Background: Traffic-related pollution is associated with the onset of asthma and the development of different phenotypes of asthma. Few studies have investigated the association between traffic proximity and late-onset of asthma (LOA) and early-onset asthma (EOA). This study was conducted to investigate the associations of LOA phenotypes with a function of the distance between residence and heavy traffic roads (HTRs).Methods: The study group consisted of 280 patients who were (LOA: 78.4%) recruited consecutively from a pay-for-performance asthma program to clarify the patient characteristics and proximity to HTRs within 1,000 m from their residences between EOA and LOA in three urban centers in Taiwan. The subsequent analysis focused on patients with LOA (n = 210) linking phenotypes and distance to HTRs.Results: Subjects with LOA tended to be older than those with EOA and had shorter asthma duration, poorer lung function, lower atopy, and less exposure to fumes or dust at home. Patients with LOA were more likely than those with EOA to live within 900 m of two or more HTRs (14.3 vs. 3.4%, p = 0.02). Among patients with LOA, minimum distance to an HTR was negatively associated with numbers of specific IgE as well as positively associated with the age of onset and body weight significantly. A higher proportion of patients with atopy (26.3 vs. 20.6%, p = 0.001. odds ratio [OR]: 2.82) and anxiety/depression (21.0 vs. 18.1%, p = 0.047. OR: 1.81) and a trend of lower proportion of patients with obese (5.7 vs. 12.4%, p = 0.075) were found to be living within 900 m from HTRs.Conclusions: Late-onset of asthma (LOA) tended to live in areas of higher HTR density compared to EOAs. Among patients with LOA living close to HTRs, the interaction between traffic-related pollution, allergy sensitization, and mood status were the factors associated with asthma onset early. Obesity may be the factor for later onset who live far from HTRs.

Driving restrictions are popular interventions in rapidly urbanizing developing countries. Their relatively inexpensive implementation appeals to the pressing need to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. Their effectiveness however, remains contested. Using high frequency data from the community-based driving directions app Waze, we evaluate the causal effect on traffic congestion of Lima's Pico y Placa driving restriction policy introduced in 2019. We find small improvements in traffic congestion for the policy's directly targeted areas. However, those improvements are offset by time and spatial spillovers in the opposite direction in the aggregate. Speed improved by 2 percent during the early weeks of the intervention, but this effect disappeared 16 weeks after the start of the policy. Moreover, traffic conditions worsened in adjacent areas and in hours outside the time schedule of the policy. In the aggregate, accounting for time and spatial spillovers, a simulation exercise suggests that overall welfare declined by 2 percent, mostly driven by the extensive margin (more roads becoming congested) outside the direct areas and hours targeted by the policy. The policy seems not only to have failed to achieve its intended benefits in terms of congestion, but also probably caused increases in traffic-related pollution. These results highlight the need for policy makers to take into account the overall impacts of driving restrictions policies before implementing them.

With the development of urbanisation and the increasing number of modern vehicles, traffic contamination has become an important source of environmental pollution. Most previous studies have focused on using roadside soil or plants to determine the spatial pattern of traffic pollutants along roads and the factors that influence this pattern, whereas few studies have reconstructed pollution histories caused by traffic using suitable methods. In this study, two gravity cores were obtained from Qianhu Lake, which is in the Zhongshan tourist area of Nanjing City and is distant from industrial areas. An accurate chronological framework covering the period from 1994 to 2014 was established using the correlation between the variation in grain size of the sediment cores and the variation in annual rainfall in Nanjing City. Moreover, magnetic and chemical parameters were also measured, and the results demonstrated that concentration-related magnetic parameters exhibited different correlations with different heavy metal concentrations. These correlations were significantly positive for Zn, Pb, and Co; weakly positive for Ni; absent for Cr; and negative for V. Combined with statistical data on industrial emissions and private cars in Nanjing City since 1994, the observed variations in magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetisation, saturation isothermal remanent magnetisation, Zn, Pb, and Co, were controlled by traffic activities in the tourist area but not by industry. Therefore, the variations in these parameters record the traffic pollution history of the study area. Combined with the obtained chronological framework, the traffic-related pollution history could be divided into two stages: 1) from 1994 to 2003, when traffic-related pollution became increasingly serious because of the exponential increase in the number of private cars and the prosperity of tourism; 2) from 2003 to 2014, when traffic-related pollution continuously increased but at a much slower rate than in stage 1. This slower rate of increase was probably related to the maximum carrying capacity of the tourist area and technological innovations in automobile manufacturing, as well as improvements in fuels.

Serious traffic-related pollution and high population density during the spring festival (Chinese new year) travel rush (SFTR) increases the travelers’ exposure risk to pollutants and biohazards. This study investigates personal exposure to particulate matter (PM) mass concentration when commuting in five transportation modes during and after the 2020 SFTR: China railway high-speed train (CRH train), subway, bus, car, and walking. The routes are selected between Nanjing and Xuzhou, two major transportation hubs in the Yangtze Delta. The results indicate that personal exposure levels to PM on the CRH train are the lowest and relatively stable, and so it is recommended to take the CRH train back home during the SFTR to reduce the personal PM exposure. The exposure level to PM2.5 during SFTR is twice as high as the average level of Asia, and it is higher than the WHO air quality guideline (AQG).

Industrial and urban dusts were characterized by investigating their magnetic properties. Topsoil composed of technogenic magnetic particles (TMP) originating from areas affected by three ironworks, street dust mainly composed of traffic-related pollution, and particulate matter (PM) from urban agglomeration in Warsaw, Poland were investigated. Several magnetic methods, namely magnetic susceptibility, thermomagnetic curves, hysteresis loops, decomposition of isothermal remanent magnetization acquisition curves, and first-order reversal curves, were performed to evaluate the magnetic fraction of dust. Magnetite was the main magnetic phase in all types of samples, with a small amount of high-coercive hematite within ironworks and street dust samples. Significant differences were observed in the domain structure (grain size) of industrial and traffic-related magnetic particles. The grain size of TMP obtained from steel production was in the range of 5–20 µm and was predominated by a mixture of single-domain (SD) and multidomain (MD) grains, with the prevalence of SD grains in the topsoil affected by Třinec ironwork. The traffic-related dust contained finer grains with a size of about 0.1 µm, which is characteristic of the pseudo-single-domain (PSD)/SD threshold. Street dusts were composed of a slightly higher proportion of MD grains, while PM also revealed the typical behavior of superparamagnetic particles.

Abstract The present study was designed to explore the possibility of roadside pollution screening using magnetic properties of topsoil samples in Daejeon, South Korea. Low-field magnetic susceptibility, frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility, susceptibility of anhysteretic remanent magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) acquisition and demagnetization, back-field IRM treatment, and thermal demagnetization of composite IRM were determined for roadside topsoil samples. Magnetic susceptibility measured on 238 samples from the upper 5 cm of the topsoils ranged from 8.6 to 82.5 × 10–5 SI with a mean of 28.3 ± 10.8 × 10–5 SI. The proximal zone, 55 m wide area situated on either side of the main street, exhibited an enhancement of magnetic susceptibility. In areas distant from the main street, low magnetic susceptibility (< 50 × 10–5 SI) was observed. The topsoil samples exhibited significant susceptibility contrasts, suggesting that two dimensional magnetic mapping was effective in identifying traffic-related pollution. A few magnetic hotspots with intensities of magnetic susceptibility near or over 50 × 10–5 SI might reflect the difference in topographic elevation and surface morphology. Among various IRM-related parameters, remanence of coercivity was most significant statistically. In most samples, IRM component analysis provided dual coercivity components. Thermal demagnetization of composite IRM and morphological observation of magnetic separates suggest angular magnetite produced by vehicle non-exhaust emissions spherical magnetite derived from exhaust emission to be the dominant contributors to the magnetic signal. It is likely that lower- and higher-coercivity components represent the presence of coarse-grained angular magnetite and fine-grained spherical magnetite, respectively.
