This work presents a new unit cell electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) design based on HoneyComb geometry (HCPBG). The new HCPBG takes a uniplanar geometry (UCPBG—uniplanar compact PBG) as a reference and follows similar design methods for defining geometric parameters. The new structure’s advantages consist of reduced occupied printed circuit board area and flexible rejection band properties. In addition, rotation and slight geometry modification in the HCPBG cell allow changing the profile of the attenuation frequency range. This paper also presents a reconfigurable unit cell HCPBG filter strategy, for which the resonance center frequency is shifted by changing the gap capacitance with the assistance of varactor diodes. The HCPBG filter and reconfiguration behavior is demonstrated through electromagnetic (EM) simulations over the FR1 band of the 5G communication network. Intelligent communication systems can use the reconfiguration feature to select the optimal operating frequency for maximum attenuation of unwanted or interfering signals, such as harmonics or intermodulation products.

In this study, a new concept for a Ka-band 5G communication tunable reflector metasurface (MS) for beam steering at 28 GHz is proposed. Varactor diodes are used as the tunability component of each unit cell of this MS. Significant improvements in beam steering and bandwidth performance were achieved using this new concept referred to as the stripes configuration. Several different geometries of unit cells arranged in stripes were designed to achieve better performance in directionality, gain, sidelobe level (SLL), and bandwidth in the stripes configuration. Simulation results for a three-stripe MS with different unit cells in each stripe showed better performance in the phase dynamic range and reduced reflectance losses compared to a typical one-stripe MS. The simulation results showed a significant improvement of 3 dB, depending on the steering angle in reflectance gain, compared to a uniform MS (one stripe). Furthermore, a significant improvement of approximately 50% in the accuracy of the steering angle for different operating frequencies was demonstrated. Manufacturing considerations are discussed in this study.

The active control to the local resonant mode of metasurface is a promising route for improving the operation bandwidth limitation of metasurface. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrated the active tunabilities in a frequency-agile Fano-resonant metasurface. The metasurface with a pair of asymmetric split ring resonators is integrated with double varactor diodes for active control of the sharp Fano resonance. It is found that the sharp Fano-type spectrum appears due to the near-field interferences between the collective electric and magnetic dipole modes. The physical insight is revealed through local field analysis, multipole decomposition and temporal coupled-mode theory. It is also found that the metasurface can be employed as a broadband and unity modulator. Hopefully, our results could inspire sophisticated electrically controlled photonic devices with novel functions.

Abstract In this paper, a new reconfigurable power divider (PD) is proposed to improve the efficiency of the three-way Doherty power amplifier (DPA). The conventional λ/4 transmission line is replaced by the proposed reconfigurable PD in the input of peaking amplifier, where the 90° phase shift and impedance matching can be achieved. Furthermore, the output power distribution ratio (PDR) can be continuously adjusted in a large range by adjusting the reverse voltage of the varactor diodes. Therefore, the reconfigurable PD with the best PDR can assign input power to the peaking amplifier. Experiment results show that the maximum measured power added efficiency (PAE) of the proposed three-way DPA is 49%, which is improved by 5% compared with conventional three-way DPA.

An electrically tunable, textile-based metamaterial (MTM) is presented in this work. The proposed MTM unit cell consists of a decagonal-shaped split-ring resonator and a slotted ground plane integrated with RF varactor diodes. The characteristics of the proposed MTM were first studied independently using a single unit cell, prior to different array combinations consisting of 1 × 2, 2 × 1, and 2 × 2 unit cells. Experimental validation was conducted for the fabricated 2 × 2 unit cell array format. The proposed tunable MTM array exhibits tunable left-handed characteristics for both simulation and measurement from 2.71 to 5.51 GHz and provides a tunable transmission coefficient of the MTM. Besides the left-handed properties within the frequency of interest (from 1 to 15 GHz), the proposed MTM also exhibits negative permittivity and permeability from 8.54 to 10.82 GHz and from 10.6 to 13.78 GHz, respectively. The proposed tunable MTM could operate in a dynamic mode using a feedback system for different microwave wearable applications.
