Abstract Carboniferous sedimentation in the southern Gaspé Peninsula has fossilized a paleosurface which is now gradually being exhumed by erosion. Part of the surface was horizontally cut by a major peneplanation event that took place between 290 Ma (Permian) and 200 Ma (Jurassic). Exhumation of the surface below the peneplanation line must also have started by Jurassic time in response to the en bloc uplift of the evolving Atlantic Ocean's passive margins. Some geomorphic features of the exhumed paleosurface bring clues regarding Carboniferous paleoenvironments and tectonics. A planation surface limited by a scarp, which is leading to a higher planation surface occupied by the same rock formations, is here interpreted as a paleo- wave-cut platform (associated to the Windsor transgression) for it cannot be explained by differential erosion, fault movement or "etchplanation". A series of fault scarps cutting through planation surfaces are interpreted as being the result of post-Acadian fault activity. The preservation of limestone hogbacks on the exhumed paleosurface, which are interpreted as having evolved under an arid climate, is believed to be either related to a pre-Windsor clastic fossilization or to post-Windsor lateral displacement. The tightly embanked river system, which is still currently dissecting the Peninsula's main planation surface, and the karstic systems of both that surface and the exhumed paleosurface, are interpreted as having evolved since Jurassic Time, except for a few cases of river antecedence in the north-central highlands which are interpreted as representing even older river routes.

Turbidites, belonging to the β1, member, Cloridorme Formation, are exposed on the north shore of the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec. Their structural attitude is such that vertical sections through turbidite beds are exposed on the wave-cut platform and their strike is approximately parallel to the paleocurrent direction, as shown by sole marks on the bases of beds.Certain thick turbidite beds, in a distal position, display a sequence of sedimentary structures which differs from the sequence defined by Bouma. Three broad divisions are recognized: a basal division consists of either limestone or quartz granule to pebble conglomerate (0–4 cm thick) or coarse sand graywacke or calcareous wacke (0–15 cm thick). Basal divisions of calcareous wacke frequently display ripple-lamination, parallel lamination, or upstream-inclined laminae. Where the upstream inclined laminae form a single set, they occur below a sinuous profile (wavelength 40–80 cm, and amplitude 2–5 cm).A second division (0–330 cm thick) consists in most places of spindle- or globular-shaped calcareous nodules scattered in an argillaceous host. In some beds, streaking and lobing of light colored, carbonate bearing material is associated with these nodules. Internal hemi-ellipsoid structures, arranged en echelon and convex towards the base of the bed, are displayed from the second division. The upper division consists of fine grained siltstone and shale.The upstream-inclined laminae in the basal division of calcareous wacke beds are interpreted as being the result of the upstream migration of antidunes. The nodules within the second division developed as 'pseudo-nodules'. The hemi-ellipsoid structures resemble damped, large scale (macroturbulent) eddies associated with the flow of dense grain dispersions.Correlation of these beds has been achieved over a distance of 12 km. Basal divisions of granule and pebble conglomerate persist over this distance and show that coarse particles may be transported by turbidity currents over long distances. The sedimentary structures of the basal divisions of several calcareous wacke beds might be interpreted as the result of either an increase in flow regime downcurrent, or of nonpreservation of structures at up-current localities.The beds were probably deposited from turbidity currents composed largely of mud and fine sand, but containing a zone of coarse grains concentrated near the bed. The basal division was deposited from this lower zone and a period of traction formed rippled, flat, or antidune bed forms. Stratification in the basal division was preserved by the rapid deposition on top of sediment that settled en masse from the subsequent high concentration body of the current. The formation of a succession of 'quick' beds led to the sedimentation of the second division. The flows responsible for the sequence of structures observed and the downcurrent persistence of the beds probably approached closely a state of 'autosuspension'.

An outbreak of the European spruce sawfly, Diprion hercyniae (Htg.), was discovered in the Gaspé Peninsula in 1930. By 1938, heavy infestations had developed west of the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, throughout New Brunswick and northern Maine, and in parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. Moderate to light infestations occurred through all other parts of the spruce forests of this region and extended from Nova Scotia, to the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, and west to Ontario.

ABSTRAKKegiatan karakterisasi material bawah permukaan penyusun pondasi tapak merupakan bagian dari studi tapak instalasi nuklir. Karakterisasi dilakukan dengan berbagai metode, diantaranya pemahaman tentang sistem pengendapan formasi batuan. Sebagai bagian dari metode interpretasi lingkungan pengendapan, analisis pemodelan fasies berdasarkan elektrofasies memberikan informasi yang cepat mengenai sistem pengendapan suatu formasi batuan. Metodologi yang digunakan adalah dengan interpretrasi log sinar gamma (log GR) menggunakan korelasi relatif antara variasi bentuk log dan fasies sedimentasi. Berdasarkan analisis diketahui Formasi Bojongmanik terbentuk pada lingkungan marine-lagoonal dengan pengaruh gelombang sangat rendah. Log GR yang menunjukan bentuk funnel, bergerigi dan simetris, mengindikasikan fasies shoreface, lagoon, dan tidal point bar. Arah sedimentasi, cekungan, dan suplai pada pengendapan sedimen Formasi Bojongmanik diinterpretasikan relatif ke utara. Formasi Serpong diendapkan pada sistem sungai bermeander dan tersusun atas endapan point bar, crevasse splay dan floodplain. Hasil analisis ini diharapkan dapat menjadi panduan dalam analisis lanjutan terkait karakterisasi material pondasi. ABSTRACTThe activity of subsurface material composing site foundation characterization is part of nuclear installation siting study. Characterization conducted by several methods, such as understanding the depositional environment of rock formations. As a segment of depositional environment interpretation method, facies model analysis based on electrofacies provides quicker information on depositional system of rock formation. Methodology applied is gamma ray log (log GR) interpretation using relative correlation between log shape variation and sedimentation facies. Based on the analysis, Bojongmanik Formation was deposited on marine-lagoonal environment with very low wave influence. Log GR that shows shape of funnel, serrated, and symmetry, indicate shoreface, lagoon, and tidal point bar facies. The direction of sedimentation, basin, and supply of Bojongmanik Formation interpreted relatively to the north. Serpong Formation deposited on meandering river system, and composed of point bar deposit, crevasse splay, and floodplain deposit. The result of analysis is expected to be guidance in further analysis related to the characterization of foundation materials.

Geochemical signatures, erratic dispersal, and striae indicate glacial flows in the north-central Gaspé Peninsula exclusively from Appalachian sources, except for the coastal fringe. During the last glacial maximum (LGM), ice from the Monts McGerrigle flowed northward and northwestward over the summits of the eastern Chic-Chocs Range and the coastal plateau to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Lesser flows also occurred to the north from Mont Albert and the western Chic-Chocs Range. Where intersecting striae were noted, the older flows are associated with a locally developed ice cap. The rare occurrences of striae and erratics, and morphometric and lithological characteristics of summit diamictons, imply limited basal erosion by both local and regional ice caps. This is postulated to result from early protection of rock surfaces by the initial buildup of thin, frozen-based ice in the eastern Chic-Chocs Range. A compact till mantle in the cols and on the coastal plateau and striae parallel to col directions indicate a downslope transition to wet-based ice. Occasional gneiss boulders above the marine limit between Cap-Chat and Sainte-Anne-des-Monts indicate a slight onlap of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS), but the latter was excluded from the interior of the peninsula east of Cap-Chat. Whole-rock geochemistry from three granitoid erratics on Chic-Chocs summits and one in the York River basin indicates a local Devonian rather than a Precambrian Canadian Shield source. The absence of southward downwarping of synchronous postglacial marine limits across the Gaspé Peninsula corroborates this view for the LGM.

Spruce budworm bas invaded the forest of Québec since 1939, especially the pines of the coniferous area. There are jour major infested regions : three are located on the North shore of the St. Lawrence river : in the Gatineau river bassin, in the Laurentians between the Lachute Area and lake St. John, and in the North Shore region behind Baie Comeau Sept-Iles. The fourth region starts behind Rimouski and spreads eastward, covering the whole Gaspé peninsula. In this last the authorities are quite concerned about this plague, which is becoming a serious menace to the forest industries. Various air-spays have been used during the past jour years in order to circumscribe the dammages, and more than 4,000,000 acres have been treated with DDT, first step toward the rehabilitation of the forest.

We have recently carried out a study of spermiogenic differentiation in two geographically isolated populations of Aphanius dispar (freshwater teleost), with a view to ascertaining variation at the ultrastructural level. The sampling areas were the Jebel Al Akhdar in the north (Group A) and the Dhofar region (Group B) in the south. Specimens from each group were collected, the testes removed, fixed in Karnovsky solution, post fixed in OsO, en bloc stained with uranyl acetate and then routinely processed to Agar 100 resin, semi and ultrathin sections were prepared for study.

Abstract Determination of the mass output through the St. Lawrence River outflow system is an important component in computing mass balance of chemical loadings to Lake Ontario. The total flow rate in the St. Lawrence River System at the Wolfe Island area was calculated from detailed time series current meter measurements from a network of current meters and Lagrangian drifter experiments. This flow is roughly distributed in the ratio of 55% to 45% in the South and North channel, respectively. Loading estimates of selected chemicals have been made by combining the above transport calculations with the ongoing chemical monitoring data at the St. Lawrence outflow. A vertical gradient in the concentration of some organic and inorganic chemicals was observed. The measured concentration for some of the chemicals was higher during the summer months and also is higher in the South Channel than in the North Channel of the St. Lawrence River. These loading estimates are useful not only for modelling the mass balance of chemicals in Lake Ontario but also for serving as input loadings to the St. Lawrence River system from Lake Ontario.

Although extensive archeological research works have been conducted in the Serteya region in recent years, the Holocene climate history in the Western Dvina Lakeland in Western Russia is still poorly understood. The Neolithic human occupation of the Serteyka lake–river system responded to climate oscillations, resulting in the development of a pile-dwelling settlement between 5.9 and 4.2 ka cal BP. In this paper, we present the quantitative paleoclimatic reconstructions of the Northgrippian stage (8.2–4.2 ka cal BP) from the Great Serteya Palaeolake Basin. The reconstructions were created based on a multiproxy (Chironomidae, pollen and Cladocera) approach. The mean July air temperature remained at 17–20 °C, which is similar to the present temperature in the Smolensk Upland. The summer temperature revealed only weak oscillations during 5.9 and 4.2 ka cal BP. A more remarkable feature during those events was an increase in continentality, manifested by a lower winter temperature and lower annual precipitation. During the third, intermediate oscillation in 5.0–4.7 ka cal BP, a rise in summer temperature and stronger shifts in continental air masses were recorded. It is still unclear if the above-described climate fluctuations are linked to the North Atlantic Oscillation and can be interpreted as an indication of Bond events because only a few high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstructions from the region have been presented and these reconstructions do not demonstrate explicit oscillations in the period of 5.9 and 4.2 ka cal BP.

Nearly all forest regions in the Province of Quebec where balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) is an important tree component have been subjected to severe defoliation by the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), during the past 20 years. These outbreaks have followed an easterly direction beginning near the Ontario-Quebec border in 1939 and ending in the Gaspé Peninsula in 1958.

The Llert syncline is located in the South-central Pyrenees, between the eastern termination of the EW-trending Cotiella Basin and the north-western limb of the NS-trending Turbón-Serrado fold system. The Cotiella Basin is an inverted upper Coniacian-lower Santonian salt-floored post-rift extensional basin developed along the northern Iberian rift system. The Turbón-Serrado fold system consists of upper Santonian – Maastrichtian contractional salt-cored anticlines developed along an inverted transfer zone of the Pyrenean rift system. Based on field research, this paper presents a 3D reconstruction of the Llert syncline in order to further constrain the transition between these oblique salt-related structures. Our results suggest that the evolution of the Llert syncline was mainly controlled by tectonic shortening related to the tectonic inversion of the Cotiella Basin synchronously to the growth of the Turbón-Serrado detachment anticline, and by the pre-compressional structural framework of the Pyrenean rift system. Our contribution provides new insight into the geometric and kinematic relationships of structures developed during the inversion of passive margins involving salt.
