The aim of the paper is to give the insight into international business and management in pandemic-related conditions in the first half of 2020. The subject of the paper is the analysis of the impact of the initial pandemic wave on the conditions in which international business and management take place and the risks to which companies are exposed, the ways they react to these conditions regarding the business ventures they give up or undertake, as well as the possibilities of how to cope with the current pandemic conditions. Therefore, the paper consists of three parts which analyze each of these aspects. In the pandemic-related conditions, full of unknowns and declining trends of almost all economic indicators, managers have a significant and additional responsibility to consider all relevant aspects and act accordingly making possibilities to mitigate the effects of a pandemic and to get through it.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic review of the extant empirical body of knowledge regarding the impact of Guanxi on international Business-to-Business (B-to-B) relationships. Design/methodology/approach After the collection and refinement of studies that appeared in marketing, business and management literature during 1995-2018 period, a systematic review was conducted to discover the current situation and future research directions on the subject. Findings Theoretically, vast majority of the reviewed studies lacked a theoretical foundation, with the remainder anchored primarily on the resource-based view, social network theory and social exchange theory. Methodologically, Ganqing, Xinren and Mianzi are the most frequently investigated dimensions, whereas Renqing is the least investigated dimension. Data are mostly obtained from both Chinese and Western counterparts through survey and analyzed through univariate and multivariate data analysis techniques. Empirically, extant research focused on many diverse outcomes including trust, financial performance, cooperation, satisfaction, time orientation, opportunism and liability of foreignness, while under-examining the drives of Guanxi. Research limitations/implications This study provides a synthesis of extant line of research on the subject that are published in peer-reviewed international journals, which publish research in English. A meta-analysis may be conducted for providing a further detailed framework. Originality/value This study contributes to international marketing literature by providing an in-depth and synthesized inventory of knowledge to scholars; deriving a comprehensive analysis of theoretical foundations, methodological approaches and findings addressed by scholars in the field; noticing theoretical, methodological and empirical gaps to be examined; and providing future research directions.

While there are numerous investigations of the impact of English on Spanish vocabulary, the opposite direction of lexical borrowing has as yet received fairly little attention. Spanish-derived words and meanings which have been taken over into English in the last few decades have been relatively neglected. The present article gives essential insight into the influence of Spanish on the English lexicon since 1901. I assign the different twentieth and twenty-first century Spanish borrowings to various lexical domains in order to offer an overview of the subject areas and fields of life to which Spanish has added new words and senses in recent times.

It is perceived that Outreach activities are primarily conducted to raise the profile of the department and the subject with a view to recruitment. However, we highlight a range of benefits to teaching practice and assessment of practical teaching at tertiary level that can arise from such activities. In particular, engaging with secondary school teachers can provide invaluable insight into successful teaching and learning strategies in particular for first year undergraduates.

Purpose – Latin America has been neglected in management and international business (IB) knowledge for a long time. Such a picture reflects the enduring power of the dark side of the geopolitics of knowledge that “international” sub-fields in management knowledge have to tackle as a key condition of possibility for the co-creation of a truly “international” field of “international business”. In this position paper, the authors aim to analyze the extent to which CPoIB has been a key instrument to tackle Anglo-Saxon hegemony in IB knowledge over the last ten years. Design/methodology/approach – The authors follow a decolonizing perspective to analyse the impact of CPoIB for Latin America international business knowledge production. Findings – The paper argues that CPoIB has given voice to authors who are from Latin America and, most important, work in the region. By doing that, CPoIB has triggered the mobilization of mechanisms of recognition and redistribution that are necessary to offset the neo-imperial side of “international business” and management knowledge. The journal has also helped to foster the co-creation of “pluriversal international business”. Originality/value – The paper uses a decolonial perspective from Latin America in order to open new questions and challenges to the field of IB.

While the empirical literature on foreign military intervention has made considerable progress identifying the causes and consequences of military intervention, we still have much to learn about the subject. Mixed and even contradictory results remain common in the literature, and cumulative knowledge has in many instances proven elusive. Arguably the two most prominent theoretical approaches in recent scholarship, the bargaining model and the rivalry approach, have provided important insight into the phenomenon. They would nonetheless benefit from further refinement. Common explanatory variables outside of these two approaches also require further theoretical and empirical development. The literature has recently begun to examine the impact that military intervention has on target societies as well, with particular attention being given to target state democratization, human rights development, and conflict resolution. Empirical research could shed additional light on all of these phenomena by developing more detailed theory and data on intervention targets. It would also profit from incorporating systematic knowledge on leaders’ proclivities to use military force into current theoretical models.

The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence is universal regardless of the treatment modality applied, and secondary prevention is still an unmet issue even though the elimination of hepatitis C (HCV) with direct antiviral agents (DAAs) was expected to be one of the new options. Unfortunately, the impact of DAAs on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development (de novo and recurrence) is still controversial. Since the first publication on the subject in 2016, almost all groups worldwide have carried out research in this field with hundreds of publications now available. This revision is focused on the impact of DAAs on HCC recurrence and aims to discuss the potential underlying mechanisms and host factors pointing out the time association phenomenon between DAA treatment and HCC recurrence. Moreover, we comment on the methodological issues that could affect the different interpretations of the published results. In conclusion, this is an area of research with potential in the understanding of the impact of factors not previously considered, and may also help change hepatocarcinogenesis tenets, such as the belief that the elimination of HCV should be used as a second prevention treatment.

Is there room on the shelf for another book about Jalal al-Din Rumi, thethirteenth-century mystic of Persia? Considering the great depth of hisgenius, the answer has to be yes. Sefik Can’s Fundamentals of Rumi’sThought is one of the latest books on the subject, and is distinguished fromothers in that its author is the current head of the Mevlevi order, the Sufiorder established after Rumi’s death and based on his teachings. In his biography, the author is introduced as “the most authoritative spiritual figure ofthe Order” and “the latest living Mesnevihan (Mesnevi reciter) whoreceived his ijazah (special certificate in the recitation of the Mesnevi) fromhis spiritual master Tahir al-Mevlevi.”This book thus reflects the Mevlevi tradition as it is understood withinits Turkish milieu today. Neatly organized into four chapters, it deals withthe political and historical background of Anatolia during Rumi’s lifetime(chapter 1), “Rumi’s Personality and Views” (chapter 2), his influence(chapter 3), and “Rumi’s Sufi Order and His Approach to Orders” (chapter4). A short bibliography and an index are also provided.Throughout many passages, one can feel the author’s love and compassionfor Rumi. His sincerity and enthusiasm compel one to set aside academicconcerns over historical accuracy and critical analysis in order to viewRumi from a Mevlevi perspective. The book offers insight into a livingdevotional approach to Rumi that often translates into an uplifting joy, whichis the hallmark of Rumi’s poems and which has animated the life of manyof his devotees. The reader will benefit from the relevant spiritual insightsoffered. The section entitled “Beauty” is a good example of explainingRumi’s views and relating them to contemporary experiences. The authorwrites:According to Rumi, beauty takes us from ourselves, frees us from theprison of the body, and brings us closer to another realm, to God. Thus wefind God within the impact of the fine arts on sensitive people. (p. 191)The heart of this book is chapter 2, which features the author’s interpretationsof Rumi’s personality and views (pp. 97-246). Although a small portionof this chapter is devoted to Rumi’s life and characteristics, most of it ...

The narrative dealing with the official founding of Ava as recorded by both the Old Burmese inscriptions and later Burmese chronicles is the subject of this chapter. Practical, strategic, and military concerns, especially the impact of the Syam (Shan) raids, were paramount in choosing the site on which Ava stood. Thadominbya and Minkyiswa Sawkai were the two kings responsible for the founding and establishment of the new dynasty and kingdom. Without them, and ministers such as Minyaza, the period of dis-integration that followed Pagan’s decline would surely have not abated, but perhaps continued well into the third quarter of the fourteenth century, making re-integration that much more difficult. Original and contemporary epigraphic evidence is used to supplement the chronicle narrative in this reconstruction of Ava’s founding, not only providing viability to the account, but also allowing the reader to gain some insight into the nature of the indigenous chronicles and their perspective on the factors responsible for the establishment of Ava.

The colonial conquest of Palu and Kulawi Valley in western Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, is characterised by the so-called "ethical policy", which was introduced to Dutch colonial policy at the beginning of the 20th century. An in-depth analysis of Dutch colonial sources, the memories van overgave , which have never been analysed in such detail on the subject of cultural geography, reveals that almost all facets of cultural landscape were influenced by the Dutch rule. These sources also disclose the ambiguous use of ethical policy by justifying or withdrawing colonial intervention in this area.
