The modification of the deformation and cooling methods resulting in the obtainment of acicular ferrite promotes an increase in the proportion of retained austenite (RA) and a corresponding increase in mechanical properties in Si-Al TRIP-aided steel. The effect of controlled thermomechanical processing in laboratory- and semi-industrial scales on the possibility of obtaining acicular ferrite and a high fraction of retained austenite was investigated. The steel was hot deformed in three steps: at 1050, 900 and 750 ˚C to introduce dislocations into the hot-deformed pancake austenite. Next, slow cooling in a ferritic transformation region was performed, followed by isothermal holding of steel at 450 ˚C. The interrupted tensile tests at the strain levels of 5, 10 and 15% were performed to investigate the mechanical properties response and the stability of the obtained retained austenite. Light and scanning electron microscopy, XRD and EBSD analyses were performed to assess microstructural features. The produced material showed a multiphase microstructure containing acicular ferrite and 10% of retained austenite. The microstructures obtained in both production methods were slightly different due to high temperature inertia in the semi-industrial process.

Abstract Nano-bainitic steels have attracted great attention for good wear resistance. In this research, a medium-carbon low-alloyed steel was austempered at a low temperature close to its martensite-start temperature for various times to obtain mixed microstructure of nano-bainite, martensite and retained austenite. The austempered samples were characterised comprehensively by field-emission SEM and quantitative XRD. Its two-body abrasive wear property was evaluated by sliding on a SiC abrasive disc. The results revealed the formation of initial nano-width carbide-free bainitic ferrite (BF) after austempering by 10 min, whereas the BF size and amount both increased with the austempering time. The austempered samples exhibited wear coefficients lower than the quenched martensitic sample by up to 50%. SEM and TEM observations showed wear mechanisms of micro-cutting and ploughing deformation, including the formation of a nano-laminate top layer and bending deformation in the subsurface multiphase microstructure. The decreased wear loss was attributed to the role of retained austenite in the increased plasticity. Graphic abstract

A low-cost and easy-to-produce C–Mn–Cr automotive steel for both cold and hot forming is presented in this paper. The alloying element Cr was used to replace Mn in medium-Mn steel and instead of B in hot-formed steel, in order to achieve microstructure control and hardenability improvement, replacing the residual austenite-enhanced plasticization with multidimensional enhanced plasticization through multiphase microstructure design, grain refinement, and dispersion enhancement of second-phase particles. The products of strength and elongation for the cold-formed and hot-formed steel were 20 GPa·% and 18 GPa·%, respectively, while the tensile strengths were more than 1000 MPa and 1500 MPa, respectively. This new automotive steel was also characterized by good oxidation resistance. The mechanisms of strength and plasticization of the experimental automotive steel were analyzed.

The paper presents an experimental study on microstructure changes in duplex steel after hot deformation. Duplex steels and cast steels are characterized by a multiphase microstructure. They are relatively new materials with great contributions to the many fields of industries. Due to the fact of deforming two different phase austenite and ferrite those materials have a complex plasticity. This work is a continuation and complementation of previous works and is a significant supplement to information presented in them. The article concerns precipitation phenomena and changes in the microstructure of two grades of ferritic-austenitic steels: X2CrNiMoN25-7-4 and X2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3. Those steels have a very similar chemical composition, differing by only 2.5% copper content. An important aspect presented in the work is we observed that adding 2.5% copper prevented precipitation of the destructive sigma phase during the hot deformation.
