Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine relationships between academic achievement, clinical competence, and confidence in the clinical performance of nursing students, and to identify factors that influence them. Methods: This was a descriptive correlation study. Data were collected from 118 nursing students at a nursing college in Seoul. One-way variance analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to examine relationships between academic achievement, clinical competence, and confidence in clinical performance. Results: Clinical competence was related to academic achievement in students’ previous semester and to students’ academic scores in a fundamental of nursing course. Clinical competence showed a weak positive correlation with academic achievement in students’ previous semester and academic scores in a fundamental of nursing course in both evaluations by the professor and students’ self-evaluations. However, confidence in clinical performance had no significant correlation with academic achievement. The factor affecting the clinical competence was academic scores in a fundamental of nursing course, and factors affecting confidence in clinical performance were health status, personality, major suitability, and class satisfaction in a fundamental of nursing skills course. Conclusion: These findings indicate that students with high academic achievement have better clinical performance, but confidence in clinical performance is not related to academic achievement.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand technical nursing students' meaning of interacting with family members of hospitalized children. Method: Symbolic Interactionism was used as the theoretical framework and Qualitative Content Analysis was the methodological procedure. A total of eight graduates from an institution situated in the city of Osasco, Sao Paulo state, participated in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Results: A total of five representative themes were revealed: Dealing with difficult situations with family members; Perceiving oneself to be unprepared to interact with family members; Family members being a helpful tool; Developing strategies to obtain a good interaction with family members; and Teachers being facilitators of the interaction with family members. Final considerations: To be acquainted with this experience has led to the understanding of the need to include the theme of family care in the curriculum of the Technical Nursing Course. Additionally, the present study contributed to reflections on the importance of such knowledge for this population and to the development of future studies, as this theme has been scarcely explored in the literature.

Data was collected using the WHOQOL-brief questionnaire and the form with complementary variables. In the bivariate analysis, the Student's t test and Pearson's correlation were used. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to verify factors associated with quality of life scores (p <0.05). Results: the study was composed by 165 students. In the social domain, the best average rating was evidenced and the worst one was the environment domain. Students were willing to drop out of the course with a lower average quality of life score in all domains, and those who reported difficulty in maintaining the course for financial reasons had lower scores in the physical (p = 0.024) and environmental domains. (p <0.001). Conclusion: the worst quality of life was assessed among students with weaknesses in social and financial support networks, which may impact school performance and the risk of dropout.
