AbstractThere is a lack of an established antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance system in animal welfare centers. Therefore, the AMR prevalence in shelter dogs is rarely known. Herein, we conducted a survey in animal shelters in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, in the Kanto Region, Japan, to ascertain the AMR status of Escherichia coli  (E. coli) prevalent in shelter dogs. E. coli was detected in the fecal samples of all 61 and 77 shelter dogs tested in Chiba and Kanagawa, respectively. The AMR was tested against 20 antibiotics. E. coli isolates derived from 16.4% and 26.0% of samples from Chiba and Kanagawa exhibited resistance to at least one antibiotic, respectively. E. coli in samples from Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures were commonly resistant to ampicillin, piperacillin, streptomycin, kanamycin, tetracycline, and nalidixic acid; that from the Kanagawa Prefecture to cefazolin, cefotaxime, aztreonam, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin and that from Chiba Prefecture to chloramphenicol and imipenem. Multidrug-resistant bacteria were detected in 18 dogs from both regions; β-lactamase genes (blaTEM, blaDHA-1, blaCTX-M-9 group CTX-M-14), quinolone-resistance protein genes (qnrB and qnrS), and mutations in quinolone-resistance-determining regions (gyrA and parC) were detected. These results could partially represent the AMR data in shelter dogs in the Kanto Region of Japan.

Health literacy (HL) promotes healthy lifestyle behaviors among older adults, and its relationship with frailty remains unclear. This study examined whether HL is a predictor of frailty progression among community-dwelling older adults. Data from two surveys conducted in 2012 and 2016 involving older residents (mean age, 71.6 ± 4.6 years) of Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan were used. Only healthy individuals without frailty and cognitive impairments participated in the 2012 assessment, where the Kihon Checklist (KCL), HL, and other variables were assessed. Logistic and multiple logistic analyses were used to assess the effects of HL and other factors on frailty between the ‘high HL’ vs. ‘low HL’ groups in 2012 and between the ‘robust’ vs. ‘frailty-progressing’ groups in 2016. Of the 621 robust participants, 154 (25.4%) had progression of frailty in 2016, which was significantly associated with advanced age, higher KCL score, lower HL, poor mental health, and lack of social support. Furthermore, low HL was a predictor of frailty progression. Low HL may be associated with frailty progression. The obtained results suggest that increased health literacy should be effective in preventing frailty for community-dwelling older residents.

Abstract Due to the acceleration of urbanization, many green spaces are facing the fate of abandonment, especially the urban and suburban green space. In Japan, these suburban green spaces can also be used as a Satoyama. Satoyama is a multi-purpose ecosystem, including some secondary forests, farmlands, lakes, marshes, and so on. They are affected by human beings and benefited each other. It is proof of harmonious coexistence that human beings have been groping for in nature since ancient times. This study collected the records of the Satoyama activity group in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan from 2008 to 2019, and used KHCoder3 to mine the characters. The purpose of this study was to identify that it is found that people use suburban green space in variety nowadays through the activities of volunteers in Satoyama. From the records, the green space has a series of changing stages after becoming Satoyama, in which 2008-2011 is the first stage, and 2016-2019 is the other stage, but 2012, 2014, and 2015 were grouped separately. In addition to the daily maintenance of the forest, there were also some special words that can be seen that people attach great importance to the publicity of Satoyama as a place for Children’s environmental education. For the future, Satoyama activities can afford good references to urban green space multi-function, maintain ecological balance, and keeping sustainable development.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Early-onset dementia (EOD), defined as dementia onset before the age of 65 years, is relatively rare, but its social impacts are significant. This study aimed to characterize the diagnosis and clinical and social status of EOD subjects in the 11 dementia centers in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A retrospective 1-year survey was conducted. Collected data included clinical diagnosis, age at onset, age at survey, neuropsychological test, family history, employment, and living status. <b><i>Results:</i></b> We identified 208 EOD subjects, including 123 (59.4%), 24 (11.6%), 21 (10.1%), 17 (8.2%), and 10 (4.8%) with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular dementia, frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), dementia with Lewy bodies/Parkinson’s disease dementia, and alcohol-related dementia, respectively. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score &#x3c;24 was observed in 50–75% of patients and was not correlated with disease duration. Twenty-four (16.4%) subjects had positive family history of EOD. EOD subjects were at risk of early retirement, and 133 subjects lived with their family, in whom 64 (30.8%) lived with their child. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> In dementia centers, AD, FTLD, and Lewy body dementia had relatively large proportion. Employment, economy, and social supports are urgently needed for EOD subjects and their family.

To enhance the genomics and genetics of azalea, the whole-genome sequences of two species of Rhododendron were determined and analyzed in this study: Rhododendron ripense, the cytoplasmic donor and ancestral species of large-flowered and evergreen azalea cultivars, respectively; and Rhododendron kiyosumense, a native of Chiba prefecture (Japan) seldomly bred and cultivated. A chromosome-level genome sequence assembly of R. ripense was constructed by single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and genetic mapping, while the genome sequence of R. kiyosumense was assembled using the single-tube long fragment read (stLFR) sequencing technology. The R. ripense genome assembly contained 319 contigs (506.7 Mb; N50 length: 2.5 Mb) and was assigned to the genetic map to establish 13 pseudomolecule sequences. On the other hand, the genome of R. kiyosumense was assembled into 32,308 contigs (601.9 Mb; N50 length: 245.7 kb). A total of 34,606 genes were predicted in the R. ripense genome, while 35,785 flower and 48,041 leaf transcript isoforms were identified in R. kiyosumense through Iso-Seq analysis. Overall, the genome sequence information generated in this study enhances our understanding of genome evolution in the Ericales and reveals the phylogenetic relationship of closely-related species. This information will also facilitate the development of phenotypically attractive azalea cultivars.

A new marine Sargassum-boring species of Limnoria (Limnoriidae) is described on the basis of specimens obtained at Kamogawa-shi, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Limnoria aspera sp. nov. shares a reduced mandibular palp to a seta, algal-feeding, and the clavate shaped epipod of the maxilliped with the other species of non-mandibular-palp group. L. aspera sp. nov. differs morphologically from the congeneric species by secondary unguis of pereopods and unique carinae of pleonite 5 and pleotelson. We describe the sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene and the nuclear 28S rDNA gene. L. aspera sp. nov. differs by 14.2–18.0% in p-distance based on COI sequences from other Japanese species, L. furca and L. nagatai.
