AbstractA strengths-based approach to education is essential for successful school development in culturally diverse schools. Chapter 7 reflects that education lies in the pedagogical relations and provocations into the self-realizations and growth of young people. In this arena, provocation refers to intentions to provoke thoughts, ideas, and actions that help students to learn and grow. A provocation should be grounded in the child’s cultural background strengths. We explicitly worked with school teams to recognize the equal value of different cultures in their students’ ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and to lead in culturally responsive ways with regards to pedagogy, curriculum, data-analysis, education and community engagement. We drew on research to include positive perspectives of parents and families, communication of high expectations, learning within the context of culture, student-centered and culturally mediated instruction, reshaping the curriculum, and teacher as facilitator. Thus, culturally relevant teaching requires teachers to embrace diversity, build on strengths, and recognize that students learn in a variety of ways. It is the job of the leader to help teachers gain an understanding of those cultures, and how to incorporate that into their classrooms. Sample activities and case studies expand the concepts.

This paper is devoted to the contribution of the Ukrainian-Polish pedagogical relations towards the improvement in the quality of modern education, building a common European home. Its author proves that past experiences play an important role in thorough understanding of contemporary processes and interpreting previous achievements in the contemporary intercultural pedagogical space., The figure of Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi, a Ukrainian pedagogue, and his creative heritage as well as his relations with the Polish colleagues in the 50s and 60s of 20th century serve as an example. The influence of Janusz Korczak, the famous Polish educator, on his outlook are also stressed. The further development of the Ukrainian-Polish relations and the mutual influences over the next decades are described. This paper constitutes an analysis of the popularisation of his ideas by the greatest Polish teachers and researchers, such as Tadeusz Wiloсh, Aleksander Lewin, Wincenty Okoń, Marian Bybluk, or Bogusław Sliwerski. The personalistic approach is emphasized, allowing for consideration of mutual processes in the light of particular individuals’ destiny and their educational heritage as an intercultural space component.

The rapid development of technologies, the transition of educational and pedagogical activities to the online format and the integration of digital solutions into educational reality have led to the need for a systematic rethinking and analysis of the model of the language learning process. Along with the unique opportunities that opened up, participants of the educational process faced difficulties that arose, inter alia, due to the specificity of the interaction of different generations in one educational space. The new modality of socio-pedagogical relations also affected the language education: NBICS technologies, media convergence and digital reality are phenomena that cannot be ignored when designing the educational process.

This paper engages with the artistic practice and work of Vanessa Dion Fletcher (Potawatomi and Lenapé) from my perspective as a non-Indigenous academic and curator. Dion Fletcher and I have worked together over the past several years through discussions about her work, studio visits, and various events. In her art practice, Dion Fletcher uses porcupine quills and menstrual blood to inquire into a range of issues and concepts including Indigenous language revitalization, feminist Indigenous corporeality, Land as pedagogy, decolonization, and neurodiversity. In particular her work confronts the ways that Indigeneity, the queer and gendered body, and disability are rendered expendable. In this paper I engage with Dylan Robinson’s “sovereign sense”: a transcorporeal mode of perception that is affective, land-based, and formed through relations between human and non-humans. Dion Fletcher’s work makes palpable this sense of sovereignty through its unruly and mutating feltness. Further, her work makes visible feminist Indigenous artistic acts of resurgence alongside the frictions at the intersections of settler colonialism and disability. Following Karyn Recollet, I contend that Dion Fletcher’s work activates an Indigenous affective experience of futurity and creative intimacy that in turn imagines disability and Indigeneity as sites through which new pedagogical relations can be formed.

Abstract: The aim of this contribution is to analyse the relationship between fear and freedom in educational settings. To this purpose, we explain our concept of feelings and define fear as an emotional and existential feeling. This is followed by considerations that discuss the productivity of fear in capitalistic modes of production. On this base, we will develop an argumentation that focuses on the dialectical movement between freedom and fear in order to address the pedagogical relations of our subject. In our concluding commentary we draft a pedagogical perspective on emancipation and reason as an inconclusive mediation of the dialectical movement of fear and freedom.

This article explores the relations between teachers’ visual cartographies and oral narratives to better understand the spatial and temporal relations on teacher learning. It builds on a research project whose main questions were: 1) How and where do secondary school teachers learn to teach? 2) What are the consequences of this learning in their pedagogical relations and their students’ learning processes and results? Since narrative research has been a common way of approaching the subject and have led to an emphasis on learning as a journey across contexts and over time, some of its contributions to explore teachers’ learning paths are theoretically discussed, and visual methods, particularly cartographies, are also examined. Furthermore, the article presents the analysis of cartographies and video recordings of 29 secondary school teachers focusing on the interactions in different spaces and moments in time described by them. Findings suggest that learning to be a teacher may happen in interactions with objects, people and spaces beyond the boundaries of school, university and formal places of training and learning. They also show that the rhizomatic character of the cartographies may not prevent teleological thinking or the idea that any kind of learning is purposeful. Finally, this paper concludes that teachers’ learning does not fit the representational frame that distinguishes between formal contents and leisure activities, classrooms and private spaces, lessons and bodies, emotions and knowledge.
