Semiotics is the investigation of the nature, type and function of signs in all walks of life. It is the science of interpreting signs and showing how meaning is generated by and through a shared cultural code.  Being a verbal corpus of imaginatively works of art, literature with all its genres, i.e. poetry, drama, fiction, the short story, etc. lends itself to semiotics scrutiny. Verbal works of artifact as such can be analyzed in terms of semiotic theory. This paper purports to explore Edgar Allan Poe’ The Black Cat as a structure of interconnected signs which are organically rooted into the code of horror. If culture, in one sense, is the complex network of beliefs, behaviors and patterns of thinking, these psychopathic cognitive patterns are wittingly structured in the semiotic system of Poe’s narrative work of art. The study proceeds with the hypothesis that Poe’s The Black Cat is a semiotic metaphor or a representation of the actual world of insanity which is resulted from obsession in things. The short story is analyzed in terms of the newly semiotic approach, namely The Semiotic triangle. This tripartite model is a three-dimensional model whose axes are: syntagmaticity, paradigmaticity and signification. The dimensions are supposed to be the foundations of the construction of Poe’s literary text. One result of the study has shown that fear is not an organic human nature in The Black Cat, but a newly born behavior which has led to a serial of crimes committed by the unnamed author. This abnormal behaviorism is encoded in the semiotic veins of Poe’s newly literary genre, i.e. the narratology of horror. The scope of the study is limited to Poe’s The Black Cat as a par excellent narrative work of that creative genre. The paper is rounded up with concluding remarks elicited from the semiotic analysis.

AbstractThe complexity and flexibility of tagmemic theory, as a semiotic theory developed by Kenneth L. Pike, can be better understood by examining how it applies to a simple semiotic system like traffic lights. We can then compare the result with how it functions in analyzing a piece of natural language. Tagmemic theory introduces three observer viewpoints – the particle view, the wave view, and the field view. Each view generates a suite of questions to answer. Any one of the views results in a “complete” description of traffic lights, from which the information about the other views can be inferred. And yet each view is distinct in texture from the others, and the existence of such multiple views – each with a claim to emic integrity and each serving as a perspective on the whole – has to be accounted for in a robust semiotic approach. The same phenomena occur when we apply the three views to the analysis of meaning in natural language. The chief illustration is to analyze the meaning of the word dog in multiple ways. The multi-dimensional potential for semiotic analysis highlights the limitations of Aristotelian logic and symbolic logic, both of which simplify for the sake of rigor.

Plenty of media is used, such as newspapers, magazines, novels, and movies to share information and incorporate some life values, including gender equality values. The collection of short stories entitled NING was written by Irma Argiyanti. She is an active Lombok writer. This research aims to identify the writer's ideology through the artwork (the short story collection). This methodological framework was adopted from Fairclough’s concept of the three-dimensional model, explored gender representation in the short stories, and tried to identify the truth behind the texts' ideology. The results show that the stories represent implicitly and explicitly gender equality values. Therefore, the topics and the stories' flow provide patriarchy, women empowerment, and equality values in the family. Based on the data, there are about 33 words representing women’s names and 19 words of men. Consequently, the short stories pursue the readers to think, elaborate, and accept gender equality values, and it is expected to implement in daily life and change to be a better society.

Three-dimensional multicellular spheroids (MCSs) have received extensive attention in the field of biomedicine due to their ability to simulate the structure and function of tissues in vivo more accurately than traditional in vitro two-dimensional models and to simulate cell–cell and cell extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. It has become an important in vitro three-dimensional model for tumor research, high-throughput drug screening, tissue engineering, and basic biology research. In the review, we first summarize methods for MCSs generation and their respective advantages and disadvantages and highlight the advances of hydrogel and microfluidic systems in the generation of spheroids. Then, we look at the application of MCSs in cancer research and other aspects. Finally, we discuss the development direction and prospects of MCSs

<p>Language in a literary work facilitates authors conveying motives in their works. Through language, the authors send messages to the readers. Therefore, a literary discourse analysis with limitless meanings could reveal the author’s motives. This analysis used a semiotic approach which focuses on literacy analysis through language as a symbol. A short story called <em>Godlob</em> by Danarto has a dimension of a communal language that is immediately digestible. But it does not mean that the author’s motives can be easily grasped by the readers. This might happen because the implicit purposes lie within the uncommon language used in this short story. With that, the story contains a logical path that needs to be analyzed which prioritizes language as a symbol with certain meanings. Based on a semiotics approach, <em>Goldlob</em> addresses critical issues relating to a Christian faith -- how Jesus was killed and nailed on the cross was God’s way to cleanse the sin of man. This issue is a way to explain and share the history of Jesus’ death to save the world and becomes the truth and a Christian doctrine. A Christian literacy teaching sustains a Christian faith.

Many cells contain non-centrosomal arrays of microtubules (MTs), but the assembly, organisation and function of these arrays are poorly understood. We present the first theoretical model for the non-centrosomal MT cytoskeleton in Drosophila oocytes, in which bicoid and oskar mRNAs become localised to establish the anterior-posterior body axis. Constrained by experimental measurements, the model shows that a simple gradient of cortical MT nucleation is sufficient to reproduce the observed MT distribution, cytoplasmic flow patterns and localisation of oskar and naive bicoid mRNAs. Our simulations exclude a major role for cytoplasmic flows in localisation and reveal an organisation of the MT cytoskeleton that is more ordered than previously thought. Furthermore, modulating cortical MT nucleation induces a bifurcation in cytoskeletal organisation that accounts for the phenotypes of polarity mutants. Thus, our three-dimensional model explains many features of the MT network and highlights the importance of differential cortical MT nucleation for axis formation.

The pusules of an armoured dinoflagellate (Prorocentrum micans) and an unarmoured species (Amphidinium carterae) were examined for effects of certain physicochemical factors, physiological inhibitors, and cytological markers. Fluxes in both salinity and temperature caused pusular size changes, while colchicine, cytochalasin B, and pH changes (in the range 6.0–8.0) had little or no effect. The treatment with solutions of horseradish peroxidase, cationized ferritin, and lectins indicated uptake of these macromolecules via the flagellar canal into the pusules of both dinoflagellates. A three-dimensional model is proposed for the A. carterae pusule based on sequential sections examined by TEM. It is suggested that a fibrillar collar system, in conjunction with the flagellar beating, plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of materials in and out of the pusule. The overall results suggest a multiple function for the dinoflagellate pusule, including osmoregulation, macromolecule uptake, and probably, secretion.

The structure of nonwovens gives special functions, and the establishment of the structure model has important reference significance for the realization of functions. In this work, the two-dimensional configuration of polyester fibers in a spunlaced nonwoven fabric was extracted, and the configurational feature points of 2500 fibers were obtained. Combined with the generative adversarial nets algorithm, the generation model of the two-dimensional configuration of fibers was proposed after learning the configuration feature of 2500 fibers. Based on the assumption that the fibers are randomly distributed in the nonwoven fabric, we established a three-dimensional model of the spunlaced nonwoven fabric on the fiber scale using ABAQUS software. In addition, the water diffusion experiment and simulation were carried out to visualize the diffusion process of a water droplet in the nonwoven fabric, verifying the accuracy of the model. This method provides a novel idea for the modeling of textile structure on the fiber scale, which can be regarded as a model basis for the subsequent simulation analysis and function research.

The research is entitled “A Semiotic Analysis on Eldorado poem by Edgar Allan Poe”. This study is aimed to know the meaning of the symbols of Gallant knight, Eldorado, shadow, a pilgrim shadow, shade, over the mountains related to the socio-historical issue. This study is also used in the qualitative method and library research. Starting from the writers’ interest in the poem and think that, the poem has a unique word inside it. In this research, the knight who do the long journey to search for “Eldorado”. This study focuses on semiotic analysis, which uses the semiotic approach. Charles Sanders Pierce is the theory that the writers use to analyze “Eldorado” poem by Edgar Allan Poe. The use of semiotic analysis is to find a symbol of Eldorado poem. This study also used the socio-historical approach that correlates with the Eldorado poem. The symbols of Eldorado poem, a gallant knight, Eldorado, shadow, a pilgrim shadow, shade, and over the mountains represent the meaning, where Eldorado is true of a wealthy city made of gold. However, Eldorado is not a place but a person. The whole journey of Europeans to find a golden city is in vain. Eldorado's poem is related to the symbol of time in 1849 in California, where the attitude of the Muisca tribe is different from the people of Europe who see gold as a symbol of wealth, as well as power. Furthermore, the minds of Europeans who heard the story were only fascinated by how much gold was thrown into the lake or buried in shrines throughout Colombia. Not the meaning of gold itself. That is why Poe revealed a poem entitled Eldorado which means that Eldorado itself was a rich king who had covered his entire body with gold.
