On the 4th of July 2014, a Sattelite Symposium on Bioethics was held during The First Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony of The European Society For Person Centered Healthcare, including a simple act of homage to Dr. Edmund Pellegrino. The necessity for training in medical ethics and bioethics is increasingly well acknowledged by both medical practitioners, medical students and indeed patients. This observation led to the Spanish CEEM (Consejo Estatal de Estudiantes de Medicina, España), in co-operation with The National Conference of Deans of Faculties of Medicine of Spain (Conferencia Nacional de Decanos de las Facultades de Medicina, España) and the OMC (Organización Médica Colegial) to create a guide entitled “Ethical Recommendations for Clinical Practice.”

Introduction: The high degree of religious/spiritual involvement that brings meaning and purpose to a patients’ life, especially when they are weakened by pain, is among the various reasons to consider the spiritual dimension in clinical practice. This involvement may influence medical decisions and, therefore, should be identified in the medical history of a patient (anamnesis). Objective: To verify the opinion of undergraduate medical students of the Paulista School of Medicine – Federal University of São Paulo regarding the use of a patient’s Spirituality/Religiosity as a therapeutic resource in clinical practice.Method: Quantitative approach of the transversal analytical observational type. The sample was composed of academics’ medical program, from the first to the sixth year, regularly enrolled in 2017. Data collection was performed with a standardized questionnaire divided into three sections: sociodemographic profile; Duke University Religious Index; Spirituality/Religiosity in the clinical and academic context. Results: Participated in the survey 72% of the enrolled students, of which 61.4% had religious affiliation, 26.2% declared themselves agnostic and 12.4% atheists. All of them proposed to answer questions about the insertion of Spirituality/Religiosity in the patient care process. Through the Duke Religiosity Index, we evaluated the importance of religiosity in the student’s personal life and the pertinence of religiosity as a therapeutic insertion for medical treatment. Regarding the clinical and academic context, most participants considered relevant the proposition of didactic-pedagogical actions in medical education related to the spiritual dimension of the patient. Conclusion: We conclude, through our research, that the insertion of the Spirituality/Religiosity of the patient as a therapeutic resource in clinical practice is feasible for most undergraduate students in Medicine of the Escola Paulista de Medicina – Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Paulista School of Medicine - Federal University of São Paulo). The result of the research, although it shows only the opinion of medical students at a Brazilian university, indicates that Spirituality/Religiosity is already part of the contemporary medical universe.

Background: Ethical practice not only protects the rights of patients but is also a safeguard of medical practitioners. But, practicing medical ethics among the Bangladeshi health care professionals are not at a satisfactory level. Objectives: The study was aimed to assess the level of understanding regarding medical ethics among the health care professionals. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among registered 400 doctors of tertiary care hospitals and general practitioners in Dhaka City during June 2016 to January 2017. A non-probability sampling method was used for selecting the medical colleges, hospitals, institutions, medical university and general practitioners from the different areas of Dhaka city. A self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection assuring confidentiality and anonymity. Ethical approval was obtained from the National Research Ethics Committee (NREC) of Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) and from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the American University of Sovereign Nations (AUSN). The collected data were analysed through SPSS software, windows, version 21 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) and R programming language. Results: Of the 400 respondents, 68.0% were male. Mean (±SD) age of them was 30 (±6.5) years. About 93.0% respondents had only a MBBS degree and 65.0% were medical officers. About 38.0% respondents have below 5 years of clinical experience. Highest number of respondents got ethical information from book, second highest from lectures and then general text. About 32.0% respondents got ethical knowledge from one source. About 97.0% respondents agreed that medical ethics should be included in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical studies and 90.0% of them know only about theHippocratic Oath. Very few of them knew the Nuremberg Code (16.0%) and Helsinki Declaration (16.0%).Only 27.0% participants said that they never face any ethical problems in their clinical practice. About 75.0% reported that ethical practice is important in workplace. About 35.0% respondents have a very little knowledge and 46.0% have average knowledge on ethical law. Conclusion: Findings of the study indicate that ethical knowledge of the respondents is not satisfactory although they realise that it is important in clinical practice and should include both undergraduate and graduate medical studies. Also need to develop practice in the workplace by law and legislations according to the guidelines of Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BMDC) and Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA). The influence of medical students' knowledge concerning end-of-life care, considering ethical theories and clinical practice, remains controversial. We aimed to investigate medical students' knowledge of bioethical concepts related to moral kinds of death (euthanasia, disthanasia, and orthothanasia) and to analyze the influence of their clinical experience on practicing such approaches in a tertiary hospital in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We interviewed 180 medical students [distributed in Group 1 (G1) - first to third- year students, and Group 2 (G2) - fourth to sixth-year students] to evaluate the influence of the course on "medical ethics" on ethical theories and clinical practice, using a closed questionnaire. The course on "medical ethics" did not distinguish the groups (P=0.704) in relation to bioethical concepts. Neologisms such as "cacothanasia" and "idiothanasia" were incorrectly viewed as bioethical concepts by 28% of the interviewees. Moreover, 45.3% of the sample considered health care professionals incapable of managing terminally ill patients, especially G2 (29%) as compared to G1 (16.5%, P=0.031). The concept of euthanasia was accepted by 41% of sample, as compared to 98.2% for orthothanasia. Among medical students that accepted ways to abbreviate life (22.9%), 30.1% belonged to G1, and only 16.1% to G2 (P=0.049). These medical students were unfamiliar with common bioethical concepts. Moreover, they considered healthcare professionals incapable of managing terminally ill patients. The ethical ideal of the "good death" reflects better acceptance of orthothanasia by medical students, suggesting a tendency to apply it in their future clinical practice.

The European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) was founded in 1967 as a professional organisation for members working in genetics in clinical practice, research and education. The Society seeks the integration of scientific research and its implementation into clinical practice and the education of specialists and the public in all areas of medical and human genetics. The Society works to do this through many approaches, including educational sessions at the annual conference; training courses in general and specialist areas of genetics; an online resource of educational materials (EuroGEMS); and a mentorship scheme. The ESHG Education Committee is implementing new approaches to expand the reach of its educational activities and portfolio. With changes in technology, appreciation of the utility of genomics in healthcare and the public’s and patients’ increased awareness of the role of genomics, this review will summarise how the ESHG is adapting to deliver innovative educational activity.
