This study is legal research aiming to find out the essence of Divine Principles in Indonesian Contract Law from the review of the Natural Law theory, the Sunt-Servanda theory, the Awareness and Legal Obedience Grundnorm theory, and Truth theory. This research reveals that the Divine Principle's essence is the most fundamental principle or guideline derived from God but exists in humans, aiming to find the truth and regulate the parties in making agreements. The application of the Divine Principle aims to find the truth and regulate the parties in the agreement's field. Indonesian citizens could realize and practice the Precepts of Godhead in their agreement activities. In establishing the agreement, the parties are applying the teachings of their respective religions. This study reveals that the Divine principle needs to be incorporated into one of the upcoming National Agreement Laws principles, especially in the contract born because of the agreement. This study maintains that the divine principle can be applied comprehensively for Indonesian citizens who are parties to the agreement, not only limited to the Indonesian Muslim citizens.

Architects and designers are obligated to think comprehensively to create aesthetically pleasing buildings together with functional features. The modern movement of architecture represents a dramatic movement in the buildings design to create a different functional and new architecture. There is a debate about the priority of beauty (aesthetics) and functionality (ethics) in this architectural style and leads to ambiguity in evaluating ethics and aesthetics. Hence, the study aims to understand the relationship between ethics and aesthetics value in architecture's modern movement. This study hypothesizes that there is a significant relationship between ethical and aesthetical values through the functionality of modern architecture. The study has proposed a conceptual model to be applied in future studies on different case studies. This is through assessment tools to evaluate the presence of ethics and aesthetics in modern architectural style.

AbstractIt is a Preface to Volume 9:3/4 that has brought a renewed focus to the role of truth conceptions in frameworks of semantics and logic. Jan Woleński is known due to his works on epistemological aspects of logic and his systematization of semantic truth theory. He became the successor and the worthy continuer of prominent Polish logicians: Alfred Tarski and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. This volume is collected on the 80th anniversary of Woleński’s birth and draws together new research papers devoted to judgments and truth. These papers take measure of the scope and impact of Woleński’s views on truth conceptions, and present new contributions to the field of philosophy and logic.

Davidson’s first lecture begins with a discussion of the theoretical importance of the notion of speaking the truth, continues with a characterization of the structure of an adequate semantic theory, and concludes with some remarks on the connections between truth-theoretic semantics and the underlying levels of representation posited by syntacticians in the generative tradition. What is special about speaking the truth, Davidson claims, is that anyone who is competent with a language and who knows the relevant facts about the world is in a position to know whether a speaker of that language speaks the truth on any given occasion. It is no surprise, then, that truth is central to Davidson’s conception of semantics: for much of the lecture, he defends the claim that a Tarskian truth theory can serve as the basis for a theory of meaning. At the end of the lecture, he suggests that the logical forms associated with sentences by an empirically supported Tarskian truth theory for a language can be identified with the Chomskyan deep structures of those sentences.

Donald Davidson’s 1970 Locke Lectures appear in print for the first time in this volume, accompanied by an introduction highlighting their significance as a snapshot of his evolving views in the philosophy of language and describing their relationship to the work he published during his lifetime. The lectures comprise an invaluable historical document that illuminates how Davidson was thinking about the theory of meaning, the role of a truth theory therein, the ontological commitments of a truth theory, the notion of logical form, and so on, at a pivotal moment in the development of his thought. Unlike Davidson’s previously published work, they are written so as to be presented to an audience as a fully organized and coherent exposition of his program in the philosophy of language. Had these lectures been widely available in the years following 1970, the reception of Davidson’s work, especially in the philosophy of language, might have been very different. Given the systematic nature of the presentation of Davidson’s semantic program in these lectures, it is hoped that they will be of use to those encountering his thought for the first time.

Davidson begins his second lecture by arguing that, because the truth of a sentence must be relativized to a speaker and time, a truth-theory for a language will require an ontology containing at least sentences, speakers, and times. He then contrasts his preferred approach to semantics with a number of alternatives, including fact-based theories of truth, substitutional theories of quantification, and what he calls the “double-negation” theory of truth. He argues that, given certain plausible assumptions, it can be shown that fact-based theories are committed to the implausible conclusion that there is only one fact. Drawing on reasoning originally due to John Wallace, he then argues that the substitutional account of quantification cannot be correct either. He finds the “double-negation” theory equally defective, as it fails to account for sentences in which truth is predicated of named propositions.

This article attempts to reveal epistemological dimension of Musta’in Syafi’i’s interpretation in his work Tafsir al-Qur’an Aktual. It employs the perspective of truth theory which has been widely known within the philosophy of science. As a product of interpretation, Musta’in’s work has been a result of scientific work whose validity can be critically evaluated on the basis of three standards of truth, namely coherence, correspondence, and pragmatic aspect covered in the work. The study finds that the validity of interpretation of Musta’in is measurable. The measurability of this work can be seen within its coherence in presenting propositions systematically, logically, and consistently. The coherence of propositions and argumentative facts show us that Musta’in’s work is correspondently accurate. Musta’in’s work, moreover, is pragmatically advantageous as it corresponds to scientific expediency when it worthily contributes to provide the society solutions and answers to their social problems and other aspects regarding Islamic laws.
