Background: Caring for a preterm infant is known to be a stressful experience as these infants are at a high risk of medical sequelae and developmental delays. Early intervention is imperative for the best developmental outcome for the infant. Such interventions are often delivered through the mother or primary caregiver; however, healthcare professionals are seldom aware of all the factors that influence maternal well-being, potentially influencing her ability to provide optimal care.Aim: To explore the experiences of a group of vulnerable women, namely, isiXhosa-speaking mothers of preterm infants living in low socio-economic circumstances in the Western Cape province of South Africa, regarding having, caring for and feeding their preterm infants within the first 6 months of the infant’s life.Setting: A follow-up clinic for preterm infants and their mothers at a public tertiary hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Methods: The study employed a qualitative, cross-sectional design that was explorative and contextual in nature. A discussion schedule was used to guide 15 in-depth interviews with mothers that were later thematically analysed. Results: Social support and religion positively influenced maternal coping. The infant’s medical stability was the main concern for mothers and concerns regarding the infant’s development did not arise. Prematurity influenced mothers’ decisions to use traditional medicines and hospital care affected some traditional practices. Conclusion: The study findings highlighted the influence of traditional and religious beliefs, the importance of the cultural education of medical staff members and a support system to improve maternal experiences.Contribution: The findings provide insights into maternal experiences with implications for healthcare practitioners’ continued education in an ethnically diverse setting.

Contents: Families of children with congenital heart disease face frequent healthcare encounters due to their child's care trajectory. With an emphasis on assuring caring in healthcare, it is necessary to understand parents’ perceptions of healthcare providers’ actions when their child undergoes heart surgery. Aim:  This study aimed to evaluate the effect of family-centered care intervention on maternal coping and participation in care for their children with congenital heart diseases. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. The study was carried out at the pediatric inpatient department in Cardiovascular Hospital, affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. A purposive sample of 50 children undergoing heart surgery and their accompanying mothers. The study was used a structured interview questionnaire, the family-centered care scale, the index of mothers' participation, mothers’ practice observational checklists, and the coping process scale to collect the study’s data. Results: The study reveals a statistically significant difference in the mothers' total coping pattern after family-centered care intervention compared to before intervention at p=0.000. A statistically significant difference was also revealed regarding the total mothers' participation in the care of their children with congenital heart disease at p=0.000. There was a strong positive correlation between total mothers' coping patterns, participation, and mothers' total actual practices regarding their children's care suffering from congenital heart diseases after the intervention. Conclusion: The family-centered care intervention effectively improved mothers' coping patterns and participation in care for their children with congenital heart diseases. Emphasizing the importance of family (usually the mother) participation in care for their children with congenital heart diseases during hospitalization for heart surgery. Designing and carrying out educational programs for pediatric nurses to promote family-centered care in clinical practice.

Objective: This study explored manual-based personalized intervention for mothers of children with SLD and/or ADHD, as possibly contributing to (a) mothers’ parenting-related emotional/coping resources, (b) family functioning, and (c) child adjustment, compared with a control group of mothers. Method: Participants were 73 mothers of a child formally diagnosed with SLD and/or ADHD ages 7-17. Mothers were assigned to an experimental (n=40) or control (n=33) group. Short-term intervention utilized a three-stage emotion–cognition–behavior model. Pre-post assessments included maternal affective resources (positive/negative affect, parenting stress), maternal coping resources (general coping strategies, coping specifically with diagnosed child’s negative emotions), family cohesion/adaptability, and diagnosed child’s externalizing/internalizing syndromes. Results: Significant interactions emerged between group (experimental/control) and time (pre/post) for most study variables. Conclusion: Findings clearly revealed the intervention’s significant impact. Only the trained mothers demonstrated significant gains over time for most of the maternal, family, and child indices, whereas the untrained mothers did not.

Abstract: Coping is defined by actions of self-regulation of emotions, cognitions, behaviors, and motivational orientation under stress. This study analyzed the maternal coping with hospitalization of premature and low birth weight infants at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), using the Motivational Theory of Coping. A questionnaire, a scale and an interview were applied to 25 mothers three times between birth and hospital discharge. The results showed that the mothers’ first visit to the NICU had strong emotional impact; longer hospitalization periods were linked to the decrease in Delegation coping strategies. There was more Support Seeking after the hospital discharge. Multiparous mothers and those who had a job appeared to be more vulnerable to stress. Predominantly adaptive coping responses were identified, even among two mothers whose babies had died, including Self-Reliance strategies, which were mediated by religious beliefs.
