The main themes are two main health problems affecting children under five in Indonesia, namely nutrition and oral health. Lack of nutrition in children can also affect their general health, and so does their oral health, leading to their quality of life. The study aimed to analyse the relationship between maternal oral health knowledge, maternal age group, social-economic status with the oral health-related of life in stunting children. This type of analytical research used a survey method on 86 mothers aged 2-5 years in one of 15 villages designated by the mayor of Bandung as a stunting locus. Maternal oral health knowledge, social-economic status, and oral health-related quality of life were assessed using a set of questionnaires that have been pre-tested to non-participant mothers. The hypotheses of the conceptual model were tested using structural equation modelling-partial least squares. The results showed that 16.7% of the variance in OHRQoL was explained by maternal oral health knowledge and the maternal age group. Social-economic status has an indirect relationship to OHRQoL by predicting the maternal oral health knowledge 10.6%. The path coefficient between maternal age group and OHRQoL was the strongest (b = -0.350, P = 0.000), followed by SES and maternal oral health knowledge (b = 0.325, P = 0.04) and to OHRQoL (b = 0.215, P=0.02). The overall predictive power of the model was 10.6%. This result indicated maternal oral health knowledge, social-economic status, and maternal age group related to children's oral health quality of life.

Abstract Background Oral care is acknowledged as an integral component of general health and plays an essential role in establishing the desired level of quality of life for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Purpose To investigate oral health knowledge and dental behaviors in individuals with ASD in comparison with individuals without ASD in Jordan. Methods A case–control study was carried out among 296 caregivers of individuals with ASD (n = 147) and control (n = 149) groups. A closed ended, validated self-designed questionnaire was distributed. The questionnaire included questions addressing participant’s oral health knowledge and behaviour. Data were analyzed using SPSS® software Version 22 with a 0.05 level of significance. A Chi-square test and contingency-table analysis were performed. Results Individuals with ASD in Jordan were significantly less knowledgeable about different oral health aspects than individuals without ASD (p < 0.05). Fewer individuals in the ASD group brushed their teeth once or twice daily (89%), compared to the control group (93%). Only 15% of the ASD participants could brush their teeth without help. The use of fluoridated toothpaste and the frequency of using mouth rinse demonstrated a significant difference between groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion ASD individuals in Jordan suffer from a significant lack of oral knowledge comparing to their controls, leading to a misunderstanding of the basic and highly important dental health aspects. Indicating that the knowledge was not enough to influence their dental behaviors. Children with ASD and their families should receive appropriate education in special need oral health care given by oral health professionals to reduce the risk of having dental problems and oral disease and enhance their quality of life.

The oral health of older adults is an important factor affecting their overall health and quality of life. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of oral health of older adults living at home in rural areas and investigate factors affecting oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), especially oral dryness and oral health knowledge and behavior. A descriptive correlational study was conducted. In total, 117 participants were included in the final analysis. Data were collected using questionnaires for oral dryness, oral health knowledge and behavior, and OHRQoL. In addition, oral dryness was measured by mechanical measurements. Oral health knowledge was positively correlated with oral health behavior (r = 0.18, p = 0.029) and OHRQoL (r = 0.25, p = 0.003). In addition, a positive correlation between oral health behavior and OHRQoL (r = 0.24, p = 0.005) was observed. Multiple regression analysis revealed that subjective oral dryness (β = −4.99, p = 0.001) had a significant effect on OHRQoL. To improve OHRQoL in the rural elderly, health providers should pay attention to oral dryness and comprehensively evaluate it. The development of prevention programs and continuous education that can improve oral health knowledge and behavior is also required.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the profile of a sample of octogenarians (n=80) attended at the municipal health network of a city in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil; evaluate their perception regarding quality of life dimensions (QoL); identify correlations between socio economic status, education level and QoL. It is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative analysis of data. The results revealed that this population is predominantly female, widowed, illiterate, sedentary and poor, who need health services and leisure opportunities, and whose main support is religion. The socio economic status did not interfere in the QoL perception, though, higher education and participation in physical activities result in higher satisfaction.

Dental and oral health problems are quite high (> 35%), namely South Kalimantan. One of the health professionals who can improve dental and oral health knowledge is usually done by counseling. The method used is a didactic method only active educators and the socratic method of educators and students being active and creative. This study aims to determine the differences in counseling of fairy tales methods and monopoly games on knowledge of tooth brushing in the 9-10 year age group in SDN 1 Palam Banjarbaru. This type of research is analytical. This research design is quasi-experimental. This study was a pretest-posttest design. The number of samples is 71 respondents using total sampling or saturated sampling techniques. The results of this study indicate that the use of fairy tale methods and monopoly game methods can both increase the knowledge of brushing teeth, but the average extension knowledge using the monopoly game method is higher than the fairy tale method, it can be seen from the magnitude of the average knowledge of brushing before counseling ( 10.25), after counseling (12.33) and the average difference (2.08) using the monopoly game method. Compared to the average value of tooth brushing knowledge before counseling (10.26), after counseling (11.49) and the average difference (1.23) using a fairy tale method.The conclusion is that there are differences in the extension of fairy tale methods and the monopoly game method of knowledge of brushing teeth in the 9-10 year age group at SDN 1 Palam Banjarbaru.

Poor oral health affects quality of life and daily functioning in the general population and especially in patients with mental health disorders. Due to the high burden of oral health-related quality of life in patients with a mental health disorder, it is important for nurses to know how they can intervene in an early phase. The aim of this systematic scoping review was to identify and appraise oral health interventions in patients with a mental health disorder. A systematic scoping review with a critical appraisal of the literature was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and their checklists. MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and reference lists were searched from their inception until December 2020. Results: Eleven quantitative studies were included in the review: four randomized controlled trials, six quasi-experimental studies and one cohort study. Studies focused on interventions for patients (n = 8) or focused on patients together with their professionals (n = 3). Four types of oral health interventions in mental health were found: (I) educational interventions; (II) physical interventions; (III) interventions combining behavioural and educational elements and (IV) interventions combining educational and physical elements. All studies (n = 11) had an evaluation period ≤12 months. Nine studies showed an effect on the short term (≤12 months) with regard to oral health knowledge, oral health behaviour, or physical oral health outcomes (e.g., plaque index). Two studies showed no effects on any outcome. Overall, the methodological insufficient to good. Conclusion: Four types of interventions with positive effects (≤12 months) on oral health knowledge, oral health behaviour, and physical oral health outcomes in different diagnostic patient groups were found. Due to the heterogeneity in both interventions, diagnostic groups and outcomes, one golden standard oral health intervention cannot be advised yet, although the methodological quality of studies seems sufficient. Developing an integrated oral health toolkit might be of great importance in mental health considering its potential effect on oral health-related quality of life.
