Abstract

This study aims to develop a scale to measure eight-grade secondary school students' attitudes towards individual peace. The items of the scale have been prepared by the researcher based on a literature review. The study sample included 223 eight grade students from different schools in the Mamak district of Ankara for the 2015-2016 school year. At the end of the analysis, the correlation coefficients obtained from item-factor total and adjusted correlation were found to be above .21 and all items were statistically significant. In the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the scale items were split into four dimensions: "State before Peace", "Factors for Peace", "Factors for Sulking" and "Assitance in Peacemaking". The Chi-square (X2) value appropriate for the model developed based on the results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and statistical significance levels showed that the proposed model was appropriate for the collected data. Reliability coefficients tested for the whole scale and its sub-dimensions revealed that the scale was suitable to measure eight-grade secondary school students' attitudes towards peace.

Abstract. The center of interest of studying students’ attitudes towards a subject lies in its possibility to improve the teaching process. This work reveals an instrument to measure attitudes towards Corporal Expression, after a process of elaboration and validation. As a result, we make a questionnarie aimed at Secondary School students and structured into four factors and 32 items known. The building process of the questionnarie consisted of content validity analysis, construct validity, and reliability. Content validity was carried out following the Lawshe formula to analyze the information provided by the group of experts. Construct validity involved a factorial analysis of the data extracted from a pilot study. In order to check reliability, Cronbach alpha statistical calculation was taken into consideration. At the end of this procedure, we obtain an instrument for measuring attitudes towards Corporal Expression in Secondary School Students as the main result.

The purpose of this study is to adapt the Survey of Attitudes Towards Statistics (SATS-36) for Estonian secondary school students in order to develop a valid instrument to measure students’ attitudes within the Estonian educational context. The SATS-36 was administered to Estonian-speaking secondary school students before their compulsory statistics course. Because the fit indices for confirmatory factor analysis did not indicate a good fit, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to find a new model. It validated a four-factor structure of the scale, excluding nine items. Good indices for both reliability and validity were obtained. Trends in secondary school students’ attitudes were also examined to investigate the effects of gender and gender combined with the level of education. Results showed that students tended to feel rather positively about statistics at the beginning of the course. All four factors displayed differences between boys and girls. Comparison of lower and upper secondary level students showed that students from the upper secondary level value statistics more highly. The authors recommend SATS with some small proposed changes to make it even more suitable for the secondary level. First published May 2017 at Statistics Education Research Journal Archives

The Motivation Toward the Environment Scale (MTES), developed in Canada, measures people’s self-determined motivation for doing something for the environment. Answering the call by its original developers, this study further validated the MTES within a sample of 779 Dutch-speaking senior secondary school students, aged 17 to 19, in the north of Belgium. More specifically, reliability and construct validity of a Dutch translation of the MTES were verified. To this measure, confirmatory factor analysis was used, and the hypothesized simplex structure was tested through correlation analyses. Results confirmed the reliability of the MTES and a five-scale version of the MTES, excluding identified motivation, is introduced. This variable-centered approach was complemented by the adoption of a person-centered approach for identifying MTES profiles. Using cluster analysis, four meaningful MTES profiles emerged, with amotivation scoring medium to high in all but one. Theoretical implications of the findings and suggestions for interventions and further research are discussed.

Argues that secondary school students' attitudes toward reading may be conceptualized multi-dimensionally as consisting of Individual Development, Utilitarian, and Enjoyment factors. Describes the development of self-report scales designed to measure each of these dimensions of reading attitude. Factor analyses showed the dimensions to be distinguishable empirically one from the other. The three scales were found to be internally consistent (α = .69-.92) and stable (α = .72-.90). Concurrent validity data based on peer ratings are also provided. Implications for pedagogical and research issues arising from this conceptualization of attitude toward reading are also discussed.

Empirical observations reveal low enrolment of senior secondary school students for physical education at external examination bodies. The poor rate of students' choice of the subject at this level is a matter of concern to professionals, given the fact of monumental benefits of physical education as a science subject to humanity. The study was conducted to examine how psycho-administrative factors influence the choice of physical education by senior secondary school students at external examination bodies (in Nigeria) to come up with modalities to increase enrolment of the subject at external examination bodies. Descriptive method was applied for the study due to large respondents involved. Self-developed validated questionnaire tagged psycho-administrative determinants for choice of physical education among senior secondary school students at external examination bodies (PADGPEAS) was applied for the research. Out of three thousand and twenty-four (3024) questionnaire forms administered, only two thousand and fifty (2950) copies completed and returned were coded for analysis, with the use of descriptive statistics of percentages and nonparametric statistics of Chi-square (x 2) at 0.05 level of significant. Results unraveled a remarkable influence of psycho-administrative variables on the choice at physical education among senior secondary school students at external examination bodies. Based on this outcome, it is suggested that utilization of variety of methods by physical education teachers will go a long way to kindle the interest of the students for the subject. Enlightenment of students and parents on the values of physical education will facilitate remarkable positive attitude of both parts that relocate their position in favor of the subject.

Science education in Rwandan schools still faces a number of challenges including the lack or shortage of equipment available for science experiments. This paper describes research conducted to assess the impact of using improvised versus conventional laboratory equipment in experiments. Eighty-five lower secondary school students were assessed using a semi-experimental post-test design on thermal expansion of bodies. Data analysis using a t-test produced a t-Stat of 2.74 over a t-Critical of 1.98 indicating a statistical significance between the two experimental groups in favour of the group using improvised equipment. As a result, it is recommended that improvised equipment be used in those instances in which there is a lack or shortage of conventional equipment since students’ achievement was similar regardless of the type of equipment used.

The purpose of the study was to examine secondary school students' attitudes towards social media and their loneliness levels in terms of gender and whether they do sports or not. The sample of the study consisted of 175 female and 269 male secondary school stıdents. To collect data personal information form, Social Media Attitude Scale (Otrar ve Argın, 2013) and UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, Peplau, & Cutrona, 1980) were used to in this study. Independent t test analysis was conducted to examine whether the participants' social media attitudes and loneliness levels differed with regard to gender and do sport. According to the results, there was no significant difference in social media attitudes (t = -.832, p > .05) with regard to gender. However, loneliness levels of the participants seems to be significantly different with regard to gender (t = -6.513, p = .000). When the participants were examined whether they do sports or not, there was not any significant difference in social media attitudes (t = -.427, p> .05). However, the levels of loneliness was significantly found to be different in terms of doing sports or not (t = -3.675, p = .000). Furthermore, there was not a significant relationship between social media attitudes and loneliness (p > .05). It can be concluded that sport and regular physical activity can be considered as a means to provide environments where individuals will feel far away from the feeling of loneliness and that they will feel themselves more valuable.

As one of the protagonists in education, the perspective of the students is fundamental in the determination of inclusive education in an educational center. The Index for Inclusion is an instrument and strategy for self-evaluation. One of their questionnaires, the questionnaire for compulsory secondary education students, is intended for students and has become one of the most used instruments to help teaching teams to self-assess their political and practical cultures from the perspective of the values and principles of educational inclusion worldwide. Some of the questionnaires included in the Index have been used in many studies, mainly in a qualitative way. For this reason, the present study intends to show evidence of validity of the Index for Inclusion questionnaire of students in a quantitative way through an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In this study, 727 secondary school students (359 boys and 368 girls) aged between 13 and 19 years (M = 13.89; SD = 1.35) took part. They belonged to six educational centers in the province of Almeria. To analyze the temporal stability of the Index for Inclusion student questionnaire, a second independent sample of 81 secondary school students was used, aged between 15 and 18 years (M= 16.14; SD = 0.78). The results revealed adequate adjustment rates, showing the invariant structure with respect to gender. The Student Inclusion Index was shown to be a robust and adequate psychometric instrument to assess the degree of development of inclusive education in schools from the perspective of secondary school students, and therefore, its future application to students in schools is recommended.
