The aim of this research was to examine graduate thesis studies conducted in the field of special education in Turkey about special education teachers in terms of various variables. In the thesis scanning center of the Council of Higher Education Center (YOK), it was determined that 89 graduate thesis studies in the special education field were conducted. Yet, due to the reason that six of them did not have access permissions, 83 graduate thesis studies were examined. Of the postgraduate thesis examined, 79 of them are master's and four are doctoral dissertations. As a result of the research, it was determined that most of the graduate thesis studies were conducted in 2019. Moreover, when the distribution of universities is examined it has been observed that most of the graduate thesis were studied at Necmettin Erbakan University and Marmara University, and most of the thesis advisor titles are Assist. Prof. Dr. It was concluded that most of the postgraduate thesis were carried out in the Special Education Department and when the methods used in the studies were examined, it was noted that the quantitative method was preferred the most. Considering the research models used in the studies, it was concluded that the correlational survey model was used the most and the sources used in the graduate thesis were mainly domestic sources.

Abstract Helping engineering graduate students to write their thesis can be a difficult and time-consuming undertaking for a thesis advisor. Efficiency can be gained by having an experienced graduate student thesis advisor help multiple students at the same time. This article describes the philosophy, methods, and course design details used to develop and conduct a graduate level course on “thesis proposal development” for engineering students. The course provides structure to encourage students to engage in research and write their thesis proposal. The thesis proposal contains the student's detailed research plans and serves as the foundation for the student's final thesis. Each element of the course is described in detail with enough information that readers can implement the course at their own institution using this article as a guide. It includes detailed descriptions of individual assignments, reasons for including the assignment in the course, and Supplemental Material on the ASME Digital Collection which is downloadable from the journal. Since implementing this at our university, we have observed improvements in graduate student research projects, better written theses, and earlier thesis defense dates. The changes were implemented without altering the number of credit hours needed to graduate and we believe that the change has been beneficial.

Two decades ago, a personally-addressed ten-page survey printed on salmon-colored stock appeared in my campus mailbox. An accompanying letter explained that the sender was a student collecting data for a graduate-level thesis and included contact information for the thesis advisor … in marketing. It was the one and only ‘Consumer Durable Goods Study’ I would ever receive as an applied linguist.

Self-regulation is an ability that helps the students to maintain their effort in achieving their goals. In self-regulation, students can plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning process. Self-regulation encompasses many aspects. One of them is motivation. Motivation is considered as one of the important aspects of the learning process. Concerning the educational context in Indonesia, thesis writing course is a compulsory course. However, students are required to do the task independently. Therefore, students have to be self-regulated learners during the process of thesis writing. This study aims to investigate students’ motivation-regulation strategies in thesis writing. There were 9 participants involved in this study. The participants were students of English Language and Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. This study belongs to mixed-method research. Questionnaire and interview were used as instruments to collect the data. The results of this study revealed that the participants used some motivation-regulation strategies, namely, self-consequating, environmental structuring, goal-oriented self-talk, interest enhancement, and attribution control. Additionally, the majority of the participants were apt to procrastinate writing their thesis. The implications are provided for undergraduate students, thesis advisor, and future researchers.

This study aims to determine the magnitude of the relationship between the leadership style of madrasa principals and work discipline with the performance of teachers in MTsN Lima Puluh Batu Bara District. The sample of this research was determined by 42 people (total sampling). The data collection tool used a Likert scale questionnaire. The questionnaire was arranged based on variable indicators and examined by the Thesis Advisor, then tested on respondents who were not research samples. After testing the instrument, it is known that all X1 instruments consisted of 37 valid items 21 items, variable X2 consisted of 26 valid items 24 items and Y consisted of 40 valid items 24 items. Test requirements for data analysis of variables X1, X2 and Y are known that all variables are normally distributed, so that linearity testing and linearity test results can be found, it turns out that the regression between variables X1 with Y and X2 with Y is also linear with p values <0.05. Shows that: First, the transformational leadership style of madrasa principals is positively and significantly related to the performance of teachers in MTsN Lima Puluh Batu Bara District. In the research hypothesis test, obtained correlation X1 with Y of 0.379. Second, work discipline is positively and significantly related to teacher performance in MTsN Lima Puluh Batu Bara District. In the research hypothesis test, obtained correlation X2 with Y of 0.374. Third, the madrasa head transformational leadership style and work discipline together are positively and significantly related to the performance of teachers in MTsN Lima Puluh Madrasah, Batu Bara District. In the research hypothesis test, obtained correlation X1 and X2 together with Y of 0.554.

Nancy Grace Roman

Dear readers: We are sad to report that, soon after submitting her draft manuscript for this prefatory chapter, Nancy Grace Roman passed away on December 25, 2018. This final version of her memoir has been lightly edited but remains very true to the original. However, an Abstract was missing. Rather than trying to synthesize one in Nancy Grace's inimitable style, we take this opportunity to comment briefly on her life and its significance. Nancy Grace Roman was born in 1925 and came of age scientifically in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s. Together with the equally fascinating prefatory by Vera Rubin ( ARAA, Vol. 49), which we also recommend to you, these two memoirs give us intimate insight into the obstacles faced by women astronomers trying to rise in the field during those years. Roman's memoir is bitingly candid, recounting numerous snubs by teachers, insultingly small salaries, and attempts by her thesis advisor to simultaneously exploit her scientific findings and smother her role in them. Discouragement at every turn from doing forefront research is what drove Roman into government service, where she found a niche and blossomed as one of the visionary founders of the US civilian space program. We do not know what impact Roman might have had as a researcher with access to the world's largest telescopes, but we do know that her influence as an enabler of other people's science was vast. Her sobriquet as the “Mother of Hubble,” bestowed by admirer Ed Weiler, is well deserved. Nancy Grace granted an audio interview to Joss Bland-Hawthorn on August 4, 2018, just a few months before her passing. It captures her persona more vividly than mere words on paper, and we recommend the online recording to you at https://www.annualreviews.org/r/nancy-grace-roman-interview .

Thesis writing problem at XYZ University has emerged since a few years ago. Therefore, this study aims to understand the existing conditions in the field regarding stress conditions, causes, coping strategies, and expected social support. This research uses the mixed methodology, involving XYZ University students who cannot complete their thesis in two semesters (including “Seminar”). Based on data from 84 students who participated, is known that the main obstacles are difficult in writing down ideas to a scientific form, bad relationship with the thesis advisor, courses that should be taken, and emergency psychological disorders symptoms. Furthermore, the most used coping strategy is emotional-focused coping. While the most expected social support is emotional support, networking (e.g., study groups) and information (e.g., feedback, discussion, and suggestions), qualitative data shows that "deadline" is essential to motivate students in completing a thesis. This research provides an intervention plan to help the students to complete their thesis. For example, the university manager can provide a system and providing facilities that can help these students to complete their thesis. Also, it also requires an emphasis on scientific writing tasks carried out in small groups or individually to students, with the aim of honing students' scientific writing skills before finally taking thesis.
