This contribution belongs to a larger empirical study that focuses on issues related to the implementation of inquiry-based learning and formative assessment in science and mathematics education, while it also refers to the issue of STEM education. Here, we discuss the two topics from the perspective of professional preparation of primary school teachers. We employ an educational tool called Concept Cartoons and perceive it as a common diagnostic tool for investigating modes of reasoning about general statements in arithmetic, geometry and biology. The presented qualitative exploratory empirical study maps and codes various kinds of reasoning that can be identified with the tool and investigates possibilities of a joint coding procedure. As a result, it provides a conversion table between various modes of reasoning in the three subject domains. The arisen code categories cover the field of generic examples, including the initial stages so that they can be used for scaffolding the process of learning the foundations of deductive reasoning. The joint approach to reasoning in mathematics and biology shows how argumentation and formative assessment can be understood equally and developed simultaneously in both school subjects. It helps us to see how the two school subjects can be integrated didactically.

AbstractIn this study, the stopping-power ratios (SPRs) of mouthpiece materials were measured and the errors in the predicted SPRs based on conversion table values were further investigated. The SPRs of the five mouthpiece materials were predicted from their computed tomography (CT) numbers using a calibrated conversion table. Independently, the SPRs of the materials were measured from the Bragg peak shift of a carbon-ion beam passing through the materials. The errors in the SPRs of the materials were determined as the difference between the predicted and measured values. The measured SPRs (errors) of the Nipoflex 710™ and Bioplast™ ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymers (EVAs) were 0.997 (0.023) and 0.982 (0.007), respectively. The SPRs of the vinyl silicon impression material, light-curable resin, and bis-acrylic resin were 1.517 (0.134), 1.161 (0.068), and 1.26 (0.101), respectively. Among the five tested materials, the EVAs had the lowest SPR errors, indicating the highest human-tissue equivalency.

AbstractCalculation of levodopa-equivalent dose in Parkinson’s disease has become common in research, but is also a useful tool in clinical practice, especially when initiating device-aided treatments (deep brain stimulation, apomorphine and levodopa infusions). The aim with the present calculator is to provide an updated conversion table, including dose calculation of the recently developed levodopa/entacapone/carbidopa intestinal gel infusion. Future versions of the calculator should be made conducive to learning by means of artificial intelligence.

This study aimed to analyze the validity categories and the effectiveness of preview-review bilingual instructional tools with discovery learning model setting in enhancing conceptual understanding and speaking ability. This study was research and development (R & D) using ADDIE developmental model consisting of analyzing, design, develop, implementation, and evaluation. The data collection was done through non-test techniques using product validation sheets, learning observational sheet, and observational sheet for speaking ability and test techniques using an assessment sheet for measuring conceptual understanding. The validity of preview-review bilingual instructional tools with discovery learning model setting was analyzed qualitatively based on 5-point scale conversion table. The effectiveness of preview-review bilingual instructional tools with discovery learning model setting in the implementation stage was analyzed based on the average of the gain score. The result showed that the validity of preview-review bilingual instructional tools with discovery learning model setting was 3.60 for the content and 3.55 for the language which is in very good category and the developed of preview-review bilingual instructional tools with discovery learning model setting was effective in enhancing conceptual understanding and speaking ability based on average gain score.

The physiology of the patient can be reflected by various data. Serious games, using an intelligent combination, could be based on this data to adjust to the specificities of the patient. Rehabilitation would therefore be personalized to the patient. This smart suit would use dry electrodes in order to be easily usable. Before performing dry electrode validation tests on a population, it is necessary to perform preliminary tests on a phantom. Agar-Agar (AA) gel, combined with NaCl and graphite which directly impact the resistivity and reactance values of the phantom, are generally used. Depending on the part of the body simulated by the phantom, it is necessary to adapt the concentrations of NaCl and graphite in order to obtain values of physiological reactance and resistance. The anisotropy of a muscle must also be considered. Different concentrations of NaCl and graphite have been tested in order to present charts linking the concentrations to the resistance and reactance values of the AA phantom. Electrical properties similar to those of human quadriceps are achieved at a concentration of 7 g/L of NaCl and 60 g/L of graphite. These values can be used as a conversion table to develop an AA phantom with electrical properties similar to different muscles. Furthermore, an AA phantom has an anisotropy of 0° and 90°. This anisotropy corresponds to a human quadriceps, where 0° is the direction of the muscle fiber. This will allow us to study and characterize the behavior of the electrodes on an anisotropic model. Thus it can be used as a first test phase for dry electrodes in order to propose the most suitable conditions for a connected garment application.

AbstractTo develop the Symptom Questionnaire for Visual Dysfunctions (SQVD) and to perform a psychometric analysis using Rasch method to obtain an instrument which allows to detect the presence and frequency of visual symptoms related to any visual dysfunction. A pilot version of 33 items was carried out on a sample of 125 patients from an optometric clinic. Rasch model (using Andrich Rating Scale Model) was applied to investigate the category probability curves and Andrich thresholds, infit and outfit mean square, local dependency using Yen’s Q3 statistic, Differential item functioning (DIF) for gender and presbyopia, person and item reliability, unidimensionality, targeting and ordinal to interval conversion table. Category probability curves suggested to collapse a response category. Rasch analysis reduced the questionnaire from 33 to 14 items. The final SQVD showed that 14 items fit to the model without local dependency and no significant DIF for gender and presbyopia. Person reliability was satisfactory (0.81). The first contrast of the residual was 1.908 eigenvalue, showing unidimensionality and targeting was − 1.59 logits. In general, the SQVD is a well-structured tool which shows that data adequately fit the Rasch model, with adequate psychometric properties, making it a reliable and valid instrument to measure visual symptoms.

Objective The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination-2 (MMSE-2) are useful psychometric tests for cognitive screening. Many clinicians want to predict the MMSE-2 score based on the MoCA score. To facilitate the transition from the MoCA to the MMSE-2, this study developed a conversion method. Methods This study retrospectively examined the relationship between the MoCA and MMSE-2. Overall, 303 participants were evaluated. We produced a conversion table using the equipercentile equating method with log-linear smoothing. Then, we evaluated the reliability and accuracy of this algorithm to convert the MoCA to the MMSE-2. Results MoCA scores were converted to MMSE-2 scores according to a conversion table that achieved a reliability of 0.961 (intraclass correlation). The accuracy of this algorithm was 84.5% within 3 points difference from the raw score. Conclusions This study reports a reliable and easy conversion algorithm for transforming MoCA scores into converted MMSE-2 scores. This method will greatly enhance the utility of existing cognitive data in clinical and research settings.

BackgroundQuality-adjusted life years (QALYs) are widely used to measure the impact of various diseases on both the quality and quantity of life and in their economic valuations. It will be clinically important and informative if we can estimate QALYs based on measurements of depression severity.ObjectiveTo construct a conversion table from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the most frequently used depression scale in recent years, to the Euro-Qol Five Dimensions Three Levels (EQ-5D-3L), one of the most commonly used instruments to assess QALYs.MethodsWe obtained individual participant data of randomised controlled trials of internet cognitive-behavioural therapy which had administered depression severity scales and the EQ-5D-3L at baseline and at end of treatment. Scores from depression scales were all converted into the PHQ-9 according to the validated algorithms. We used equipercentile linking to establish correspondences between the PHQ-9 and the EQ-5D-3L.FindingsIndividual-level data from five trials (total N=2457) were available. Subthreshold depression (PHQ-9 scores between 5 and 10) corresponded with EQ-5D-3L index values of 0.9–0.8, mild major depression (10–15) with 0.8–0.7, moderate depression (15–20) with 0.7–0.5 and severe depression (20 or higher) with 0.6–0.0. A five-point improvement in PHQ-9 corresponded approximately with an increase in EQ-5D-3L score by 0.03 and a ten-point improvement by approximately 0.25.Conclusions and Clinical ImplicationsThe conversion table between the PHQ-9 and the EQ-5D-3L scores will enable fine-grained assessment of burden of depression at its various levels of severity and of impacts of its various treatments.
