This study aims to find the speech styles used by Bagas as the main character in Pakai Hati The Series when he talked to his colleagues, clients, and supervisors.  In conducting this study, I used the theory of speech styles by Chaer and Agustina (2010), standard Indonesian characteristics by Prihantini (2015) and Kridalaksana (2007), social dimension by Holmes (2017), and status by Brown and Attardo (2005) as the theoretical framework. This study employed a qualitative approach. From the analysis, I found that Bagas used the consultative style, casual style, and intimate style when talking to his colleagues, clients, and bosses. He also used the formal style towards his clients, but he did not use the frozen style when talking to his interlocutors. This study showed that Bagas did not differentiate his speech style merely based on status since there were some other factors that might affect his choice of speech style, namely: habit or personality, type or context of the conversation, and social distance. Keywords: speech styles, status, web series

This chapter shows that the expedition of Algiers in 1830 was in part inspired by a project of small coastal settlement, combined with a vague aspiration to informal domination over the Algerian hinterland. This project was rooted in Enlightened and liberal thought about empire and continued to inform French policy after the Revolution of 1830, as shown by the official motto of occupation restreinte (limited occupation) and efforts to turn 'Abd al Qadir's new Arab emirate into a client state. The failure of this policy may have been inevitable, but it was precipitated by contingent factors, including a territorial tussle between the French and 'Abd al Qadir in the eastern Constantine province and the great European war scare of 1840, which highlighted the precariousness of French settlements on the North African coast. Only then did the French government embark on a deliberate policy of territorial conquest. However, the mediocre economic returns of territorial rule led the Second Napoleonic Empire to try to adopt a less formal style of domination by transforming the French colony into an “Arab Kingdom.” Ultimately, Algeria did not only become a very formal type of colony by design; it can also be construed as a case of informal empire manqué.

Qur’anic influence on the works of Rumi and Iqbal is equally recognized by poets, critics, and general readers. The researchers have tried to establish Qur’anic influence on their poetic themes, their mystical ideology, and their poetic style. There was a need to explore how the channel of influence from Qur’an to Rumi and Iqbal was completed. The current article examines the extent to which Iqbal’s technique of story writing has been influenced by Rumi’s art of narration inspired from the stories of the Holy Qur’an. The significance of this study can be judged through keeping in view the globally recognized status of both poets. The study is based on Harold Bloom’s model, the Anatomy of Influence. In the light of Bloom’s model, different features of Iqbal’s narratives including, Characters from the Qur’anic Narratives, Retelling the Existing Stories, Figures from the Islamic History, Description of Human Nature, Confrontation of Characters and their dialogues, Expressiveness, and Lack of Formal Style, have been analyzed to trace Rumi’s influence. Surprisingly, Rumi’s impact on all features of Iqbal’s stories has been noticed. It has been concluded that Rumi’s influenced on Iqbal’s narrative technique is confirmed. It has also been established that, Bloom’s model is an appropriate approach for similar research in Comparative study of literatures, religions, and politics.

The study aims to explore the register variation in Chinese English and language variation between Chinese English and American English. A corpus-based and comparative methodology was used to analyse the discourse features of Chinese English in the use of the lexical items perhaps and maybe. The major findings of the study can be stated as follows: 1) the more formal word perhaps is used more frequently than the informal word maybe in all the four genres in Chinese English. This shows that the text of Chinese English is generally in a more formal style. 2) In the Chinese English text, the ratios of the standard frequency of perhaps to maybe are greater than those in American English in the all the four genres. This indicates that the text in Chinese English is generally in a more formal style than that in American English. 3) In the Chinese English text, the informal word maybe is used less frequently than in the American English text. This is a sign that Chinese English is more formal than American English.
