AbstractUsing a unique panel dataset of virtually all German academic political scientists, we show that researchers become much more productive due to the accumulation of human capital and third party funding. We also show however, that while universities of excellence have more productive researchers, individuals who go there do not become more productive. Finally, we show how women publish only 9 percent less than men with the same level of prior publication experience, but are about 26 percent less productive over their entire career, as early productivity leads to later productivity, so that women increasingly fall behind. These results cannot be explained through the influence of childbearing. Rather, they support the ‘theory of limited differences’, which argues that small differences in early productivity accumulate to large differences over entire careers, as early success encourages later success. Apart from generally showing why political scientists publish more or less, we specifically identify accumulative advantage as the principal reason why women increasingly fall behind men over the course of their careers.

Abstract The review essay critically evaluates, synoptically presents, and admiringly celebrates Chung-ying Cheng latest work, The Primary Way: Philosophy of Yijing. It sees the book’s publication as an emblem of an intellectual jubilee – a half-centenary of scholarly lucubration and achievement in Chinese and comparative philosophy by Cheng, who was trained at Harvard in American pragmatism and analytic philosophy. The essay reveals why Cheng returns to the Yijing time and again. The principal reason is that this ancient classic, to his way of thinking, offers us “the primary Way,” the anchoring normative criteria, perspectives, and values in a nutshell, whereby reality may be deciphered, discerned, and distinguished. To put it in metaphoric terms, the Yijing is the fount of Chinese philosophy. Whether interpreting Chinese thoughts in general or reading the Yijing in particular, Cheng brings western theoretical perspectives to bear on the understanding of the Chinese texts, which are, in and of themselves, replete with deep philosophical meanings. Cheng appropriates the Yijing for his own primary end, which is to disclose, via his onto-hermeneutic reading, a living, transformative ethico-moral philosophy that is onto-cosmologically alive and onto-generatively fecund: the primary Way. In doing so, he not only offers us innovative scholarship on the ancient classic but also opens up a theoretical and methodological frontier, an onto-hermeneutic one, where Chinese thought and philosophy may be explored anew.

AbstractCleft rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult and challenging aesthetic surgeries to carry out and bears a significant impact on the overall nasal aesthetics and function. Two reasons understood for this are the simultaneous involvement of all the layers of the nose including the skin, cartilage, skeleton and vestibular lining (this being the principal reason) and the significant scarring that is the consequence of multiple previous surgical interventions. There is a mention of numerous techniques for ultimate correction of unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities but no single technique has till date provided a definite solution for correction of all the problems that accompany these deformities. There is a revised interest in performing primary rhinoplasties at the time of lip repair with or without presurgical orthopedics but these procedures may still warrant definitive rhinoplasty at a later date. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive review of cleft rhinoplasty in the most systematic manner beginning with the pathologic anatomy followed by surgical timing, pre-operative evaluation and surgical correction. The chapter also discusses the use of various grafts in a typical cleft rhinoplasty case as well as treatment strategy for management of both, unilateral and bilateral cleft nasal deformities. The outcomes as well as complications and a note on further revisions have also been presented.
