In a fire incident case in a modern high-rise complex building, most occupants use the stairs to evacuate; hence, it is critical to secure the safety of vertical escape routes, such as the stairs. However, in Korea, the size of the stairwell is stipulated as a universal standard, and there are insufficient regulations and studies on the behavioral characteristics of occupants that may occur during the vertical evacuation of buildings. Therefore, in the evacuation experiment conducted at the W University in Japan, the relationship between the density and velocity of the occupants and the flow coefficient were analyzed during merging in the stairwell to derive a regression equation. When the stair width acted as a variable, the behavioral characteristics of the occupants and the evacuation time inside the stairwell were analyzed to obtain the basic data for improving the evacuation safety in the stairwell.

Abstract- Many of high-rise office buildings in Indonesia applies efficiency and effectivity of building form, cost, and time for construction as a number one priority. As a result, high-rise office buildings appears with aminimum-articulated form, and show the dominance by using glass materials as a facade. However, there arealso high-rise office buildings that have an articulated form and its facades that are not dominated by glass, although they appear in small numbers. Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and Wisma Dharmala Sakti Surabayaare one of them. Moreover, both buildings were designed by foreign architect, Paul Rudolph. Based on thepotentials of both buildings, this research focused on Paul Rudolph’s principles in designing high-rise officebuildings in Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and Wisma Dharmala Sakti SurabayaLooking at the phenomena of high-rise office buildings in Indonesia as described earlier, this smallnumber and the articulated form of high-rise office buildings designed by Paul Rudolph in Indonesia areinteresting to be understood even more. The main purpose of this research is to reveal the relationship betweenPaul Rudolph’s design principles with buildings, which are Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and WismaDharmala Sakti Surabaya.Using an interpretative method in a qualitative research, this research utilized theories that helpsunderstanding of an office building, theories that related to Paul Rudolph’s background and common thoughtabout architecture, and also Paul Rudolph’s theory about determinants of architectural form as a literaturestudy. Building’s Anatomy Theory is used as a surgical tool to disect the study cases, which happens to beWisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and Wisma Dharmala Sakti Surabaya.Result of this research are six points of Paul Rudolph’s principles in designing high-rise office buildingwhich are: repetition, space, scale, rotation, light, and context. Implementation of Paul Rudolph’s designprinciples in both study cases can be seen in the dominance of rotation and repetition of building elements. Theapplication of these two principles can fulfill all the three aspects of Paul Rudolph’s design ideal, which areform, context, and cycle.Benefit of this research is to enrich architectural vocabulary about design principles of a high-riseoffice buildings in Indonesia for the concerned educational institution, as a consideration and input toarchitects and the stakeholders to be more sensitive and critical in designing high-rise buildings in Indonesia,as a reference and study case about design principles of a high-rise office buildings for students, academics, architects, and the public with the focus of study concerned, and enrich the knowledge about Paul Rudolph’sdesign principles especially in designing high-rise office buildings in Indonesia for researcher. Keywords: Paul Rudolph, Design Principles, Office, Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta, Wisma Dharmala SaktiSurabaya.

Sarcopenic obesity is associated with several negative health outcomes. However, the prevalence of this condition – and the relationship to physical performance parameters – varies across definitions. The aim of this cross-sectional investigation was to describe the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity using different published definitions and their relationship with handgrip strength and walking speed in older Canadian adults. Individuals aged 65+ in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (n = 11,803; 49.6% male, 50.4% female) were included. Body composition was measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry. Sarcopenic obesity was defined using 29 definitions. Low handgrip strength was identified as < 27 kg in males and < 16 kg in females and poor physical performance was defined as gait speed ≤ 0.8 m/s. The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity ranged from 0.1 to 85.3% in males, and from 0 to 80.4% in females. Sarcopenic obesity was frequently associated with low handgrip strength (p < 0.05) in both males (14/17 definitions, 82.4%) and females (21/29 definitions, 72.4%). In very few definitions, sarcopenic obesity was associated with slow gait speed (males: 1/17 definitions [6.7%]; females: 2/29 [6.9%]). In conclusion, the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity varied greatly according to definitions and sarcopenic obesity was frequently associated with low handgrip strength.

The study reveals the aspects that defi ne the concept of “lifestyle”, including the main categories: standard of living, lifestyle, quality of life and lifestyle. Insuffi cient knowledge of the mutual infl uence of people’s “lifestyle” on the typological structure of apartments and residential buildings, on the quality of the urban environment is emphasized. The infl uence of the level of urbanization of the city territory on the characteristics of the “urban lifestyle” is considered. Problematic issues are raised related to the debate on the relationship between building density and comfort and the quality index of the living environment. The main directions of fundamental research in the fi eld of architecture, aimed at the development of new types of buildings, are touched upon. The emphasis is made on the methods of using high-rise buildings for the humanization of the urban environment and the formation of a modern “compact city”.

Based on the seminal paper of Case, Quigley and Shiller (2013), we investigate the effects of financial and housing wealth on consumption.  Using quarterly data from 1975 to 2016, for all States of U.S. economy, and a different methodology in measuring wealth, we report relatively greater financial effects than housing effects on consumption.  Specifically, in our basic utilized model, the calculated elasticity for financial wealth is 0.060, while for housing is 0.045.  The results are not in agreement with the ones obtained by Case, Quigley and Shiller.  In an attempt to investigate the disparity we proceed by incorporating the introduction of the Tax Reform Act in 1986, which increased incentives for owner-occupied housing investments.  Finally, due to distributional factors at work, and taking into account the pronounced uneven distribution of wealth we investigate the effects of wealth for 8 states that include the Metropolitan areas comprising of the well known Case-Shiller 10-City Composite Index.  Now the housing effect on consumption is much stronger and larger than the financial effect.  Additionally, we forecast the consumption changes at the time of the high rise and large drops in house prices for these states.  Forecasts showed a recession from the fall of Lehman Brothers until the fourth quarter of 2011.  These forecasts were not verified.  Probably, the new techniques used by politics played an important role.  We also find that extreme behaviors cannot be predicted.

Although numerous demographic and behavioral characteristics have been associated with early triers, little research has been done examining the relationship between early trial and product attributes. This study suggests that the degree of newness of a product is a major factor in determining who tries it.

Purpose There is a dearth of basic analysis about how the demographics of residents living in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) subsidized properties relate to the quality of housing. This research vacuum is often filled by popular stereotypes. This study aims to address this gap by examining the relationship between the demographics of residents and inspection scores. Design/methodology/approach Two data sources are drawn from the analysis: the 2018 HUD Picture of Subsidized Households database and HUD’s 2018 REAC Public and Multi-Family Housing Inspection Scores. Linear and logistic regression analysis were conducted, and selected data were mapped using GIS software. Findings The analysis examines the demographics of site-based subsidized properties in relation to inspection scores. In 2018, HUD identified 31,225 traditional public housing and other site-based multi-family properties in its Picture of Subsidized Households database. Residents living in these properties are often stereotyped as a homogeneous group that is predominantly composed of single, minority women with children who are welfare dependent. Similarly, properties are often portrayed as dilapidated, high-rise projects in segregated urban communities. The results from the analysis do not support these stereotypes about HUD-subsidized multi-family properties. By contrast, the results indicate that a diverse group of households lives in HUD-subsidized multi-family properties. Originality/value There is a need for scholars, advocates and practitioners to more aggressively challenge the popular stereotypes about site-based subsidized housing. In particular, there is a need for enhanced public scholarship focused on the dissemination of evidence-based research.

The purpose of this study is to verify the environmental performance of the novel Void Deck Slab (VDS) system developed by the authors. The proposed VDS is a void slab system with enhanced design features that improve the constructability of the system through the elimination of additional works required to connect the void formers with the anchoring devices. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) technique was adopted to assess the carbon dioxide emissions of the void slab system with reference to the ordinary reinforced concrete slab. The system boundary of this study ranged from raw materials to pre-operation phase, in accordance with ISO 14044. The total CO2 emissions of the ordinary reinforced concrete slab and the void slab system were 204,433.06 and 151,754.75 kg CO2-eq, respectively, which equated to about 34% less emissions for the void slab system. In the case of the ordinary reinforced concrete slab, moulds accounted for approximately 62% of CO2 emission, followed by concrete (~34%). The main source of CO2 emissions for the void slab system was concrete that accounted for ~50%, followed by moulds and deck plates that accounted for roughly 27% and 19%, respectively. In the case of the void slab system, void formers would enable a lower amount of concrete, as well as the self-weight of the slab. Besides, although the void formers filled a significant volume of the slab, the contribution to CO2 emissions was less than 1%.

With the development of energy-saving and emission-reduction, solar energy as a clean energy with excellent characteristics has bright prospects for development and application in residential environment with high energy consumption. With the intensification of land use, there are more and more high-rise residential areas in the city. If the residential construction becomes more compact, the solar radiation of the buildings will be in loss. Therefore, there may exist some restrictive relationship between the residential layout patterns and the solar radiation quantity. Through the multiple response frequency analysis method of SPSS, the study summarizes three typical high-rise residential layout patterns, which are parallel determinant, non-parallel determinant and three-sided enclosure. The Autodesk Ecotect is used to simulate the solar radiation quantity of each building roof and south facade. Last, obtain the relationship between the residential layout index and the solar radiation quantity. The results show that there actually exists certain correlativity between solar radiation quantity and floor area ratio, building density and building height; meanwhile, each annual solar radiation quantity changed by residential layout index has its own variable curve. The results also indicate that three-sided enclosure layout pattern has greater solar radiation potential than parallel determinant and non-parallel determinant. By summarizing the corresponding conclusions, the optimal mode of high-rise settlements with high solar radiation is explored, which can provide reference for further residential planning.
