This study examined differences in mother-reported physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) based on child sex and mothers’ perceptions of PA resources for Mexican-heritage (MH) children residing in Texas-Mexico border colonias. Mothers with children 8 to 10 years old ( n = 335) from colonias in south Texas reported if there were places for their child to be physically active and their child’s hours of PA and ST per day during the week and weekend. Two-way ANCOVAs examined differences in child PA and ST based on presence of PA places and child sex. Only 46.0% of mothers ( n = 159) reported places for their child to be physically active; with no significant difference based on sex. Mothers’ perceptions of a place to play was differentially beneficial for girls’ weekday PA and ST. Findings suggest a need to increase perceived and/or actual access to PA places in colonias communities, particularly for girls.

Abstract Background: Cervical is a cancer that involves women. Cervical cancer rank’s is the second after breast cancer in Indonesia. Prevention that can be done is by conducting an examination of the early detection of cervical cancer VIA method. The desire to conduct VIA test is influenced by several factors, including knowledge, awareness, distance awareness, cost affordability, and mother's perception. This study aims to analyze the accessibility factors of health services and maternal perceptions of VIA test at the Puskesmas Benculuk Kabupaten Banyuwangi. Methods: This study was a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional design. Sampling used a random sampling technique of 60 respondents with questionnaire research instruments. The research variables consisted of knowledge, awareness, affordability, affordability, and women's perception. Results: The results showed that 93.3% had never done VIA examination, 90% of women of childbearing age had good knowledge, 70% had far-reaching affordability with health care facilities, 100% were able to finance IVA examinations, most women of childbearing age had a good perception of cancer cervix and VIA test. Conclusion: Accessibility factors for health services and maternal perceptions of IVA examination are included in the good category, but from 60 respondents only 4 respondents have already conducted IVA examinations. Some of the reasons why women of childbearing age has not conducted an examination include the feeling of shame and fear of health workers, fear of cervical cancer being detected, and feeling that they have not needed an IVA examination because they have not felt any symptoms that lead to cervical cancer.

AbstractDeterminants of parenting are most often considered using one child per family within a cross-sectional design. In 182 families, the current study included two siblings and sought to predict maternal harsh parenting measured prospectively when each child was age 2 years from child gender, infant temperament, maternal age, maternal educational attainment, maternal depression and anxiety and maternal perceptions of partner support. Multilevel modeling was used to examine between- and within-family variance simultaneously. Mothers reported levels of harsh parenting that were similar towards both children (intraclass correlation = 0.69). Thus, the majority of variance in maternal perceptions of their harsh parenting resided between rather than within families and was accounted for in part by maternal age and maternal perceptions of partner support. Results are discussed in relation to family-wide determinants of harsh parenting, previous literature pertaining to parenting siblings and the potential avenues for future research and practice.

This study analyzes the moderating role of avoidant coping (in early pregnancy) in the relationship between postpartum depressive (PPD) symptoms and maternal perceptions about mother–baby relations and self-confidence. Participants were 116 low-risk obstetric mothers (mean age = 31.2 years, SD = 3.95, range 23–42) who received care and gave birth at a Spanish public hospital. Measurements were made at two points in time: at first trimester of pregnancy (maternal avoidance coping) and four months after childbirth (PPD and maternal perceptions). Avoidant coping was associated with the perception of the baby as irritable and unstable (p = 0.003), including irritability during lactation (p = 0.041). Interaction effects of avoidant coping and postpartum depression were observed on the perception of the baby as irritable (p = 0.031) and with easy temperament (p = 0.002). Regarding the mother’s self-confidence, avoidant coping was related to a lack of security in caring for the baby (p < 0.001) and had a moderating effect between PPD and mother’s self-confidence (i.e., lack of security in caring for the baby, p =0.027; general security, p = 0.007). Interaction effects showed that the use of avoidant coping in the mother exacerbated the impact of PPD on the early mother–infant relationship.
