O objetivo deste trabalho é inventariar as espécies de serpentes encontradas na divisa entre os estados de São Paulo e Mato Grosso do Sul, nas proximidades do Rio Paraná, tendo como referência os municípios de Santa Fé do Sul (SP) e Aparecida do Taboado (MS) e incluindo os municípios adjacentes. Com o auxílio da comunidade, corpo de bombeiros e secretaria de saúde, foram coletados dados acerca da ocorrência de serpentes na região. Foram registrados, preliminarmente, um total de 11 gêneros, 12 espécies e 34 espécimes de serpentes distribuídas em quatro famílias (Boidae, Elapidae, Viperidae e Dipsadidae). No Noroeste de São Paulo, foram encontradas 10 espécies, 3 delas apenas encontradas no estado de São Paulo, enquanto que no Mato Grosso do Sul, 9 espécies, 2 delas apenas encontradas no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. As demais espécies foram encontradas em ambos os estados. Foi registrado que a ocorrência de Boa constrictor é notoriamente maior que a de outras espécies, sendo 60% mais alta que a segunda maior ocorrência a de Erytrolamprus Poecilogyrus. Sendo uma análise comparativa, não há uma grande diferença, do número total de espécies em ambos os estados de um estado para o outro. Em relação à área da saúde, os dados revelam que há maior quantidade de acidentes ofídicos na cidade de Paranaíba no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul.   INVENTORY OF SNAKES: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS AROUND PARANÁ RIVER BETWEEN THE NORTHWEST OF THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO AND EAST OF THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL   ABSTRACT This paper aims to inventory snakes species found in the border of both São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul States, around Paraná River, having as reference the municipalities of Santa Fé do Sul (SP) and Aparecida do Taboado (MS), including bordering municipalities. Data about snake’s incidence in that region was collected with the help of the community, Fire Brigade and Health Secretary. At first, it was reported, a total of 11 genres, 12 species, and 34 specimens of snakes distributed in four families (Boidae, Elapidae, Viperidae and Dipsadidae). In São Paulo northeast 10 species were found, 3 of them were only found in São Paulo, whereas in Mato Grosso do Sul, 19 species, 2 of them were found in Mato Grosso do Sul. All the other species were found in both States. It was recorded that the incidence of Boa constrictor is notoriously higher than the incidence of other species, being 60% higher than the second one for Erytrolamprus Poecilogyrus. It is a comparative analysis, thus there is not a big difference in the total number of species for both States. Regarding health issues, the data presented a higher quantity of ophidian accidents in the city of Paranaíba in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul.   Keywords: Inventory of Snakes. São Paulo-SP. This study with beetroot seedlings, cultivar Top Tall Early Wonder, was carried out at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS/Aquidauana), from October to November 2008. Three environments of cultivation were used: greenhouse; nursery with monofilament screen of 50 % of shading; and nursery with aluminized thermal reflective screen of 50% of shading. In these environments, three polystyrene trays of 72, 128 and 200 cells, filled with four substrates, were tested: soil; Plantmax®; coconut fiber and vermiculite. There were no replication environments and then each one was considered an experiment alone. For each environment, it was adopted a completely randomized design in factorial scheme 3x4 (three trays x four substrates), with four replications, performing individual analysis of variance and joint analysis of experiments for environment comparisons. The monofilament screen is the best environment for seedlings produced in tray of 72 cells, and the greenhouse was the best environment for seedlings produced in trays of 128 cells. The best seedlings were formed in the tray of 72 cells. Vermiculite was the best substrate.

The movement of people between places is far from being a new or isolated phenomenon and is happening more often than before. This is also the case for individuals who moved from Brazil and Paraguay. Based on the existing literature as well as on data gathered in the landless camp Antônio Irmão, also known locally as the ‘Brasiguaios landless camp’ in Itaquiraí in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, this article explains how their search for a piece of land in either Brazil and Paraguay influenced the formation of the Brasiguaios identities. First, I briefly approach the foundation of transnationalism scholarship, which guided my research. Next, I demonstrate how land policies in Brazil and Paraguay, aimed at developing their respective border regions, played a role in the migration of Brazilians to Paraguayan and then the return of a number of them to Brazil. Last, I share the narrative of individuals in the Brasiguaio landless camp in the pursuit of land in either country. At the core of my argument is that the Brasiguaio identities of this landless group result from their pursuit of land rather than from migration processes.

Phytophagous mites belonging to the family Tetranychidae are considered pests of a wide range of plant species of agricultural importance in the Annonaceae family. This study aimed to reports the occurrence and attack symptoms of the mite Tetranychus mexicanus (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) on soursop seedlings (Anonna muricata L.). High mite infestation on the leaves of soursop seedlings was reported in a seedling production nursery made of black Sombrite® screen with 35% restriction of full daylight, located at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS), in Cassilândia, MS, Brazil, during the month of October 2015. Attack symptoms were on the adaxial side of the leaves, whereas mite colonies were located on the abaxial face of the leaves. The injuries started by yellowing of the leaves and curled edges, and later by the fall of the attacked leaves. This is the first record of the occurrence of T. mexicanus in soursop seedlings produced on agricultural screenhousein the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Abstract—A synopsis of Dicliptera (Acanthaceae) for Brazil is presented. Six species are recognized: Dicliptera ciliaris, D. sexangularis, and D. squarrosa, widely distributed in South America; D. purpurascens, which ranges from the North Region of Brazil (in the state of Acre) to eastern Bolivia; D. gracilirama, a new species from the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil; and D. granchaquenha, a new species recorded in dry and semideciduous forests in Bolivia and western Brazil, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Furthermore, we propose new synonyms and designate lectotypes for eleven names. An identification key to the six accepted Dicliptera species in Brazil is provided.

The menaced and poorly-known waters of the Bodoquena Plateau revealed a new resident, the stunning Hypostomus froehlichi sp. n., a large-sized armored catfish, which is finally described after more than twenty years since its discovery. The Bodoquena Plateau is drained by the rio Paraguay basin, and is located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The new species differs from its congeners on the Bodoquena crystalline waters by having teeth with morphological and numerical variation in adult specimens. There is a continuous range of specimens having about 20 thick and worn teeth to specimens having about 50 thin teeth with intact crowns and lanceolate main cusps. Additional diagnostic characters are: dentaries angled more than 90 degrees, dark blotches, one plate bordering supraoccipital, moderate keel along dorsal series of plates, usually two rows of blotches per interradial membrane on dorsal, pectoral and ventral fins, and by attaining comparatively large size. Hypostomus froehlichi seems to be endemic to the area of the Bodoquena Plateau, in rivers draining to the rio Miranda. The description of the new species reveals a potential conservation flagship species as it is one of the most seen and documented fish by visitors and divers in the clear waters from the touristic, though menaced, Bonito region in Brazil.

ABSTRACT We described infracommunities, prevalence and mean intensity of infestation of ecotoparasite flies (Nycteribiidae and Streblidae) on bats in an ecotone area of Cerrado as predominant vegetation, with influence of Atlantic Forest, in the southeast of Mato Grosso do Sul. In 36 sampling nights between April 2015 and August 2016 (23,328 m².h), we captured 17 bat species, of which ten were infested, and 14 species of fly. The most abundant bats were the phyllostomids Artibeus planirostris (Spix, 1823), Glossophaga soricina (Pallas, 1776) and Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) and the most abundant flies were the streblids Trichobius longipes (Rudow, 1871), T. joblingi Wenzel, 1966 and Megistopoda aranea (Coquillett, 1899). Phyllostomus hastatus (Pallas, 1767) was the bat species that presented the highest infestation rate. Platyrrhinus lineatus (É. Geoffroy, 1810) and Desmodus rotundus (É. Geoffroy, 1810) were not infested. Besides that, the frequency of bats that were infested by a single species of fly was higher than the frequency of bats infested for two or more, and it may be a pattern.

The incidence of Candida bloodstream infection has increased over the past years. In the Center-West region of Brazil, data on candidemia are scarce. This paper reports a retrospective analysis of 96 cases of Candida bloodstream infection at a Brazilian tertiary-care teaching hospital in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, from January 1998 to December 2006. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were collected from medical records and from the hospital's laboratory database. Patients' ages ranged from three days to 92 years, with 53 (55.2%) adults and 43 (44.8%) children. Of the latter, 25 (58.1%) were newborns. The risk conditions most often found were: long period of hospitalization, utilization of venous central catheter, and previous use of antibiotics. Fifty-eight (60.4%) patients died during the hospitalization period and eight (13.7%) of them died 30 days after the diagnosis of candidemia. Candida albicans (45.8%) was the most prevalent species, followed by C. parapsilosis (34.4%), C. tropicalis (14.6%) and C. glabrata (5.2%). This is the first report of Candida bloodstream infection in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and it highlights the importance of considering the possibility of invasive Candida infection in patients exposed to risk factors, particularly among neonates and the elderly.
