The outbreak of Covid-19 has weakened the performance of micro businesses, especially micro scale women entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs implement various measures to sustain their businesses through the pandemic. This study aims to examine the factors that influence the performance of micro businesses in the city of Manado, North Sulawesi Province. The study uses the sample of 30 micro businesses collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews with women entrepreneurs with stratified random sampling technique. The collected data was then analyzed with SmartPLS 3.0 M3. The results found that trust and networks have significant influences on the performance of micro businesses during the crisis. The findings imply that businesses need to establish strong relationships with customers as a mean to building trust and networking to enable businesses to survive in the midst of a crisis. In addition, businesses should also improvise their products in times of crisis to maintain the cash flow.Keywords: women entrepreneur; business performance; trust; smartPLS AbstrakPandemi Covid-19 telah menghambat produktivitas usaha di sektor mikro, tidak terkecuali para pelaku usaha perempuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi kinerja usaha sektor mikro di Kota Manado, Sulawesi Utara. Penelitian ini menggunakan sampel yang dipilih secara acak yang terdiri dari 30 pelaku usaha mikro perempuan. Data dianalisis menggunakan SmartPLS 3.0 M3, setelah melalui prosespenyebaran kuesioner, observasi, dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa faktor kepercayaan (trust) dan jaringan (network) memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap kinerja usaha mikro di masa krisis. Kedua faktor ini sangat penting karena kepercayaan dan jaringan memberikan kemampuan bagi pelaku usaha untuk tetap bertahan di masa krisis. Selain itu, pelaku usaha juga sebaiknya melakukan improvisasi atas produknya dimasa krisis untuk menjaga kelancaran arus kas.

Study level/applicability The case can be taught to MBA/PGDM students to give them experiential learning in the course on entrepreneurship. The case can be used to specifically make the student understand the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in the male-dominated business sector and recognize the entrepreneurial competencies needed to run a business. Subject area Entrepreneurship. Case overview Shany Jalal, Promoter and Managing Director of Servicecare Pvt. Ltd., and the protagonist of the case proud owner of Servicecare Pvt. Ltd. reminisced the circumstances that drove her to start the business venture in Bangalore, India. At the age of 17, a personal setback instilled in Shany a strong desire to become self-reliant and independent. Backed with a degree in hotel management and a meager loan amount of INR 10,000 provided by her father on certain terms and conditions, Shany deep dived into the soft facility management sector business way back in the year 1999 and since then there has been no turning back. Today, Shany Jalal is proud that her venture by starting a proprietorship company “Service Care”, and later converted it into a Private Limited Company, “Servicecare Private Limited” in 2011. Shany Jalal was proud that her venture is a name to reckon with in Bangalore. She has had a team of 4,200 employees, which operates Pan India, providing top-notch corporate cleaning solutions. Her motto was not to compromise on quality and she continues to provide the highest level of service to her esteemed clients, some of them even dating back to the days of inception. Her determination powered by a strong value system is what keeps the company a cut above the rest. Being in the soft facilities management service for almost 20 years, Shany Jalal feels she has achieved her dream. Today, she is a highly successful woman entrepreneur. As she retraces her career path, she owes her success earned through years of dedication, commitment, hard work and timely intervention of some kind-hearted individuals. Since 2011, the company witnessed an average growth of 41% year on year. Though there was stiff competition from domestic and multinational property management companies, Shany sailed through. However, in the global pandemic of 2020, when her business was impacted, Shany realized that to sustain organizational growth, she had to integrate technology with service. She contemplated ways and means of integrating technology with services to meet the clients’ demands. However, Shany believes that to sustain organization growth, technology must be integrated with service. She is currently contemplating ways to introduce and integrate technology with services to efficiently and effectively meet clients’ demands. Expected learning outcomes 1. Understand the gender issues in India and its impact on women entrepreneurs. 2. Analyse the ecosystem that supports supported women entrepreneurs in creating a new venture. 3. Identify the leadership traits and style, entrepreneurial competencies and capacities of the women entrepreneur in this case. 4. Recognize the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in the facilities management business sector. 5. Social implications Shany was able to face the challenges that came her way successfully with grit and courage. She was able to expand her business. Her business helped lighten the lives of many people as she provided a means of livelihood to the underprivileged. Shany was also able to motivate her husband to start a business venture and stood by him. She encouraged women to stand on their own feet especially motivating women to set up their own businesses. She is also in constant touch with other like-minded women entrepreneurs who share similar experiences in handling crises. This gives her more insight to take proper decisions. This study examines the processes and mechanisms through which entrepreneurship leads to the empowerment and emancipation of women living in poverty. Drawing on the entrepreneuring as emancipation perspective, we identify specific activities through which emancipatory entrepreneuring manifests itself in the context of women’s entrepreneurship in India. We observe that the activities of a social entrepreneur—the SEWA trade union—complement the activities of individual entrepreneurs and lead to economic, personal, and cultural empowerment. Further, we find evidence of emancipation at the collective level, expressed in changes of sociocultural norms about women’s entrepreneurship. Our study extends the entrepreneuring as emancipation perspective and contributes to research on empowerment and emancipation, women’s entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship in developing countries.

Women entrepreneur has gained utmost importance in the past few decades in Malaysia due to their significant contribution to the country's economic development. However, few business challenges create a constant obstruction for many women entrepreneurs such as lack of ICT knowledge, time constraint to learn ICT, lack of technological expertise, etc. The present study aims to identify the effect of ICT adoption on business performance and examine how ICT usage helped them handle operational business matters. The present study adopted the qualitative research strategy, and researchers interviewed ten (10) women entrepreneurs for this study. A semi-structured interview technique was applied, and six Malay and four Chinese entrepreneurs made the study population. The result highlights that Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs use ICT in their business operation such as warehousing system, purchasing system, HRM software and accounting system, purchase order system, production system, internal communication, and AutoCAD. The present study may support the prospective entrepreneurs in considering the ICT usage to embark on technology and innovation and provide inputs to policymakers to design a proper support system for Malaysian women entrepreneurs, particularly those new entrepreneurs who are mostly young and inexperienced.

Entrepreneurship refers to the process of creating wealth for the society with the entrepreneurial capability not only for the entrepreneur but also for the societal, government, and economy of nation cause by availing the opportunities in a fast-shifting social, political, legal and economic environment. The increasing rate of Start-ups has been registered over a couple of years and in maximum start-ups founders are male. Female entrepreneur is now initiating and performing at the digital platform. Females increasing number of enrolment in schools and higher education has contributed to innovative products and niche market. Women play a vital role in every sphere of life in the family and in building society as well. As far as an entrepreneur is concern there is insignificant participation of women entrepreneurs. In the 21st century, as women empowerment has become the main focus of discussion, the government and societies have identified the potentially women’s participation and their importance but still while creating policies women entrepreneur is ignored. The participation of women is necessary for socio-economic progress and for the large interest of any Nation. Strategy makers must understand the prerequisite for women entrepreneurs and avenues for women’s economic independence. The Government of India has defined women entrepreneurs as “An enterprise owned and controlled by women having a minimum financial interest of 51 per cent of the capital and giving at least 51 per cent of the employment generated in the enterprise to women. Women Entrepreneur is a person who accepts a challenging role to meet her personal needs and become economically independent.” This study analyses their current status causes that have provoked them to set free their entrepreneurial abilities into start-ups. The study will facilitate in understanding the women-entrepreneurship to researchers, policy-makers, educators and practitioners help them to foster a favourable conducive ecosystem for women-entrepreneur. This research study is based on secondary data where drawbacks in entrepreneurial policy are highlighted and some recommendations are given to promote the healthy growth of women entrepreneurs. As per scheme guidelines, in Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme(EAP) and Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programme (ESDP) there should be overall 40% women participation. This paper tries to analyze the participation of women startups in economic development and to identify various factors responsible for higher numbers of womenstartups. The causes of low female-start-up participation are difficult in access to finance and networks, responsibilities towards family and child-care, low level of confidence in business in women’s skills. This research paper tries to recommend some measures that can assist women’s entrepreneurial empowerment. This study also gives an insight into opportunity and prospect for female-entrepreneur and analyse start-up scheme of government to empower women entrepreneurs and the challenges they face.

Women entrepreneur plays a catalytic role in economic development, as women constitute half of Malaysia's population. The contribution of women entrepreneurs in the country's economy is significant and may not ignore. Malaysia is a multicultural and multiethnic society comprised of Malays, Chinese, Indian and other local ethnics. The present study investigates the leadership and decision-making style among Malaysian women entrepreneurs. The present study adopted the qualitative research strategy, and ten women entrepreneurs are interviewed. A semi-structured interview technique is applied, and 6 Malays and 4 Chinese entrepreneurs made the study population. The result highlights that both Malay and Chinese entrepreneurs used democratic leadership styles for business management. Regarding decision-making, Malaysian women experienced failures in making the right decision. However, they considered the failure as a learning process for future decision-making. The present study will help new entrepreneurs persevere in their business ventures, and policymakers look into the best supports to enhance Malaysian women entrepreneurs' success. Research study is conducted through primary and secondary data, the study had mainly constructed on questionnaire interviewed of face to face women entrepreneurs in Hyderabad district that covered the main area of Latifabad and Qasimabad. Randomly survey method for sample had been selected for the research. Although sample had encompassed of female tycoons as of a variability of segments.
