The fifth chapter explores how theological education was opened to women, African Americans, and working class whites. Congregationalist Mary Lyon founded Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary (1837) to provide a rigorous education built on the liberal arts, theology, personal discipline, and domestic work—all designed to produce independent women for missions. Other women, like Methodist Lucy Rider, founded religious training schools for women in their denominations. For African Americans, pioneers like AME Bishop Daniel Payne, who revived Wilberforce University (1856), developed a blend of liberal arts and theological education. W. E. B. Dubois fought for this model as the way to educate “the talented tenth” needed for racial uplift. The other model, pioneered by Samuel Armstrong at the Hampton Institute (VA) and Booker T. Washington at Tuskegee (Alabama), combined a religious training school with industrial work so that black pastors and teachers could be self-supporting. Finally, Bible colleges, like that of Dwight Moody, opened theological studies to working people with only a basic education. Emma Dryer brought practical, normal school approaches to the beginnings of the Moody Bible Institute (MBI) in Chicago. Under Dr. R. A. Torrey, MBI combined a literal reading of Scripture with experiential holiness, spiritual healing, end-times prophecy, and practical business methods—all of which marked the future fundamentalist movement.

[THE APPLICATION OF DISCOVERY LEARNING IN OBTAINING EFFECTIVE LEARNING (STUDY OF TRAINING FOR ISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE TEACHER OF VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS IN RELIGIOUS TRAINING CENTER OF PADANG)] This research aimed to analyze whether the application of the Discovery Learning model can realize effective learning in the training of Ushul Fikih MAK teacher at the Religious Training Center of Padang in 2019. The research method used was descriptive qualitative using a survey and interview of 30 trainees. The results show that the application of discovery learning models makes learning more effective because it adopts scientific steps in building knowledge and encourages trainees to have creative thinking skills to find problems, formulate hypotheses, collect data with various techniques, analyze, draw conclusions, and communicating what was found. This is under Ushul Fikih's mindset, which is to encourage and train trainees to investigate (al-iktisyaf) to find something themselves and in turn, produce knowledge that is truly meaningful. The application of discovery learning models in the training activities of the subjects of Usul Fikih MAK in 2019 at the Padang Education and Training Center turned out to be able to change the passive learning conditions to become effective, active and creative, changing learning from the teacher oriented / al-murtakiz 'style of al-mudarrib to student oriented / al-murtakiz 'ala al-musyarikin, and also change the mode of expositor trainees who always receive full information from widyaiswara into a discovery that is searching and finding information on their own

The purpose of this study is to highlight the da‘wah approaches and methodology of the Da‘wat-i-Islāmī (DI) and contribution along with a survey of the da‘wah activities of the Barelwis, based on primary sources. DI uses the Barelwi faith as its religious mark. Barelwis are representatives of the ‘popular’ and ‘Ṣūfī-oriented’ Islam. The driving force behind this facet of Islam is ‘to love Prophet Muḥammad (SAW) and follow his Sunnah’. This is the focal point of all da‘wah activities of the Barelwis. DI started its work in Karachi in 1981. It aims at promoting and deepening love for the Prophet Muḥammad (SAW). Its next aim is to establish a society similar to the early Muslim community of Madīnah through peaceful preaching. It expanded gradually all over Pakistan and then became so conspicuous, that nowadays it is functional in more than 180 countries and thus has turned into a global tablīghī movement. It has its own edifying literature. The most important of which is Faīḍān-i-Sunnat. In this work, the Sunnah of the Prophet regarding daily affairs of life has been narrated. For the religious training, inter alia, it also holds weekly meetings in different cities and towns of Pakistan and even in some European cities as well. The members of the DI have to show their commitment to the Islamic way of life as reflected in the Faīḍān-i-Sunnat. Besides religious sector, it is also working in social and educational fields. Although it is supported with reference to its aims to build character in its individual members, it nevertheless attracts diverse criticism about some of its practices.
