect surgical outcome. This study was aimed to assess any differences between a standard diet (SD) and the enteral resorbable diet (ED) in terms of operative outcomes and patient tolerance after fistulectomy with primary sphincter reconstruction. Method Adult patients undergoing elective fistulectomy with primary sphincter reconstruction for anorectal and rectovaginal fistulas were eligible for inclusion. Patients were intraoperatively randomised to receive either the ED and peristalsis-inhibiting medication (ED) or a SD. The primary endpoint was the healing rate. Secondary endpoints included continence scores, complications and quality of life. Sample size calculation resulted in the analysis of 60 patients to detect a difference in fistula recurrence of 30% with 70% power and a 5% significance level. Results Sixty-six patients (24 women) were prospectively and randomly assigned to the ED (n = 34: 51%) or a SD (n = 32; 48%); mean age was 47 (18-74) years. The primary healing rate was 64 out of 66 patients (96%). No statistical difference in healing rate was seen between the groups. However, patient satisfaction was significantly higher in the SD group (P < 0.0001). Conclusions Fistulectomy with primary sphincter reconstruction is a safe method with low complication rates. Postoperative stool behaviour has no significant influence on the healing rate but has a significant negative impact on patient satisfaction. Therefore, maintaining a standard diet seems to be preferable following reconstructive anal surgery. Trial registration The trial was registered with the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00020524).

Abstract. The objective of this research is to show how people with disabilities are represented in Physical Education textbooks in use in Primary Education. The study design is empirical, descriptive, and focuses on comparing between the analyzed textbooks. A sample of 3,836 images were collected from textbooks published in Spain between 2006 and 2013, under the Organic Law of Education (LOE). A research technique based on content analysis was employed through a tailor-made system of categories, which was previously tested for validity and reliability in a pilot study, by consulting experts, as well as by intercoder agreement test. The statistical analysis of data was performed using the software SPSS 19.0. Univariate and bivariate analysis with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Levene test and Pearson Chi-Square test were performed, setting the significance level at 5%. Results showed that people with disabilities are mostly excluded in these images, especially impaired women. Disabled people are represented as Caucasian, either children or youth with a physical disability, mostly using wheelchair. Physical activity appearing in this group is associated with sports at a competitive and maximum level. These results are far from the inclusion of disability in today's society and specifically in textbooks of Physical Education in Primary Education within the Spanish educational system.

Background and Objective: Prerequisite for oxygen transport to the tissue is the ability of erythrocytes to change from a discoid into an elongated form in order to pass microvessels. Cell salvage is highly recommended to decrease blood loss and to avoid allogeneic transfusions in perioperative bleeding. The purpose of our study was to assess deformability of erythrocytes at re-transfusion. Materials and Methods: After ethics committee approval and informed consent, blood was withdrawn from the autotransfusion system (Xtra, Sorin, Germany) of 24 patients undergoing joint arthroplasty 6 hours after cell salvage initiation. Deformability curves, elongation indices (EI) obtained at increasing shear stress (SS) were assessed by using Laser Optical Rotational Red Cell Analysis (LORRCA). Results: Erythrocytes showed the typical sigmoid EI/SS curve with a mean maximum elongation index (EImax) of 0.593 ± 0.034 and mean half-maximal deformation (SS ½) of 1.186 ± 0.387 Pa. Irregular curve shapes and high variability in EI occurred at shear stress < 3 Pa. Recalculation of outcome parameters resulted in higher values (EImax 0.610 ± 0.035; SS ½ 1.562 ± 0.346 Pa). Conclusion: Erythrocytes after autologous cell salvage are not stiff but elongate in response to shear stress. Erythrocytes showed the typical EI/SS-curve of human red cells, which indicates that the cells are able to uptake the hydrodynamic forces that act on them during the measurement. Further research is needed to investigate the effect of cell salvage processing on erythrocytes from patients with pre-existing hematological disorders.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the impact of malocclusion on the quality of life of children aged 8 to 10 years attending public elementary schools in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: The Brazilian version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire 8-10 (CPQ8-10) was used to evaluate oral health-related quality of life. The children were examined for the diagnosis of malocclusion using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The data were analyzed by bivariate and multivariate descriptive statistics using Poisson regression at a 5% significance level. A total of 270 children participated in the study. Results: Children with normal occlusion or mild malocclusion (DAI ≤ 25) were 56% less likely (95%CI: 0.258-0.758; p= 0.003) to have their quality of life affected compared with children diagnosed with extremely severe malocclusion (DAI ≥ 36). Children with a maxillary anterior overjet ≥ 3 mm had higher CPQ8-10 mean scores (19.4; SD = 17.1) than those with an overjet < 3 mm (13.6; SD = 11.7; p= 0.038). Conclusions: Extremely severe malocclusion and pronounced maxillary anterior overjet were associated with a negative impact on quality of life.

The Second World-Wide Survey of Physical Education in schools, published under the auspices of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, identifies large gaps between the promise of positive outcomes of physical education and actual outcomes. The mismatch between the policy and practice of physical education stems from deep-seated disagreements about what the goals of physical education should be; the multifaceted nature of the subject; and a lack of competence, confidence, and accountability among the teachers who are responsible for teaching physical education in schools, among other things. According to the World Health Organization, the physical and holistic health of young people and adults is threatened by increases in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers—in part due to increased sedentary modern lifestyles and insufficient exercise. Physical education has the potential to ameliorate the negative impact of sedentary lifestyles and exercise insufficiency. Teacher-education programs for physical education the world over advertise that teachers of the subject help young people acquire a love for physical activity and the skills to practice and enjoy sports; they also teach life skills, including teamwork, sportsmanship, problem-solving, and creativity, and help students develop the habits of a healthy lifestyle. How programs prepare physical-education teachers to deliver on these promises varies considerably. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Singapore has one of the best-performing teacher-education systems in the world. It is run by the National Institute of Education in Singapore. The tight coupling of theory and practice and the tripartite relationship between the policymakers at the Ministry of Education; the National Institute of Education, where teacher training occurs; and the schools, where physical education is experienced, are the key determinants of a quality physical-education experience among children and adolescents in Singapore.

The influence of fibrinogen on the flow properties of red cell suspensions (hematocrit 41) was studied by viscometry at low rates of shear (0.1–20 sec–1). These findings were correlated with sedimentation rates and photomicrographical studies of cell aggregation. Fibrinogen concentration was varied from 0.3 to 2.0 g/100 ml. The viscosity of the pure solutions of fibrinogen was independent of shear rate, ranging from 0.87 to 1.7 centipoise (cp) at 37 C. The viscosity of the cell suspensions at 10 sec–1 varied from 4.3 cp in 0.3 g/100 ml fibrinogen to 14 cp in 2 g/100 ml fibrinogen. All suspensions were markedly dependent on shear rate, viscosity increasing in exponential-like fashion as shear rate decreased. Extrapolation of plots of shear stress1/2 versus shear rate1/2 revealed the suspensions to sustain a finite stress without deformation or flow, the "yield value" increasing as fibrinogen concentration increased. Photomicrographs of dilute cell suspensions revealed the formation of cell aggregates and rouleaux, increasing in size and descent velocity as fibrinogen concentration increased.

This study has explored the valence of sibship that may empower the self-esteem of children with asthma at the interpersonal, environmental control competence, emotionality management, and body-image levels. It has been assumed that the relationship between siblings may have a moderating effect on the negative impact that asthma has on child’s development. Seventy children suffering from chronic asthma have been involved: 40 children with siblings (experimental group) and 30 sibling-free children (control group). The children with asthma have exhibited higher levels of self-esteem in comparison with the sibling-free children. The results of the study, at the clinical significance level, highlight how meaningful could be the involvement of healthy siblings to support the development, and to ease the compliance of children suffering from asthma. The outcomes have confirmed the supportive valence of sibship for the self-esteem of the children with asthma.

Purpose – This paper aims to examine whether authorized generics (AGs) have influenced prices and market shares in markets for molecules facing generic competition in South Africa. AGs (clones), which are identical to the originator brands, offer a solution for originator companies to protect their markets from independent generic (IG) competition. IG competitors have claimed that AGs have a negative impact on pricing and competition. Design/methodology/approach – In a retrospective analysis, pricing and quantity data for 24 months post generic entry were extracted for oral solid dosage form products which experienced generic entry into their markets between 2005 and 2011, divided into “Authorized generic affected” and “no authorized generic” markets. A series of indices was calculated, as well as market shares of competing originator and generic products, and the number of generic competitors determined. Indices and market share data for clone affected and unaffected groups were tested at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months using unmatched t-tests, at a 95 per cent significance level. Findings – None of the evaluated pricing indices showed a consistently significant difference existing between AG-affected and no-AG samples. The only variable for which the two samples consistently differed was market shares, with originator brands experiencing significantly more market share erosion in AG-affected markets. Pricing levels of generics and originator products as well as growth of numbers of generic competitors were similar in both AG-affected and no-AG groups. Originality/value – A study of this nature on the impacts of AGs in the South African generics has not been previously published and reflects the situation particular to the country.
