Background and Aim: There is paucity of data regarding the epidemiology of pediatric IBD in Asia compared to that of Western countries. We aimed to investigate the incidence and prevalence trends of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Daegu-Kyungpook province of South Korea from 2017 to 2020.Methods: This study was a multicenter, retrospective study conducted in eight IBD referral centers located in the Daegu-Kyungpook province. Children and adolescents of ≤18 years who were initially diagnosed with IBD between 2017 and 2020 were included. The annual number of children and adolescents newly diagnosed with IBD and the annual resident population of children and adolescents ≤18 years of age in the Daegu-Kyungpook province were investigated to calculate the annual incidence and prevalence in the region. Results: A total 304 children and adolescents that had been diagnosed with IBD were included in this study. Among these patients, 71.4% had been diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD), and 28.6% with ulcerative colitis (UC). The population based annual incidences of IBD from 2017 to 2020 were each 7.24, 6.82, 10.27, and 13.33 per 100,000, respectively (P for trend <0.001), 4.48, 5.26, 7.39, and 9.8 per 100,000, respectively, for CD (P for trend <0.001), and 2.76, 1.56, 2.88, and 3.53 per 100,000, respectively, for UC (P for trend = 0.174).Conclusion: Pediatric IBD, especially CD has significantly increased recently in the Daegu-Kyungpook province. Epidemiology studies from other regions of Asia are required to better elucidate this trend of increase in Asia.

In Pakistan, malnutrition is a chronic issue. Concerns regarding coexisting forms of malnutrition (CFM) in an individual child are emerging, as children suffering from CFM have a 4 to 12-fold higher risk of death compared with healthy children. This study assessed the prevalence, trends, and socioeconomic determinants of various types of CFM using Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) datasets. Data from children aged 0–5 years old, with complete height and weight information, and valid anthropometry, from all regions of Pakistan (except residents of Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), and non-de jure residents), were included. The prevalence of CFM was 30.6% in 2012–2013 and 21.5% in 2017–2018 PDHS. Both PDHSs reported a significantly higher prevalence of CFM in Sindh and Baluchistan compared with other regions of Pakistan. Improved socioeconomic status significantly reduced the odds of various types of CFM, except the coexistence of underweight with wasting. The high prevalence of CFM in Pakistan can be averted by multisectoral collaboration and by integrating nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific interventions.

Many efforts have been launched to promote breastfeeding in Korea. However, breastfeeding trends and associated factors with breastfeeding in Korea remain unknown. This study aimed to examine trends and determinants in breastfeeding using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2010–2018). We analyzed data from the KNHANES V (2010–2012), VI (2013–2015), and VII (2016–2018). A total of 9232 women aged 19–49 years were included in this study. We performed multivariable logistic regression analyses to investigate breastfeeding prevalence trends and associated factors with breastfeeding. Compared to 2010–2012, the odds ratio associated with breastfeeding during 2013–2015 and 2016–2018 increased to 1.30 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.11–1.51) and 1.40 (95% CI: 1.21–1.63), respectively. The breastfeeding rate was associated with 40–49 years (OR, 95% CI: 0.47, 0.34–0.64 compared to 19–29 years), richer and poorer income (1.20, 1.03–1.39 in richer group and 1.24, 1.05–1.46 in poorer group compared to richest group), education level (0.74, 0.65–0.86 in ≤12 years of education compared to ≥13 years of education), smoking status (1.77, 1.38–2.28 in non-smoking compared to smoking), and self-rated health (1.40, 1.14–1.70 in good and 1.20, 1.00–1.44 in average compared to bad). Education programs and policies such as the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) and mother-friendly workplaces are necessary to increase the rates of breastfeeding in these groups.

The prevalence rates of hereditary anemias in Saudi Arabia are remarkably high when compared to other countries. For instance, estimates show that the prevalence of thalassemia constitutes one of the highest rates globally. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that epidemiology significantly differs between the different regions across the Kingdom. Therefore, many epidemiological investigations were conducted. In this context, it has been demonstrated that the prevalence of thalassemia ranges from 0.4% to 5.9% in the Northern and Eastern regions, respectively. In the present literature review, we have discussed the different findings of epidemiological studies that studied the epidemiology of hereditary anemias in Saudi Arabia. We mainly discussed the epidemiology of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), sickle cell disease, and thalassemia. Recent evidence indicates that the trends of β-thalassemia are significantly decreasing over the past years. On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that the prevalence trends of sickle cell disease is constant over the past years. G6PD is also highly prevalent in Saudi Arabia. However, recent evidence is lacking in the literature and needs to be updated by future investigations. Consanguineous marriage has been reported to be an important risk factor for the high prevalence of β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease across the Kingdom.

Background: Several factors are reported to be associated with palliative care utilization among patients with various cancers, but literature is lacking on multiple myeloma (MM) specific factors. MM patients have a high symptom burden and early involvement of palliative could increase their quality of life. We examined factors associated with palliative care utilization among MM patients and explored prevalence trends in palliative care utilization among patients with MM. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using the National Inpatient Sample data collected between 2016 and 2018. Descriptive analyses were used to explore prevalence trends in palliative care utilization over time. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine sociodemographic and hospital-level factors associated with palliative care utilization in MM patients. Results: Overall prevalence of palliative care utilization in our population was 7.7% with a trend of increasing use of palliative care from 7.3% in 2016 to 8.2% in 2018. MM patients aged 70 years and above had 1.30 times higher odds (95% CI: 1.20-1.42) of receiving palliative care relative to those younger than 70 years. Compared to non-Hispanic whites, non-Hispanic blacks (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 0.86; 95% CI: 0.79-0.94) were less likely to utilize palliative care. Patients on Medicaid (AOR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.08-1.49), private insurance (AOR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.16-1.39) and other insurance types (AOR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.79-2.47) had significantly higher odds of receiving palliative care when compared to those on Medicare. Other factors identified were hospital region, location, patient disposition, admission type, length of stay, and number of comorbidities. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the urgent need for education of hospital physicians on the need for early palliative care involvement in the care of hospitalized MM patients. Messaging interventions such as the delivery of pop-up messages in electronic medical records to serve as reminders for physicians can be explored as a potential way to increase palliative care consultations for patients who need them.
