Climate change penalty and benefit on surface ozone: A global perspective based on CMIP6 earth system models

This work presents an analysis of the effect of climate change on surface ozone discussing the related penalties and benefits around the globe from the global modeling perspective based on simulations with five CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6) Earth System Models. As part of AerChemMIP (Aerosol Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project) all models conducted simulation experiments considering future climate (ssp370SST) and present-day climate (ssp370pdSST) under the same future emissions trajectory (SSP3-7.0). A multi-model global average climate change benefit on surface ozone of -0.96±0.07 ppbv oC-1 is calculated which is mainly linked to the dominating role of enhanced ozone destruction with higher water vapour abudances under a warmer climate. Over regions remote from pollution sources, there is a robust decline in mean surface ozone concentration on an annual basis as well as for boreal winter and summer varying spatially from -0.2 to -2 ppbv oC-1, with strongest decline over tropical oceanic regions. The implication is that over regions remote from pollution sources (except over the Arctic) there is a consistent climate change benefit for baseline ozone due to global warming. However, ozone increases over regions close to anthropogenic pollution sources or close to enhanced natural Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOC) emission sources with a rate ranging regionally from 0.2 to 2 ppbv oC-1, implying a regional surface ozone penalty due to global warming. Overall, the future climate change enhances the efficiency of precursor emissions to generate surface ozone in polluted regions and thus the magnitude of this effect depends on the regional emission changes considered in this study within the SSP3_7.0 scenario. The comparison of the climate change impact effect on surface ozone versus the combined effect of climate and emission changes indicates the dominant role of precursor emission changes in projecting surface ozone concentrations under future climate change scenarios.

Uncertainties in projected surface mass balance over the polar ice sheets from dynamically downscaled EC-Earth models

The future rates of ice sheet melt in Greenland and Antarctica are an important factor when making estimates of the likely rate of sea level rise. Global climate models that took part in the fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) have generally been unable to replicate observed rates of ice sheet melt. With the advent of the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), with a general increase in the equilibrium climate sensitivity, we here compare two versions of the global climate model EC-Earth using the regional climate model HIRHAM5 downscaling of EC-Earth for Greenland and Antarctica. One version (v2) of EC-Earth is taken from CMIP5 for the high-emissions Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario and the other (v3) from CMIP6 for the comparable high-emissions Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5-8.5 (SSP5-8.5) scenario. For Greenland, we downscale the two versions of EC-Earth for the historical period 1991–2010 and for the scenario period 2081–2100. For Antarctica, the periods are 1971–2000 and 2071–2100, respectively. For the Greenland Ice Sheet, we find that the mean change in temperature is 5.9 ∘C when downscaling EC-Earth v2 and 6.8 ∘C when downscaling EC-Earth v3. Corresponding values for Antarctica are 4.1 ∘C for v2 and 4.8 ∘C for v3. The mean change in surface mass balance at the end of the century under these high-emissions scenarios is found to be −290 Gt yr−1 (v2) and −1640 Gt yr−1 (v3) for Greenland and 420 Gt yr−1 (v2) and 80 Gt yr−1 (v3) for Antarctica. These distinct differences in temperature change and particularly surface mass balance change are a result of the higher equilibrium climate sensitivity in EC-Earth v3 (4.3 K) compared with 3.3 K in EC-Earth v2 and the differences in greenhouse gas concentrations between the RCP8.5 and the SSP5-8.5 scenarios.

Mass loss of the Antarctic ice sheet until the year 3000 under a sustained late-21st-century climate

Ice-sheet simulations of Antarctica extending to the year 3000 are analysed to investigate the long-term impacts of 21st-century warming. Climate projections are used as forcing until 2100 and afterwards no climate trend is applied. Fourteen experiments are for the ‘unabated warming’ pathway, and three are for the ‘reduced emissions’ pathway. For the unabated warming path simulations, West Antarctica suffers a much more severe ice loss than East Antarctica. In these cases, the mass loss amounts to an ensemble average of ~3.5 m sea-level equivalent (SLE) by the year 3000 and ~5.3 m for the most sensitive experiment. Four phases of mass loss occur during the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet. For the reduced emissions pathway, the mean mass loss is ~0.24 m SLE. By demonstrating that the consequences of the 21st century unabated warming path forcing are large and long term, the results present a different perspective to ISMIP6 (Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6). Extended ABUMIP (Antarctic BUttressing Model Intercomparison Project) simulations, assuming sudden and sustained ice-shelf collapse, with and without bedrock rebound, corroborate a negative feedback for ice loss found in previous studies, where bedrock rebound acts to slow the rate of ice loss.

Potenciales áreas cultivables de pasifloras en una región tropical considerando escenarios de cambio climático

Contextualización: El cambio climático y las actividades antrópicas sobre los recursos naturales se constituyen como los principales causantes de la pérdida de biodiversidad y la redistribución de las especies. Vacío de conocimiento: Sin embargo, los efectos a nivel de comunidades y ecosistemas, así como los impactos en cultivos agrícolas en escala regional, son poco estudiados. Los modelos de distribución de especies se han convertido, por lo tanto, en valiosas herramientas para la predicción de áreas potencialmente aptas para especies cultivables, su gestión y planificación. Propósito: Este estudio consistió en la predicción de potenciales áreas cultivables de maracuyá (Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa Degener), granadilla (Passiflora ligularis Juss), y cholupa (Passiflora maliformis L.) en una región tropical, a través del modelo MaxEnt, en escenarios de cambio climático. Metodología: Se utilizaron como datos de entrada (para el modelo MaxEnt) registros de presencia de las especies analizadas, obtenidos a partir de sus coordenadas geográficas. En total, fueron usados 141 registros de presencia de maracuyá, 256 registros de granadilla y 40 registros de cholupa, así como 12 variables bioclimáticas para las proyecciones actuales y futuras en los periodos 2050 y 2070, considerando así dos escenarios RCPs (Representative Concentration Pathways) del Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) (RCP 4.5 y RCP 8.5). Resultados y conclusiones: Los resultados revelan que las potenciales áreas cultivables para las especies analizadas podrían pronosticarse a través de MaxEnt utilizando registros de presencia en campo y variables bioclimáticas. Así mismo, las simulaciones indicaron que las áreas de ocurrencia potencial para las especies analizadas podrían disminuir en el futuro dependiendo de los escenarios climáticos (RCP 4.5 y RCP 8.5) para los periodos 2050 y 2070. Para los cultivos de maracuyá, granadilla y cholupa, las mayores reducciones en las áreas de ocurrencia potencial corresponden al 23 %, 25 % y 31 % respectivamente, y se presentarían en el período 2070 en un escenario pesimista (RCP 8.5). Este es el primer estudio que pronostica las potenciales áreas cultivables de pasifloras utilizando el modelo Maxent y escenarios de cambio climático en escala regional en una región tropical. El abordaje propuesto puede proveer importantes herramientas para la gestión y aprovechamiento sostenible de las especies estudiadas.

Credibility via Coupling

This study investigates Model Intercomparison Projects (MIPs) as one example of a coordinated approach to establishing scientific credibility. MIPs originated within climate science as a method to evaluate and compare disparate climate models, but MIPs or MIP-like projects are now spreading to many scientific fields. Within climate science, MIPs have advanced knowledge of: a) the climate phenomena being modeled, and b) the building of climate models themselves. MIPs thus build scientific confidence in the climate modeling enterprise writ large, reducing questions of the credibility or reproducibility of any single model. This paper will discuss how MIPs organize people, models, and data through institution and infrastructure coupling (IIC). IIC involves establishing mechanisms and technologies for collecting, distributing, and comparing data and models (infrastructural work), alongside corresponding governance structures, rules of participation, and collaboration mechanisms that enable partners around the world to work together effectively (institutional work). Coupling these efforts involves developing formal and informal ways to standardize data and metadata, create common vocabularies, provide uniform tools and methods for evaluating resulting data, and build community around shared research topics.

Zukünftige Klimaänderungen in Deutschland, Gegenüberstellung verschiedener Methoden und Ensembles

<p>Die regionalen Klimasimulationen des EURO-CORDEX-Ensembles leisten einen grundlegenden Beitrag zur Abschätzung des Klimawandels und seiner Folgen. Diese regionalen Klimasimulationen verwenden als Antrieb die Daten von 14 Globalmodellsimulationen aus CMIP5 <em>(</em>Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5). Da nicht die gesamte Bandbreite der CMIP5 Modelle genutzt werden kann, ist es für die Nutzer des EURO-CORDEX-Ensembles wichtig zu wissen, wie die Ergebnisse der antreibenden Globalmodellsimulationen in das<em> </em>gesamte CMIP5 einzuordnen sind. Darüber hinaus werden auch Ergebnisse des neue CMIP6 Ensembles mit in die Analyse einbezogen. Bei der Einordnung in CMIP6 wird unterschieden zwischen dem gesamten verfügbaren Ensemble und einem Sub-Ensemble für das Randbedingungen für dynamische Regionalmodelle vorliegen, um eine erste Einschätzung für das potentielle EURO-CORDEX-CMIP6 Ensemble zu bekommen. </p> <p>Die Ergebnisse zeigen für die Änderung im Zeitraum 2070-2099 im Vergleich zu 1981-2010 für die Temperatur und Szenario RCP26/SSP126 (RCP85/SSP585) einen vergleichbaren mittleren Anstieg von ~1 K (3.5K) für das EURO-CORDEX Ensemble und das CMIP5 Ensemble, wobei das CMIP5 Ensemble eine deutlich größere Bandbreite aufweist.  Der mittlere Anstieg im CMIP6 Ensemble liegt etwas höher und ist sehr ausgeprägt im Sommer mit ~2K (>5K). Die Änderungen des Niederschlags zeigen im Mittel eine Zunahme im Winter, etwas ausgeprägter in CMIP6 als in CMIP5 und EURO-CORDEX, im Sommer nimmt der Niederschlag im Mittel ab, die einzelnen Simulationen jedes Ensembles zeigen Zu- und Abnahmen. Das CMIP6 Ensemble für SSP585 bildet eine Ausnahme mit ausschließlich Abnahmen des Niederschlags.</p> <p>Ein weiteres Ziel der Analyse ist neben der Einordnung der verschiedenen Ensemble eine Untersuchung der Unterschiede, wenn man a) klassische Zeitscheiben definiert durch Klimanormalperioden aus unterschiedlichen Szenarien betrachtet, oder b) politisch motivierte globale Temperaturschwellen wie 1,5°C, 2°C und 3°C Erwärmung gegenüber der vorindustriellen Periode betrachtet. Dabei wird die Temperaturschwelle analog einer Klimanormalperiode durch ein 30-jähriges gleitendes Mittel aus den globalen Temperturänderungszeitreihen der Globalmodellsimulationen bestimmt.</p>

Empfehlungen für die Charakterisierung und Benennung ausgewählter IPCC Klimaszenarien

<p>Eine zentrale Aufgabe von Klimaforschung und Klimakommunikation ist die Beschreibung möglicher Entwicklungspfade des künftigen Klimas sowie der antreibenden Kräfte. Diese Entwicklungspfade werden Klimaszenarien genannt. Klimaszenarien wiederum basieren auf Szenarien möglicher Entwicklung von Gesellschaft, Technologie und Ressourcennutzung, um daraus die resultierenden Emissionen von Treibhausgasen abzuschätzen. </p> <p>In der Nutzerkommunikation werden die Klimaszenarien des Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in der Regel mit prägnanten Namen beschrieben. Im deutschsprachigen Raum wurden in den letzten Jahren jedoch verschiedene Namen für dieselben Klimaszenarien genutzt. Dies führte oft zu Irritationen und Verwechslungen.</p> <p>Um dem entgegenzuwirken hat nun eine Arbeitsgruppe der drei deutschsprachigen Wetterdienste, Bundes- und Landeseinrichtungen und aus der Klimaforschung erstmals eine Empfehlung für eine einheitliche Benennung, Beschreibung und farbliche Kennzeichnung einer Auswahl von Klimaszenarien des IPCC vorgelegt. Dieses betrifft die Szenarien der CMIP6<sup>1</sup>-Generation die aus zwei sich gegenseitig ergänzenden Komponenten bestehen: den Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) und den Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). Im speziellen hier die Szenarien SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 und SSP5-8.5. Dieses sind die Szenarien die zum einen von den Modellgruppen für Modellsimulationen genutzt wurden und oder in der politischen Diskussion regelmäßig besprochen werden.</p> <p>Dieser Beitrag stellt die Empfehlungen der Arbeitsgruppe für eine einheitliche Sprach- und Kommunikationsregelung  der fünf derzeit am häufigsten genutzten Klimaszenarien im deutschsprachigen Raum vor.</p> <p><sup>1</sup> CMIP6: Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6</p>

Agrarmeteorologische Indikatoren im Klimaatlas des Deutschen Wetterdienstes

<p>Die Abhängigkeit der Landwirtschaft vom Wettergeschehen ist regional sehr unterschiedlich und kann die Ernteerträge stark beeinflussen. Daher ist es wichtig, die zukünftigen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die Landwirtschaft in Deutschland abschätzen zu können. Der Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) berechnet hierfür agrarmeteorologische Indikatoren für verschiedene Klimaszenarien und stellt diese der Allgemeinheit zur Verfügung. Diese ausgewählten Indikatoren sollen einen Überblick zu den drängendsten Klimawandelfolgen für die Landwirtschaft geben und als Entscheidungshilfe dienen. Sie umfassen Analysen zu Veränderungen des Vegetationsbeginns, der Waldbrandgefahr, Indikatoren zu Anbaubedingungen, bis hin zu Bodenfeuchteprognosen mit aufwendiger Anschlussmodellierung des Wasserhaushalts.</p> <p>Als Grundlage für diese Indikatoren wurden die im Rahmen des BMVI-Expertennetzwerkes zusammengestellten Klimaprojektionen des DWD-Referenz-Ensembles verwendet. Diese Modellläufe beruhen auf den Ergebnissen des Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) und werden als regionalisierte und Bias-adjustierte Klimamodellberechnungen für Deutschland bereitgestellt. Die Prognosen der repräsentativen Klimaszenarien basieren hierbei auf Annahmen über zukünftige gesellschaftliche und technologische Entwicklungen sowie die daraus resultierenden Treibhausgasemissionen. Um die damit verbundenen Unsicherheiten zu kommunizieren, wird die statistische Bandbreite über Perzentile der jeweiligen Modellläufe angegeben. Die aufbereiteten Ergebnisse werden anschließend im Klimaatlas-Portal veröffentlicht.</p> <p>Grundsätzlich zeigen die agrarmeteorologischen Indikatoren deutliche Veränderungen der Anbaumöglichkeiten und die Zunahme von verschiedenen Extremereignissen, wie z. B. Dürren. Diese Veränderungen sind insbesondere in den Szenarien mit einer konstanten Zunahme der Treibhausgasemission stärker ausgeprägt, als wenn die Weltbevölkerung umfassende Klimaschutzmaßnahmen umsetzen würde. Dieses Verhältnis ist stabil und zeigt sich bei allen untersuchten Indikatoren sowohl für die nahe (2060), als auch für die ferne (2100) Zukunft. Diese Auswertungen zeigen, dass der Klimawandel einen deutlichen Effekt auf die Landwirtschaft in Deutschland haben wird. Die prognostizierten Veränderungen der Rahmenbedingungen können daher genutzt werden, um frühzeitig eine geeignete Strategie mit Anpassungsmaßnahmen zu entwickeln, um die Landwirtschaft auf den Klimawandel vorzubereiten.</p>

Evaluating the large-scale hydrological cycle response within the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project Phase 2 (PlioMIP2) ensemble

The mid-Pliocene (∼3 Ma) is one of the most recent warm periods with high CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere and resulting high temperatures, and it is often cited as an analog for near-term future climate change. Here, we apply a moisture budget analysis to investigate the response of the large-scale hydrological cycle at low latitudes within a 13-model ensemble from the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project Phase 2 (PlioMIP2). The results show that increased atmospheric moisture content within the mid-Pliocene ensemble (due to the thermodynamic effect) results in wetter conditions over the deep tropics, i.e., the Pacific intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the Maritime Continent, and drier conditions over the subtropics. Note that the dynamic effect plays a more important role than the thermodynamic effect in regional precipitation minus evaporation (PmE) changes (i.e., northward ITCZ shift and wetter northern Indian Ocean). The thermodynamic effect is offset to some extent by a dynamic effect involving a northward shift of the Hadley circulation that dries the deep tropics and moistens the subtropics in the Northern Hemisphere (i.e., the subtropical Pacific). From the perspective of Earth's energy budget, the enhanced southward cross-equatorial atmospheric transport (0.22 PW), induced by the hemispheric asymmetries of the atmospheric energy, favors an approximately 1∘ northward shift of the ITCZ. The shift of the ITCZ reorganizes atmospheric circulation, favoring a northward shift of the Hadley circulation. In addition, the Walker circulation consistently shifts westward within PlioMIP2 models, leading to wetter conditions over the northern Indian Ocean. The PlioMIP2 ensemble highlights that an imbalance of interhemispheric atmospheric energy during the mid-Pliocene could have led to changes in the dynamic effect, offsetting the thermodynamic effect and, hence, altering mid-Pliocene hydroclimate.

Stratospheric Ozone Response to Sulfate Aerosol and Solar Dimming Climate Interventions based on the G6 Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) Simulations

This study assesses the impacts of sulfate aerosol intervention (SAI) and solar dimming on stratospheric ozone based on the G6 Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) experiments, called G6sulfur and G6solar. For G6sulfur the stratospheric sulfate aerosol burden is increased to reflect some of the incoming solar radiation back into space in order to cool the surface climate, while for G6solar the global solar constant is reduced to achieve the same goal. The high emissions scenario SSP5-8.5 is used as the baseline experiment and surface temperature from the medium emission scenario SSP2-4.5 is the target. Based on three out of six Earth System Models (ESMs) that include interactive stratospheric chemistry, we find significant differences in the ozone distribution between G6solar and G6sulfur experiments compared to SSP5-8.5 and SSP2-4.5, which differ by both region and season. Both SAI and solar dimming methods reduce incoming solar insolation and result in tropospheric temperatures comparable to SSP2-4.5 conditions. G6sulfur increases the concentration of absorbing sulfate aerosols in the stratosphere, which increases lower tropical stratospheric temperatures by between 5 to 13 K for six different ESMs, leading to changes in stratospheric transport. The increase of the aerosol burden also increases aerosol surface area density, which is important for heterogeneous chemical reactions. The resulting changes in ozone include a significant reduction of total column ozone (TCO) in the Southern Hemisphere polar region in October of 10 DU at the onset and up to 20 DU by the end of the century. The relatively small reduction in TCO for the multi-model mean in the first two decades results from variations in the required sulfur injections in the models and differences in the complexity of the chemistry schemes, with no significant ozone loss for 2 out of 3 models. The decrease in the second half of the 21st century counters increasing TCO between SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 due to the super-recovery resulting from increasing greenhouse gases. In contrast, in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) high latitudes, only a small initial decline in TCO is simulated, with little change in TCO by the end of the century compared to SSP5-8.5. All models consistently simulate an increase in TCO in the NH mid-latitudes up to 20 DU compared to SSP5-8.5, in addition to 20 DU increase resulting from increasing greenhouse gases between SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. G6solar counters zonal wind and tropical upwelling changes between SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 but does not change stratospheric temperatures. Solar dimming results in little change in TCO compared to SSP5-8.5 and does not counter the effects of the ozone super-recovery. Only in the tropics, G6solar results in an increase of TCO of up to 8 DU compared to SSP2-4.5, which may counter the projected reduction due to climate change in the high forcing future scenario. This work identifies differences in the response of SAI and solar dimming on ozone, which are at least partly due to differences and shortcomings in the complexity of aerosol microphysics, chemistry, and the description of ozone photolysis in the models. It also identifies that solar dimming, if viewed as an analog to SAI using a predominantly scattering aerosol, would, for the most part, not counter the potential harmful increase in TCO beyond historical values induced by increasing greenhouse gases.
