Electrolyte disorders are a frequent finding in cancer patients. In the majority of cases the etiologies of such disorders are common to all cancer types (i.e. diuretic-induced hyponatremia or hypokalemia). Sometimes, electrolyte disorders are caused by paraneoplastic syndromes or are due to cancer therapy. Potassium is one of the most important electrolytes of the human body since it is involved in the regulation of muscle contraction, maintenance of the integrity of the skeleton, blood pressure and nerve transmission as well as in the normal function of cells. Potassium homeostasis is strictly regulated since the gap between the recommended daily dietary intake (120 mEq/day) and the levels stored in the extracellular fluid (around 70 mEq) is huge. Alterations of potassium homeostasis are frequent in cancer patients as well alterations in potassium channels, the transmembrane proteins that mediate potassium fluxes within the cells. The present chapter is focused on the clinical significance of potassium homeostasis and potassium channels in patients with solid tumors.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries, such as Australia. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two carotenoids found in the macular region of the eye. Studies have shown that an intake of 10 mg and 2 mg per day of lutein and zeaxanthin, respectively, can reduce the rate of progression of AMD. The supply of these carotenoids can only be met through dietary sources or supplements, as these compounds cannot be synthesised by humans. Although lutein is relatively abundant in dietary sources, zeaxanthin has limited sources. In this study, eight orange and three red capsicum varieties were analysed for their carotenoid profiles by UHPLC-DAD-APCI-MS. It was observed that the principal carotenoid for seven of the orange varieties was zeaxanthin, and capsanthin for the three red varieties. One orange variety, which had a darker orange hue, had capsanthin and violaxanthin as its principal carotenoids instead of zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin concentration (the principal carotenoid) in the seven orange varieties varied from 2.6 ± 0.5 mg/100 g to 25.27 ± 9.4 mg/100 FW, suggesting that as little as 7 g of the high-zeaxanthin line could meet the recommended daily dietary intake of 2 mg/person/day.

Abstract Objectives Self-monitoring daily dietary intake is recommended for weight loss and weight loss maintenance. However, current online platforms and applications are often burdensome, which may limit use. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the accuracy of a new application designed to self-monitor dietary intake using natural spoken language (COCO; The Conversational Calorie Counter). Methods A total of 35 participants were enrolled in this pilot study. Participants were asked to record daily dietary intake using the COCO application for a period of at least five days. Two 24-hour dietary recalls were conducted during this time, between day three and day five, and served as the reference method for evaluating total energy intake (TEI; measured in kcal). Mean two-day energy intake was calculated for each assessment method for the days when the 24-hr recall and COCO data were collected. Self-reported TEI from COCO were compared to estimates obtained from the 24-hour dietary recalls by a paired samples t-test and a Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results On average, participants consumed three meals a day and recorded six days of food intake days with COCO (range: 4 to 10 days). The mean TEI was not significantly different between the two methods (1902 ± 621 kcal by 24-hour dietary recall and 1988 ± 1033 kcal by COCO, P = 0.59). There was a significant correlation between mean TEI measured with the two methods (r = 0.45; P = 0.006). In addition, a strong correlation was observed between the number of food items logged in COCO and those recalled in the 24-hour diet recalls (r = 0.82; P >0.0001). Completion of the exit survey by 28 participants indicated that 43% would definitely or probably use the application again. Conclusions These results suggest that natural spoken language technology may have utility in applications to self-monitor food intake. Additional research is required to fully elucidate the validity of COCO in estimating dietary intake. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) supplies nourishment to about half of the population of the world's inhabitants. Of them, more than 2 billion people suffer from "hidden hunger" in which they are unable to meet the recommended nutrients or micronutrients from their daily dietary intake. Bio-fortification refers to developing micronutrient-rich diet foods using traditional breeding methods and modern biotechnology, a promising approach to nutrition enrichment as part of an integrated strategy for food systems. To improve the profile of rice grain for the biofortification related traits, understanding the genetics of important biofortification traits is required. Moreover, these attributes are quantitative in nature and are influenced by several genes and environmental variables. In the course of past decades, several endeavours such, as finding the important quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for improving the nutrient profile of rice seeds were successfully undertaken. In this review, we have presented the information regarding the QTLs identified for the biofortification traits in the rice.

There were studied basic somatometric, hemodynamic indices and daily dietary intake in students. There were analyzed the correlation relationships between the most important and informative indices. There was noted the lack of reliable link between the attained body height and weight with those at birth. There was shown an impact of the separate components of the diet on the morphological status of the body and the functioning of the circulatory system. There were established gender features consisting in the presence of strong correlations in a group of young men. There were revealed intra-individual differences of specific indices most pronounced in data of the daily intake.

However, current tracking methods are often burdensome and result in short-term use. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the accuracy of a new application designed to self-monitor dietary intake using natural spoken language (COCO; The Conversational Calorie Counter). Methods A total of 14 participants were recruited for the pilot study. They were instructed to record daily dietary intake using the COCO application for at least five consecutive days. Two unscheduled 24-hour dietary recalls were conducted between day 3 and day 5 as the reference method for evaluating total energy intake (TEI). The two-day energy estimates were averaged for each assessment method. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to assess the validity of the COCO application. Estimates of TEI from COCO were compared to the 24-hour dietary recall by a paired samples t-test. Results Participants were primarily female (86%), with an average body mass index of 22.2 ± 1.8 kg/m2 (mean ± standard deviation). On average, participants consumed three daily meals and recorded dietary intake for six days using the COCO application. The average TEI was 1782 ± 773 kcal for all recorded days (range: 4 to 10). The mean TEI measured by 24-hour dietary recall was 1791 ± 862 kcal, and mean TEI measured by COCO for the corresponding days was 1818 ± 916 kcal. We observed a significant correlation between the assessment methods (r = 0.58; P = 0.03), and there was no significant difference in TEI estimates from COCO compared to the 24-hour recall (P = 0.90). Conclusions These results suggest that natural spoken language technology can be used in applications that facilitate self-monitoring of food intake to support weight management and the prevention of noncommunicable diseases. The significant correlation between estimates of TEI from COCO and the 24-hour dietary recall indicates the potential validity of this novel approach for capturing dietary data and assessing energy intake. In the present study, investigation of fourteen traditional and most commonly used Indian staple grain flour types (viz. wheat, white rice, processed little millet, maize, all-purpose/refined wheat flour, chickpea flour, toasted gram flour, little millet, quinoa, soybean, white millet, pearl millet, semolina/cream of wheat and finger millet) was undertaken for the assessment of 3 major bioactive aglycone forms of isoflavone (IF): daidzein (DI), glycitein (GY) and genistein (GN), with a special interest on the effect of sprouting on total and individual IF components. The obtained results showed that the content and composition of total IF were negligible among all the investigated flours except for soybean, wherein detectable total (227 mg kg-1) and individual IF (45, 129 and 53 mg kg-1 for DI, GY and GN respectively) components were observed. From soybean mature seeds to sprouts formation with ~80% germination rate at a pilot-scale, a 31% increase in total IF (298 mg kg-1), characterised by an individual and respective increment of 30% (58 mg kg-1), 25% (161 mg kg-1) and 48% (78 mg kg-1) in corresponding DI, GY and GN components, was observed. The current results demonstrated that for the Indian scenario, contribution of aforementioned grains, other than soybean in daily dietary intake of IF is negligible and sprouting represents an effective way to enhance the endogenous IF content.
