Modernity is an action, a work (deed) that transforms the relation between a human group and its environment. The notion of “subjectivation” is the way I define human societies’ discovery and their creative capacity. Meanwhile the nation/states’ withdrawal into themselves, the closure of the borders to the full scope of globalization, and the acceptance or refusal of migrants become the central issue of all sociopolitical conflicts, replacing the previous labor-based conflicts that have been at the core of the industrial society. Sociological analysis today addresses the fundamental issue: What is the future of democracy? The answer lies in criticism visà- vis the idea of states and institutions as agents of democracy, and the assertion of a social definition of democracy.

The goal of this paper is to increase knowledge about the social definition of love in the context of an intimate relationship. The empirical material analyzed comes from Focus Group Interviews, Bulletin Board Discussions online, and representative research conducted using the CAWI method. The research was an exploratory study, and the analyzed material presents one thematic area concerning how participants understand love and the importance they attribute to it in the duration of an intimate relationship. The first part of the paper will present thematic areas related to the attempt to understand what love is that were indicated by the respondents at the stage of qualitative research. The second part of the article will present the typology of attitudes towards love on the basis of the analysis of data derived from quantitative research. The following types were distinguished: optimists in love, waiting for love, rationalists in love, distanced from love.

Ngabulâ is a tradition practiced by some santris in Bangkalan pesantrens in order to seek blessings (tabarruk) by serving the kiai. Those santris are called kabulâ or khaddam. In fact, ngabulâ is very important for kiai’s life and also the pesantren in Bangkalan, but unfortunately the study of it is still rarely done. Therefore, this research aims to explore several things: the meaning of ngabulâ in Bangkalan pesantren according to the actors and the dynamic of ngabulâ in Bangkalan pesantren based on the continuity and change theory conceptualized by John Obert Voll. This research was conducted in some pesantrens in Bangkalan from early 2019 to mid-2020, and the data was collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. This research used the paradigm of social definition by applying phenomenology. The theory used is continuity and change conceptualized by John Obert Voll in observing the resurgence of Islam in the modern world. This research concludes some facts: first, this study finds that ngabulâ for the actors involved in it (the kabulâ , kiai and their families, and the kabulâ ’s parents) means respect, dedication, learning media, and a source of blessings. Second, there is continuity and change in the ngabulâ, especially in the motives, goals, and forms of ngabulâ. To observe the continuity and change of it, the researcher uses the basic styles of action conceptualized by Voll with modification and addition, namely: adaptation, authority of the text, conservative actions, and charisma. In addition to this research, the researcher added one thing, i.e. generous manner of the kiai.

Abstract Parents who serve as trustees, and solicitors who draft trusts that involve family relations, may need to address whether parents are free to entertain conflicts and benefits that may be attributable to parent status. I discuss in broad terms the kinds of conflicts and benefits that normally should not be objectionable. The definitive consideration is the social definition of when parent access is a limited access.

This chapter investigates the relationship between the Black queer body and medical diagnosis, elaborating how minorities negotiate the authority of state-empowered medical institutions. The central contention is that Black diasporic queer writers create narratives concerned with autonomy and desire to undermine medical control and definition. Novelists K. Sello Duiker and Jackie Kay show how gay and transgender bodies under medical care must be reclaimed or hidden in the shadows to dodge the possibility of material or discursive violence of medical care. Duiker presents a counterinstitution rooted in same-sex desire as a possible means of escape. Kay suggests that narrative is a productive way to negotiate the threat of injury. Both writers imagine strategies of how queer individuals may elude the social definition of medical diagnosis.

Sociology as a science has a variety of paradigms born of social scientists. Some of these are the sociology paradigm according to George Ritzer (which consists of a social facts paradigm, a social definition paradigm, a social behavior paradigm), and a sociology paradigm according to Margaret M. Poloma (consisting of a naturalistic / positivistic paradigm, a humanistic / interpretative paradigm, and a paradigm evaluative). This article aims to integrate between the sociology paradigm according to Ritzer and the sociology paradigm according to Poloma through comparative analysis that refers to paradigm elements consisting of ontological, epistemological, methodological, and axiological dimensions Sosiologi sebagai sebuah ilmu memiliki beragam paradigma yang lahir dari para ilmuwan sosial. Beberapa diantaranya adalah tipologi paradigma sosiologi menurut George Ritzer (yang terdiri dari paradigma fakta sosial, paradigma definisi sosial, paradigma perilaku sosial), dan paradigma sosiologi menurut Margaret M. Poloma, (yang terdiri dari paradigma naturalistis/ positivistik, paradigma humanistis/ interpretatif, dan paradigma evaluatif). Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengintegrasikan paradigma sosiologi Ritzer dan paradigma sosiologi Poloma melalui analisis komparatif yang mengacu pada elemen-elemen paradigma yang terdiri dari dimensi ontologis, epistemologis, metodologis, dan aksiologis.

The focus of the discussion in this study is the First Copyright Law as an embodiment of penetration of the legal culture of Western (capitalist) countries with individualistic nuances as positive law. Secondly, the culture of the laws of the local community where the Copyright Law is applied as a living law in society (Living law). The purpose of this paper is to know and explain not the implementation of the law as a positive law (positive law) in this case what is meant is the Copyright Act, in an Indonesian society and the Batik Laweyan craftsmen in particular, so that it is expected to explain why Copyright Law cannot function optimally in Indonesia which is marked by the many violations or piracy of a copyrighted work. The method in this writing is a qualitative method with the Sociological Research approach, while the paradigm used as the basis is the Paradigm of Social Definition with the aim of understanding social behavior through interpretation by explaining the path of development and its consequences according to its causes. Based on the social definition paradigm, the theory used is interactionism theory, which mainly emphasizes sociopsychological perspectives, the main goal of which is the individual in his personal personality and the interaction between internal opinion and one's emotions with social behavior. With the Symbolic Interaction Theory approach, in this study will be able to further reveal the behavior of certain community groups by interacting with existing social behavior. And also with the Phenomenology Theory is that human action becomes a social relationship if humans give a certain meaning or meaning to their actions, and other human beings also understand their actions as appropriate which means that humans are social beings, so that the awareness of daily life is an absolute magnification. As for the study findings it turns out, the Copyright Act in the application in the Laweyan Batik Craftsman community is in conflict with the Javanese legal culture that promotes harmony between neighbors, ewuhpekeweuh, tepasliro, mutual cooperation. If the law of copyright is strictly enforced, it will result in disturbance of neighborly living conditions. Because most Batik Laweyan craftsmen live next to each other even there is still a kinship, so that when it comes to demanding or monopolizing a work, it will lead to neighboring reluctance. They assume that even the art of batik is their property from the property of their ancestors so that anyone can imitate and make it.
