Ethylene oxide oligomers and polymers, free and tethered to gold nanoparticles, were dispersed in blue phase liquid crystals (BPLC). Gold nanospheres (AuNPs) and nanorods (AuNRs) were functionalized with thiolated ethylene oxide ligands with molecular weights ranging from 200 to 5000 g/mol. The BPLC mixture (ΔTBP ~6 °C) was based on the mesogenic acid heterodimers, n-hexylbenzoic acid (6BA) and n-trans-butylcyclohexylcarboxylic acid (4-BCHA) with the chiral dopant (R)-2-octyl 4-[4-(hexyloxy)benzoyloxy]benzoate. The lowest molecular weight oligomer lowered and widened the BP range but adding AuNPs functionalized with the same ligand had little effect. Higher concentrations or molecular weights of the ligands, free or tethered to the AuNPs, completely destabilized the BP. Mini-AuNRs functionalized with the same ligands lowered and widened the BP temperature range with longer mini-AuNRs having a larger effect. In contrast to the AuNPs, the mini-AuNRs with the higher molecular weight ligands widened rather than destabilized the BP, though the lowest MW ligand yielded the largest BP range, (ΔTBP > 13 °C). The different effects on the BP may be due to the AuNPs accumulating at singular defect sites whereas the mini-AuNRs, with diameters smaller than that of the disclination lines, can more efficiently fill in the BP defects.

Abstract In the present work we report a simple, fast, reproducible and cheap methodology for SERS substrate fabrication of silver dendritic nanostructures (prepared by electrodeposition) decorated with gold nanospheres by electrophoretic deposition. This is the first report where a metal dendritic nanostructure has been decorated with another type of metal nanoparticles by this technique. The decorated nanostructures were used directly as SERS substrate using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as analyte. The objective of the decoration is to create more hot-spots in order to detect the analyte in a lower concentration. Decorated nanodendrites had a detection limit one million times lower than bare silver nanodendrites and all the substrates showed an increase in the Raman intensity at concentrations below 1 nM; because this concentration corresponds to the threshold for the formation of a monolayer resulting in a triple mechanism of intensity increase, namely electric field, chemical factor and hot-spots. 4-ATP was detected in zeptomolar concentration, which is below 1 ppq, corresponding to an analytical enhancement factor (AEF) in the order of 1015.

Cancer light-triggered hyperthermia mediated by nanomaterials aims to eliminate cancer cells by inducing localized temperature increases to values superior to 42 °C, upon irradiation with a laser. Among the different nanomaterials with photothermal capacity, the gold-based nanoparticles have been widely studied due to their structural plasticity and advantageous physicochemical properties. Herein, a novel and straightforward methodology was developed to produce gold nanoclusters coated with mesoporous silica (AuMSS), using glutathione (GSH) to mediate the formation of the gold clusters. The obtained results revealed that GSH is capable of triggering and control the aggregation of gold nanospheres, which enhanced the absorption of radiation in the NIR region of the spectra. Moreover, the produced AuMSS nanoclusters mediated a maximum temperature increase of 20 °C and were able to encapsulate a drug model (acridine orange). In addition, these AuMSS nanoclusters were also biocompatible with both healthy (fibroblasts) and carcinogenic (cervical cancer) cells, at a maximum tested concentration of 200 μg/mL. Nevertheless, the AuMSS nanoclusters’ NIR light-triggered heat generation successfully reduced the viability of cervical cancer cells by about 80%. This confirms the potential of the AuMSS nanoclusters to be applied in cancer therapy, namely as theragnostic agents.

In the present investigation, fucoxanthin—one of the major pigments in diatoms—has been extracted from Nanofrustulum shiloi SZCZM1342, and its reducing efficiency in the biogenesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) was checked. Fucoxanthin extracted from golden-brown cells of N. shiloi was compared to the healthy, growing biomass of N. shiloi and standard fucoxanthin after separate exposure to 25 mg L−1 aqueous hydrogen tetrachloroaurate solutions at room temperature. Isolated and standard fucoxanthin were found to be able to reduce gold ions within 12 h whereas, the whole biomass turned pink in color after 72 h of reaction. The synthesized particles were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV–vis spectroscopy of purple-colored suspensions showed the absorption band at approximately 520–545 nm, indicating a strong positive signal for GNP synthesis. The SEM study revealed the deposition of GNPs on siliceous frustules of metal-treated diatom cells. The TEM analysis confirmed the GNPs synthesized by whole biomass are triangular, spherical and hexagonal in nature, whereas the particles produced by extracted and standard fucoxanthin are all spherical in nature. This study demonstrates the involvement of fucoxanthin in the reduction of gold ions and subsequent production of gold nanospheres.
