Abstract The yielding transition of amorphous materials is studied with a two-dimensional Hamiltonian model that allows both shear and volume deformations. The model is investigated as a function of the relative value of the bulk modulus B with respect to the shear modulus μ. When the ratio B/μ is small enough, the yielding transition becomes discontinuous, yet reversible. If the system is driven at constant strain rate in the coexistence region, a spatially localized shear band is observed while the rest of the system remains blocked. The crucial role of volume fluctuations in the origin of this behavior is clarified in a mean field version of the model.

Invertor as a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) to provide virtual inertia and damping can improve the stability of a microgrid, in which the damping is one of the fundamental problems in dynamics. From the view of the Hamiltonian dynamics, this paper researches the damping formation mechanism and damping injection control of VSG. First, based on the energy composition and dynamic characteristics of VSG, the differential equations system of VSG is established and is transformed into the generalized Hamiltonian system. Second, the effects of the three parameters of VSG, the damping coefficient D, active power droop coefficient, and time constant of excitation TE on damping characteristics are researched from a dynamic perspective, and simulation research is carried out with an isolated microgrid. Lastly, the control design method of Hamiltonian structure corrections used to add the damping factor and design the equivalent control inject damping to improve the stability of the isolated microgrid. Research shows that the voltage and frequency stability of the isolated microgrid can be effectively improved by selecting three key parameters of VSG and damping injection control. The innovations of this paper are 1. The Hamiltonian model of the inverter is deduced and established by taking the inverter as a virtual generator. 2. Based on the Hamiltonian model, damping characteristics of inverter in the microgrid are studied. 3. Hamiltonian structure correction method is applied to the inverter, and equivalent damping injection is designed to improve the stability of the microgrid.

AbstractRecent attempts to understand the origin of social fragmentation on the basis of spin models include terms accounting for two social phenomena: homophily—the tendency for people with similar opinions to establish positive relations—and social balance—the tendency for people to establish balanced triadic relations. Spins represent attribute vectors that encode G different opinions of individuals whose social interactions can be positive or negative. Here we present a co-evolutionary Hamiltonian model of societies where people minimise their individual social stresses. We show that societies always reach stationary, balanced, and fragmented states, if—in addition to homophily—individuals take into account a significant fraction, q, of their triadic relations. Above a critical value, $$q_c$$ q c , balanced and fragmented states exist for any number of opinions.

We investigate the properties of foliated gauge fields and construct several foliated field theories in 3+1d that describe foliated fracton orders both with and without matter, including the recent hybrid fracton models. These field theories describe Abelian or non-Abelian gauge theories coupled to foliated gauge fields, and they fall into two classes of models that we call the electric models and the magnetic models. We show that these two classes of foliated field theories enjoy a duality. We also construct a model (using foliated gauge fields and an exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonian model) for a subsystem-symmetry protected topological (SSPT) phase, which is analogous to a one-form symmetry protected topological phase, with the subsystem symmetry acting on codimension-two subregions. We construct the corresponding gauged SSPT phase as a foliated two-form gauge theory. Some instances of the gauged SSPT phase are a variant of the X-cube model with the same ground state degeneracy and the same fusion, but different particle statistics.

In quantum information and quantum computation, a bipartite system provides a basic few-body framework for investigating significant properties of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. A Hamiltonian model for a bipartite system is introduced to analyze the important role of interaction between bipartite subsystems in quantum non-equilibrium thermodynamics. We illustrate discrimination between such quantum thermodynamics and classical few-body non-equilibrium thermodynamics. By proposing a detailed balance condition of the bipartite system, we generally investigate the properties of the entropy and heat of our model, as well as the relation between them.

A diesel engine is a typical dynamic system. In this paper, a dynamics method is proposed to establish the Hamiltonian model of the diesel engine, which solves the main difficulty of constructing a Hamiltonian function under the multi-field coupling condition. Furthermore, the control method of Hamiltonian model structure modification is introduced to study the control of a diesel engine. By means of the principle of energy-shaping and Hamiltonian model structure modification theories, the modified energy function is constructed, which is proved to be a quasi-Lyapunov function of the closed-loop system. Finally, the control laws are derived, and the simulations are carried out. The study reveals the dynamic mechanism of diesel engine operation and control and provides a new way to research the modeling and control of a diesel engine system.
