Reuse of organic waste from Eucalyptus globulus extract with high reducing potential in the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles

The research provides a new and sustainable methodology for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles, using Eucalyptus globulus extract, this due to the fact that it presents metabolites capable of acting as a reducing potential of our silver nitrate precursor, and thus obtaining nanostructured material. This is also associated with the reuse of this type of organic material, which currently abounds as waste in the Peruvian highlands. In the specific case of this research, the effect on the stability over time of the biosynthesized silver nanoparticles was evaluated by varying the pH, with values of 4.82, 8.05 and 10.15. It was observed that as the pH increases the production of nanoparticles is higher, having a saturation threshold close to pH 8. It was also found that for alkaline pH close to 10 a more complete reaction of the reducing agent occurs, but with a high dispersion.

Optimization of Green Synthesis Approach of Silver Nanoparticles Using Indonesian Wild Honey

In this work, silver nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized using simple and environmentally friendly ‘green synthesis’ method using Indonesian wild honey as mediator. Particle count and size can be optimized by varying the silver nitrate precursor and honey concentration, with the help of sodium hydroxide as pH regulator. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) result, crystalline structure of Ag has been confirmed in sample with impurities from AgCl. Based on dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results, it was found that the smallest average particles size of AgNPs (117.5 nm from DLS and 11.1 nm from TEM) was obtained at sample with 5% w/v of honey and 0.5 mM of AgNO3.

Bacteria-Mediated Synthesis of Silver and Silver Chloride Nanoparticles and Their Antimicrobial Activity

Within the frame of this work, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and silver chloride nanoparticles (AgCl NPs) as mediated by microbes has been investigated. The nanoparticles were reduced from a silver nitrate precursor by the presence of bacteria, like Raoultella planticola and Pantoea agglomerans. The results show that the characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption band occurs at about 440 nm. Nanoparticles were also characterized with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which showed the formation of spherical Ag/AgCl NPs with a centered cubic crystal structure and a mean particle size of around 10–50 nm. Assays for antimicrobial activity of the biosynthesized nanoparticles demonstrated meaningful results against microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Salmonella, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Furthermore, this study shows that the combination of the obtained nanoparticles with standard antibiotics may be useful in the fight against emerging microbial drug resistance.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of RuO2 doped LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 cathode material for Lithium-ion battery

LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 as a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries was synthesized by a sol-gel method using nitrate precursor calcined at 800°C for 10 hours. The crystallite nature of samples is confirmed from X-ray diffraction analysis. SEM and TEM analyses were used to investigate the surface morphology of the prepared samples. It was found that, highly crystalline polyhedral RuO2 nanoparticles are well doped on the surface of pristine LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 with a size of about approximately 200 nm. The chemical composition of the prepared samples was characterized by EDX and XPS analyses. The electrochemical performance of the proposed material was studied by cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge analyses. The electrode kinetics of the samples was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The developed RuO2 doping may provide an effective strategy to design and synthesize the advanced electrode materials for lithium ion batteries. The doping strategy has dramatically increased the capacity retention from 74 % to 90% with a high discharge capacity of 251.2 mAhg− 1. 3 % RuO2-doped LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 cathode materials have showed the similar characteristics of two potential plateaus obtained at 2.8 and 4.2 V compared with un doped electrode cathode material. These results revealed the enhanced performance of RuO2- doped LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 during insertion and extraction of lithium ions compared to pristine material.

The Formation of Perovskite during the Combustion of an Energy-Rich Glycine–Nitrate Precursor

The effect of different regimes of combustion of glycine–nitrate precursors on the formation of perovskite phases (LaMnO3 and LaCrO3) without additional heat treatment was studied. The following three combustion regimes were compared: the traditional solution combustion synthesis (SCS), volume combustion synthesis (VCS) using a powdered precursor, and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) using a precursor pellet. The products of combustion were studied using a series of physicochemical methods (attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermal analysis). SHS was found to be the most productive regime for the formation of perovskite because of its ability to develop high temperatures in the reaction zone, which led to a reduced content of the thermally stable lanthanum carbonate impurities and to an increased yield and crystallite size of the perovskite phase. The reasons for the better crystallinity and purity of LaCrO3 as compared with LaMnO3 is also discussed, namely the low temperatures of the onset of the thermolysis, the fast rate of combustion, and the favorable thermodynamics for the achievement of high temperatures in the reaction zone.
