AbstractAs global travel emerges from the pandemic, pent up interest in travel will lead to consumers making their choice between global destinations. Instagram is a key source of destination inspiration. DMO marketing success on this channel relies on projecting a destination image that resonates with this target group. However, usual text-based marketing intelligence on this channel does not work as content is consumed first and foremost as a visual projection. The author has built a deep learning based visual classifier for destination image measurement from photos. In this paper, we compare projected and perceived destination images in Instagram photography for four of the most Instagrammed destinations worldwide. We find that whereas the projected destination image aligns well to the perceived image, there are specific aspects of the destinations that are of more interest to Instagrammers than reflected in the current destination marketing.

Abstract. Urban architectural heritage as a part of cultural heritage, its surrounding buildings will have a certain visual impact on the cultural heritage itself. This paper presents a method for calculating visual impact and applies it to the field of urban architectural heritage. In this method, the visual radius and visual range are calculated based on the theoretical knowledge related to the range of human eye line of sight and the curvature of the earth, and then the visual projection plane is established. Then, through skyline analysis and spatial relationship calculation, the urban architectural heritage and its surrounding buildings are projected. Calculate the visual impairment index through the projection area and the projection surface area to quantify the visual impact. By calculating the visual impact in The Lama Temple area, it is proved that the method presented in this paper is effective and advanced in practical application.

In April 2017, the Chinese government announced a plan to establish a national new district: the Xiong’an New Area (hereinafter referred to as Xiong’an). Xiong’an plays a major role in optimizing the layout of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster, promoting the rapid development of regional cities and cultivating new drivers of innovative economy. As a result, Xiong’an is recognized in China as a millennium plan and a project with national significance. At this time, the scientific and forward-looking preliminary research work from more different fields will become important support to ensure the healthy development of Xiong’an. Taking the material cultural heritages of Xiong’an as a beacon, this paper makes a detailed depiction of the forms and features of the human space in Xiong’an in different stages during the ancient times. Multiple instruments were combined to realize the depiction, including archeological methods, geographical methods, and sociological methods. The results show that, on the vast North China Plains, with Baiyangdian Lake as the center, different social, political, and cultural factors have a huge impact on the social conditions, humanities activities, and heritage survival. Finally, based on the existing heritages, a visual projection was established between the ancient human space and the spatial distribution of potential heritages and used to predict the probability distribution of potential heritages in Xiong’an. The research results provide a scientific and forward-looking guide for the protection of material cultural heritages in the upcoming massive construction of Xiong’an.

Rapid eye movements (saccades) incessantly shift objects across the retina. To establish object correspondence, the visual system is thought to match surface features of objects across saccades. Here, we show that an object’s intrasaccadic retinal trace—a signal previously considered unavailable to visual processing—facilitates this match making. Human observers made saccades to a cued target in a circular stimulus array. Using high-speed visual projection, we swiftly rotated this array during the eyes’ flight, displaying continuous intrasaccadic target motion. Observers’ saccades landed between the target and a distractor, prompting secondary saccades. Independently of the availability of object features, which we controlled tightly, target motion increased the rate and reduced the latency of gaze-correcting saccades to the initial presaccadic target, in particular when the target’s stimulus features incidentally gave rise to efficient motion streaks. These results suggest that intrasaccadic visual information informs the establishment of object correspondence and jump-starts gaze correction.

AbstractBased on our previous phase II clinical trial of anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) antibody nivolumab for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (n = 19, UMIN000005714), we aimed to identify the biomarkers predictive of response. Tumor gene expression was evaluated by proliferative, mesenchymal, differentiated, and immunoreactive gene signatures derived from high-grade serous carcinomas and a signature established prior for ovarian clear cell carcinoma. Resulting signature scores were statistically assessed with both univariate and multivariate approaches for correlation to clinical response. Analyses were performed to identify pathways differentially expressed by either the complete response (CR) or progressive disease (PD) patient groups. The clear cell gene signature was scored significantly higher in the CR group, and the proliferative gene signature had significantly higher scores in the PD group where nivolumab was not effective (respective p values 0.005 and 0.026). Combinations of gene signatures improved correlation with response, where a visual projection of immunoreactive, proliferative, and clear cell signatures differentiated clinical response. An applicable clinical response prediction formula was derived. Ovarian cancer-specific gene signatures and related pathway scores provide a robust preliminary indicator for ovarian cancer patients prior to anti-PD-1 therapy decisions.

The Index of Illustrations is an integral part of the definitive guide “Literary Heritage For 80 Years. A Guide to Volumes 1–103 yrs. 1931–2011”. There are nearly 12,000 illustrations in 103 volumes of “Literary Heritage”. The search for content spanned small and large museums, archives, and libraries in Russia, with many illustrations published for the first time ever. Other materials were sourced from public and private collections within the country and from abroad. The resulting illustrative content in “Literary Heritage” forms a massive, powerful visual projection of Russian authors, aspects of their family and everyday life, the spectrum of cultural and political professions, and portraits of actors in life and as performers on the stages of domestic and foreign theaters. The authors emphasized reproducing autographs including unpublished manuscripts, letters, and dedications on photographs and in books. Of great importance is the replication of printed materials — illustrations from the works of Russian authors as representative examples of typography. Finally, we should highlight many illustrations that give the viewer an idea about the environment of the authors, including memorials and monuments. The Index of Illustrations serves as a key to this iconic collection of materials, cataloging cutlines in order of their appearance in the volumes and respective location within each book. Cutlines are expanded on the illustrations’ theme — the subjects of the portraits, the groups gathered for specific purposes, the authors of the manuscripts, etc. They indicate the artist or photographer of the original illustration and its current location (museum, archive, etc.). In addition, a cross-reference of over 7,000 names accompanies the Index.

Ascending visual projections similar to the mammalian thalamocortical pathway are found in a wide range of vertebrate species, but their homology is debated. To get better insights into their evolutionary origin, we examined the developmental origin of a thalamic-like sensory structure of teleosts, the preglomerular complex (PG), focusing on the visual projection neurons. Similarly to the tectofugal thalamic nuclei in amniotes, the lateral nucleus of PG receives tectal information and projects to the pallium. However, our cell lineage study in zebrafish reveals that the majority of PG cells are derived from the midbrain, unlike the amniote thalamus. We also demonstrate that the PG projection neurons develop gradually until late juvenile stages. Our data suggest that teleost PG, as a whole, is not homologous to the amniote thalamus. Thus, the thalamocortical-like projections evolved from a non-forebrain cell population, which indicates a surprising degree of variation in the vertebrate sensory systems.

Long-lasting internal states, like hunger, aggression, and sexual arousal, pattern ongoing behavior by defining how the sensory world is translated to specific actions that subserve the needs of an animal. Yet how enduring internal states shape sensory processing or behavior has remained unclear. In Drosophila, male flies will perform a lengthy and elaborate courtship ritual, triggered by activation of sexually-dimorphic P1 neurons, in which they faithfully follow and sing to a female. Here, by recording from males as they actively court a fictive ‘female’ in a virtual environment, we gain insight into how the salience of female visual cues is transformed by a male’s internal arousal state to give rise to persistent courtship pursuit. We reveal that the gain of LCt0a visual projection neurons is strongly increased during courtship, enhancing their sensitivity to moving targets. A simple network model based on the LCt0a circuit accurately predicts a male’s tracking of a female over hundreds of seconds, underscoring that LCt0a visual signals, once released by P1-mediated arousal, become coupled to motor pathways to deterministically control his visual pursuit. Furthermore, we find that P1 neuron activity correlates with fluctuations in the intensity of a male’s pursuit, and that their acute activation is sufficient to boost the gain of the LCt0 pathways. Together, these results reveal how alterations in a male’s internal arousal state can dynamically modulate the propagation of visual signals through a high-fidelity visuomotor circuit to guide his moment-to-moment performance of courtship.

This chapter describes how a simple activity can become an engaging experience with the use of a little technology. It explains the ease with which technology can be implemented it as long as the instructor is willing to put in a little bit of work. It mentions that thousands of resources exist to help the teacher to discover how to use visual projection systems in the classroom, and that many people are willing to help the instructor find what is right for him or her and his or her instructional needs. Projection systems are one of the first pieces of technology a teacher perfects in their instructional use. They are a necessary part of the educational environment for every educator in the digital generation.
