Organizational culture is a central concept in research due to its importance in organizational functioning and suffering of employees. To better manage suffering, it is necessary to better understand the intrinsic characteristics of each type of culture and also its relationships with the environment. In this study, we used the multiple regression analysis to analyze the capacity of eight environment variables, five business strategies, and eight organizational competencies to predict the presence of Clan, Market, and Hierarchy cultures (Cameron and Quinn, 1999) in a subsample of Spanish managers (n1 = 362) and a subsample of Peruvian managers (n2 = 1,317). Contrary to what most of the literature suggests, we found almost no relationship between the environmental variables and the culture types. Strategy and competencies, in contrast, do have a significant predictive capacity, showing 9 links with the Clan culture, 7 with the Hierarchy culture, and 10 with the Market culture. In conclusion, this study has found the important characteristics of the types of organizational culture that could be useful to better manage the suffering of employees.

Artikel ini membahas mengenai budaya pasar yang berlangsung di Pasar Baru Kota Balikpapan. Budaya pasar sendiri merupakan keseluruhan norma dan nilai yang melingkupi kegiatan pemangku pasar tradisional dalam berkegiatan di pasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode etnografi dalam menggali data dari para pemangku Pasar Baru yang menjadi lokus penelitian. Etnografi dipilih karena penelitian ini berusaha menjaring data baik itu data lisan, visual maupun tertulis dari sudut pandang pengampu Pasar Baru Balikpapan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa para pedagang yang berdagang di Pasar Baru Balikpapan berasal dari latar budaya yang beragam. Mengingat Balikpapan merupakan salah satu wilayah strategis juga pintu masuk dan jalur perniagaan khususnya di Kalimantan Timur. Dalam melakukan aktivitas perdagangan, pedagang membawa nilai budaya masing-masing. Meskipun demikian secara perlahan tercipta pola tindakan dari para pedagang. Meskipun berasal dari latar budaya yang berbeda, secara tidak tertulis para pedagang seperti telah mencapai kesepakatan dalam berkegiatan di pasar.This article discusses the market culture at Pasar Baru in Balikpapan City. The market culture in this study can be defined as the overall norms and values adopted by traditional market stakeholders in their daily activities in the market. This study uses ethnographic methods to collect data from the stakeholders of Pasar Baru as the research locus. Ethnography was chosen based on the consideration that this research seeks to collect data, both oral, visual and written data from the point of view of the Pasar Baru supervisor in Balikpapan. The results show that the traders who trade at Pasar Baru in Balikpapan originate from the diverse cultural backgrounds. It is a consequence of the City of Balikpapan as one of the strategic areas as well as the entrance and route of commerce, especially in East Kalimantan. In their trading activities, the traders bring their respective cultural values. It slowly encourages the creation of new patterns in the behavior of traders. They seem to have reached an agreement in their activities in the market.

The article discusses the problems of the professional ethos of science genesis and its transformation in the context of modern realities. There is a brief description of the classical norms of the scientific ethos (universalism, communalism, disinterestedness and organized skepticism), formulated by R. Merton in the late 1930s and early 1940s, in response to the sharp exacerbation of the problem of science’s autonomy in the conditions of totalitarian regimes. The key idea of Merton is especially emphasized: compliance with the norms is aimed primarily at optimizing the process of scientific production and, thereby, the most effective solution to the main goal of science – the increasing of certified knowledge volume. The concept of the ethical imperatives of a scientific profession was almost immediately criticized for being ‘idealistic’ and ‘disconnected from real life’, and by the end of the 1960s it intensified many times over. You can find the examples of critical attitude to the concept of Merton, also we described the alternative versions of the norms of scientific ethos (in the interpretation of Mitroff and Fuller). It has been established that under the conditions of academic capitalism, which implies the incorporation of market culture into the system of scientific research, a negative deformation of classical norms occurs, in practice creating barriers to the production of knowledge and disrupting the practice of communication within the scientific community. The result of this deformation is the system of relationships between scientists, described by Ziman in the framework of the concept of ‘post-academic science’. Evidence is presented that the process of degradation of norms is further intensified in the conditions of cognitive capitalism and neoliberal science. Using the example of modern Russian science, the author shows that the result of such degradation is, for example, the exacerbation of the problem of plagiarism. Methods of counteracting such practice are briefly described using the example of modern Russian science, such as the creation of a Dissernet community or a special commission to counteract falsification of scientific research within the framework of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In a theoretical sense, in the context of the philosophy and sociology of science, the concept of ‘two ethics’ proposed by B. Pruzhinin, looks productive. B. Pruzhinin singles out the specific ethos of fundamental and applied science.

PurposeThis study analyzes the impact of intellectual capital on organizational ambidexterity by evaluating the mediating effect of the different types of organizational cultures (adhocracy, clan, market and hierarchy) on the said relationship.Design/methodology/approachFrom a sample of 124 directors of Colombian firms, the information is analyzed using Structural Equation Models through the Partial Least Squares method (SEM-PLS).FindingsThe results show that intellectual capital has a positive relationship with organizational ambidexterity and that market culture presents a positive mediating effect in the said relationship, while the mediating effects of adhocracy culture, clan culture and hierarchy culture are not significant.Practical implicationsDirectors can favor the development of organizational ambidexterity by investing in the intellectual capital of their firms and by promoting the development of market culture attributes.Originality/valueThis work contributes empirical evidence on the mediating role of organizational culture in the relationship between intellectual capital and ambidexterity, highlighting the importance of market culture over other types of culture for the simultaneous development of exploration and exploitation capabilities, in the context of an emerging Latin American economy such as Colombia.

Purpose The authors felt there was a lack of prior evidence about the antecedents of internal CSR and its relationship with employees’ happiness. The study considered the role of organizational culture as a determinant of internal CSR actions. Design/methodology/approach The authors questioned 921 employees of companies from various sectors in Spain. The respondents mainly worked for service and industrial companies with fewer than 50 employees and an annual turnover above 250,000 euros. They were mostly men, mainly well-educated and the average age was 38.5. They were surveyed using a questionnaire with 59 questions assessing internal CSR processes (20 items), organizational culture (24 items) and employee happiness (15 items). Findings The results showed that clan and adhocracy cultures are positively and significantly associated with internal CSR practices. In the case of hierarchy culture, it is positively related to adaptability to change and occupational health and safety. But the results did not support the hypotheses related to market culture as only its relationship with adaptability to change was positive. The data also indicated the significant and positive effect of internal CSR on employee happiness. Originality/value The authors believe their study has implications for practitioners and policymakers. They argue that organizations should try to develop cultures that help to promote internal CSR, which means adhocracy and clan. Meanwhile, there are also practical implications for researchers. First, the model integrates happiness, which is rare in CSR studies. Second, the study addresses a gap in the research about how company culture acts as an antecedent to internal CSR. Third, the study generates knowledge about internal CSR from the perspective of employees.

The literature suggests that teacher burnout is influenced by the market and hierarchy cultures of school management and teachers’ emotional labor strategies of surface and deep acting. However, studies have suggested that school management cultures and emotional labor strategies may not function independently based on the emotional labor theory. Nevertheless, the literature has paid less attention to the relationship between the school management cultures, emotional labor, and teacher burnout. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between the three variables in China via an online questionnaire survey. After surveying 425 kindergarten, primary and secondary teachers who participated in a professional development program organized by a public university in Beijing, the study found that teacher burnout was positively related to market culture but negatively related to hierarchy culture. Moreover, the impact of the market culture was fully mediated by surface acting while the impact of hierarchy culture was partially mediated by surface acting and deep acting.

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) has increased worldwide as a new approach on the building design, construction, and facilities management. Given this panorama, the Brazilian Government enforced a regulation in 2019, Decreto 9983, which outlines a roadmap for the BIM implementation in the Brazilian construction ecosystem. As one of its guidelines is to publish the necessary technical standards, a special committee, ABNT CEE 134, was hosted at the Brazilian organization for Technical Standardization with a dedicated WG for establishing BIM objects parameters. In the framework of the WG, a subgroup on Acoustics analysis aimed to deal on how to incorporate acoustic requirements to the BIM Object. In this paper, the authors describe the development of this feature, unprecedented so far. The approach adopted for incorporating acoustic requirements into BIM objects at the Brazilian BIM Standard aimed to facilitate the workflow of acoustic consulting, while adapting it to the limitations imposed by the existing software and the construction market culture in Brazil. This paper also provides some guidelines on how this issue could be addressed in future standards revisions.

This study analyzes the phenomenon of Islamic populism, the nature of populist thought and its relation to mass hysteria. Global political events involving large numbers of masses have put the study of populism shifting from the periphery to the center of attention. In its various manifestations, populism represents a rejection of political elites which is based on the argument that populism is a response to a crisis of legitimacy for political institutions and actors. Based on descriptive and critical content analysis, this study aims to examine the trend of populism at the level of digital culture which is dominated by spectacle and market culture. By investigating how populist thinking works, this research seeks to understand the dynamics of populism and the logical consequences it entails, especially regarding the future of the actual heterogeneity of society, both in religious and cultural contexts, behind its tendency to totalize and homogenize everything through the logic equivalent in populism.

The aim of this study is to determine the mediating effect of organizational agility on the impact of organizational culture on firm performance. Within the scope of the study, firstly, a conceptual framework about organizational culture, organizational agility and firm performance was created, and then the findings and results obtained from the survey application conducted within the scope of the research were included. The research sample consists of 140 company employees belonging to the Manufacturing, Service, IT, Retail and Agriculture sectors in the provinces of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli and Zonguldak. The survey data were collected by the online survey method using the non-coincidental convenience sampling method. Quantitative data analysis was applied in the research. The questionnaire form using a 5-point Likert scale consists of demographic questions and organizational culture, organizational agility and firm performance scales. In the study, in which structural equation modeling was preferred as a model, SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 22 package programs were used in the analysis of the data. Confirmatory factor analysis was checked for validity test and Cronbach's alpha values were checked for reliability. According to the findings of the study, organizational agility has a mediating effect on the effect of clan, adhocracy and hierarchy cultures on firm performance. However, the mediating effect of market culture could not be determined. In terms of demographic characteristics, significant differences were determined between perceptions of organizational culture, organizational agility and firm performance. At the dawn of World War I (WWI), the British stock market was the preserve of a wealthy elite, and most people in finance and politics agreed that it should stay this way. By the end of the century, Britain had more individual shareholders than trade union members. This book explores the financial, political, and cultural forces that brought about this dramatic change in British society. By capturing the voices and experiences of everyday investors, this study brings to life the history of Britain’s vibrant stock market culture: from the mass investment in war bonds during WWI, through the expansion of the financial press in the post-war decades, to the ‘popular capitalism’ of Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party during the 1980s. Throughout the century, the stock market came to play an ever larger role in people’s lives through pension funds and life insurances. But as financial securities lost their age-old stigma of being either immoral or suitable only for the upper classes, the markets also became a popular pastime for millions of Britons who were seeking higher than average returns and a similar thrill of risk and reward to that of gambling on horses or the football pools. Playing the Market forcefully reminds us that gambling is not—as many financial professionals would have us believe—a parasitical element to the otherwise rational and prudent sphere of modern finance. Instead, it is one of its constituent features and explains why until this day, the stock market is either criticized or celebrated as a casino.
