The submarine propeller works in the submarine wake with severe circumferential nonuniformity, which causes the hydrodynamic force to act on the blade. This results in severe oscillation with the rotation of the propeller and impairs the hydrodynamics and noise performance of the submarine propeller. The horseshoe vortex generated at the hull-appendages junctions of the submarine has important influence on wake uniformity. In the present study, the state of the submarine horseshoe vortex is analyzed and a new method of vortex control baffler is presented. The aim is to weaken the horseshoe vortex. Based on the wind tunnel experiment and numerical simulation on the submarine model, the vortex control baffler can decrease the strength of the submarine horseshoe vortex and improve the uniformity of the submarine wake. Vortex control bafflers adapted for the fully appended SUBOFF model are designed, and the unsteady force of three kinds of propellers functioned after the SUBOFF model is calculated numerically. The results show that although the skew angle and blade number are different, the amplitudes of the unsteady force acting on the blades of all three propellers decreased by 50% to 80% due to the effects of the vortex control baffler.

Large eddy simulation of turbulent flow around smooth and rough hemispherical domes was conducted. The roughness of the rough dome was generated by a special approach using quadrilateral solid blocks placed alternately on the dome surface. It was shown that this approach is capable of generating the roughness effect with a relative success. The subgrid-scale model based on the transport of the subgrid turbulent kinetic energy was used to account for the small scales effect not resolved by large eddy simulation. The turbulent flow was simulated at a subcritical Reynolds number based on the approach free stream velocity, air properties, and dome diameter of 1.4 × 105. Profiles of mean pressure coefficient, mean velocity, and its root mean square were predicted with good accuracy. The comparison between the two domes showed different flow behavior around them. A flattened horseshoe vortex was observed to develop around the rough dome at larger distance compared with the smooth dome. The separation phenomenon occurs before the apex of the rough dome while for the smooth dome it is shifted forward. The turbulence-affected region in the wake was larger for the rough dome.

Low aspect ratio vanes, often the result of overall engine architecture constraints, create strong secondary flows and high endwall loss. In this paper, a splitter concept is demonstrated that reduces secondary flow strength and improves stage performance. An analytic conceptual study, corroborated by inviscid computations, shows that the total secondary kinetic energy of the secondary flow vortices is reduced when the number of passages is increased and, for a given number of vanes, when the inlet endwall boundary layer is evenly distributed between the passages. Viscous computations show that, for this to be achieved in a splitter configuration, the pressure-side leg of the low aspect ratio vane horseshoe vortex, must enter the adjacent passage (and not “jump” in front of the splitter leading edge). For a target turbine application, four vane designs were produced using a multi-objective optimization approach. These designs represent: current practice for a low aspect ratio vane; a design exempt from thickness constraints; and two designs incorporating splitter vanes. Each geometry is tested experimentally, as a sector, within a low-speed turbine stage. The vane designs with splitters geometries were found to reduce the measured secondary kinetic energy, by up to 85%, to a value similar to the design exempt from thickness constraints. The resulting flowfield was also more uniform in both the circumferential and radial directions. One splitter design was selected for a full annulus test where a mixed-out loss reduction, compared to the current practice design, of 15.3% was measured and the stage efficiency increased by 0.88%.

Abstract The present paper describes the genesis of a horseshoe vortex in the symmetry plane in front of a juncture. In contrast to a previous topological investigation, the presence of the obstacle is no longer physically modelled. Instead, the pressure gradient, induced by the obstacle, has been used to represent its influence. Consequently, the results of this investigation can be applied to any symmetrical flow above a flat plate. The genesis of the vortical structure is analysed by using the theory of nonlinear differential equations and the bifurcation theory. In particular, the genesis of a horseshoe vortex can be described by the unfolding of the degenerate singularity resulting from a Jordan Normal Form with three vanishing eigenvalues and one linear term which is related to the adverse pressure gradient. The examination of this nonlinear dynamical system reveals that a horseshoe vortex emanates from a non-separating flow through two subsequent saddle-node bifurcations in different directions and the transition of a node into a focus located in the flow field.

The usefulness of three-dimensional flow calculations has frequently been obscured by the numerical mixing present in the calculation methods. This paper describes a new method of forming the finite difference momentum equations. The new method results in well posed equations which introduce no numerical mixing. It may be used with orthogonal or non-orthogonal grids and with uniform or highly non-uniform grid spacing. The method is demonstrated by comparing it with upwind differencing on the calculation of a simple example. It is then used in an elliptic pressure-correction calculation procedure to calculate a leading edge horseshoe vortex about a Rankine half body. The results compare well with the experimental data presented in a companion paper.

With the desire for increased power output for a gas turbine engine comes the continual push to achieve higher turbine inlet temperatures. Higher temperatures result in large thermal and mechanical stresses particularly along the nozzle guide vane. One critical region along a vane is the leading edge-endwall juncture. Based on the assumption that the approaching flow to this juncture is similar to a two-dimensional boundary layer, previous studies have shown that a horseshoe vortex forms. This vortex forms because of a radial total pressure gradient from the approaching boundary layer. This paper documents the computational design and experimental validation of a fillet placed at the leading edge-endwall juncture of a guide vane to eliminate the horseshoe vortex. The fillet design effectively accelerated the incoming boundary layer thereby mitigating the effect of the total pressure gradient. To verify the CFD studies used to design the leading edge fillet, flow field measurements were performed in a large-scale, linear, vane cascade. The flow field measurements were performed with a laser Doppler velocimeter in four planes orientated orthogonal to the vane. Good agreement between the CFD predictions and the experimental measurements verified the effectiveness of the leading edge fillet at eliminating the horseshoe vortex. The flowfield results showed that the turbulent kinetic energy levels were significantly reduced in the endwall region because of the absence of the unsteady horseshoe vortex.

The unsteady inviscid force on cylinders and spheres in subcritical compressible flow is investigated. In the limit of incompressible flow, the unsteady inviscid force on a cylinder or sphere is the so-called added-mass force that is proportional to the product of the mass displaced by the body and the instantaneous acceleration. In compressible flow, the finite acoustic propagation speed means that the unsteady inviscid force arising from an instantaneously applied constant acceleration develops gradually and reaches steady values only for non-dimensional times c ∞ t / R ≳10, where c ∞ is the freestream speed of sound and R is the radius of the cylinder or sphere. In this limit, an effective added-mass coefficient may be defined. The main conclusion of our study is that the freestream Mach number has a pronounced effect on both the peak value of the unsteady force and the effective added-mass coefficient. At a freestream Mach number of 0.5, the effective added-mass coefficient is about twice as large as the incompressible value for the sphere. Coupled with an impulsive acceleration, the unsteady inviscid force in compressible flow can be more than four times larger than that predicted from incompressible theory. Furthermore, the effect of the ratio of specific heats on the unsteady force becomes more pronounced as the Mach number increases.

A new type of collar, the hooked-collar, was studied through experiments and numerical methods. Tests were conducted using a hooked collar of a width of 1.25b and a height of 0.25b, where b is the bridge-pier width. The hooked-collar efficiency was evaluated by testing different hooked-collar placements within the bridge-pier, which were compared to the bridge-pier without any collar. A double hooked-collar configuration, one placed at the bed level and the other buried 0.25b, was the most efficient at reducing the scour hole. In other cases, a hooked-collar positioned 0.25b above the bed slightly reduced the scour hole and had similar scour patterns when compared to the pier without the hooked-collar. The flow fields along the vertical symmetrical plane in the experiments are also presented. Laboratory experiments and numerical tests show that maximal downflow is highly reduced along with a corresponding decrease in horseshoe vortex strength for the experiments with the hooked-collar, compared to cases without the hooked-collar. The flow fields reveal that the maximum turbulent kinetic energy decreases with the installation of the hooked-collar.
