The adoption of recommender systems in online news personalization has made it possible to tailor the news stream to the individual interests of each reader. Previous research on commercial recommender systems has emphasized their use in large-scale media houses and technology companies, and real-world experiments indicate substantial improvements of click rates and user satisfaction. It is less understood how smaller media houses are coping with this new technology, how the technology affects their business models, their editorial processes, and their news production in general. Here we report on the experiences from numerous Scandinavian media houses that have experimented with various recommender strategies and streamlined their news production to provide personalized news experiences. In addition to influencing the content and style of news stories and the working environment of journalists, the news recommender systems have been part of a profound digital transformation of the whole media industry. Interestingly, many media houses have found it undesirable to automate the entire recommendation process and look for approaches that combine automatic recommendations with editorial choices.

<p><em><span>This study examines the barriers to online journalism in the 5.0 industry era in facing market competition. This research was conducted on suaramerdeka.com as a large newspaper company in Central Java that can still survive in the midst of global competition in the mass media competition. Critical perspective with Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis design used in this study. The novelty of this research is specifically to answer the challenges of online journalism in the era of the industrial revolution 5.0 in terms of human resources. The findings of this study are related to the routine of news production in the suaramerdeka.com media, the speed of news updates, the accuracy and balance of the news. The human resources of news seekers and editing teams are not yet fully prepared to face the challenges of the new era. The results of this study shows that 1) the news production dependent on HR factor, company factor and managing editor; 2) the news delivery planning dependent on the market need, the news content of the printed Suara Merdeka aims at fulfilling the needs of the people of Central Java, suaramerdeka.com seeks to meet the needs of the people of Central Java around the world.</span></em></p>

The presence of technology changes the way humans communicate in cyberspace compared to the real world. “Hootsuite We are social” research in January 2019 showed that there are approximately 150 million social media users in Indonesia or 56% of the total population. There has been an increase of 20 million social media users in Indonesia compared to last year. The extensive use of social media, including Twitter, is changing the news production platform. News is not only produced by mass media, but potentially by everyone who can produce reports, shape public opinion, and create a virtual society. This condition has a destructive power because it can quickly spread and provoke powerful emotions and heated discourse. This paper discusses the characteristics of Indonesian language impoliteness on Twitter using qualitative research methods. The data were collected from Twitter statuses of Indonesian users in 2018. The analysis showed that impoliteness in speech and language occurs because of the ideology and power of each speaker. The impolite speech in this research related to the impoliteness nuanced with contempt to ethnicity, religion, race, and to a social group. The impoliteness nuanced with insult to ethnicity was 20% of our observed samples, while impoliteness nuanced with religious contempt was 25.1%; impoliteness related to race was 18.3%; and impoliteness toward social groups was 36.6%. The impoliteness is also often caused by the stimulation of the occurring social and political causes at that time. Keywords: Impoliteness, contempt of ethnicity, religion, race, social groups.

This study investigates the epistemological implications of the appropriation of audience analytics in a data-driven news culture. Focussing on two central aspects of epistemology, epistemic value and epistemic practices, we ask two overall questions (1) How are audience metrics balanced and reconciled in relation to other standards in the justification of news as valuable knowledge? How are different practices of research and presentation, truth-seeking and truth-telling, prioritized in a news organization marked as a data-driven news work culture? The study presents a case study of a Scandinavian legacy news publisher that has pursued the embracing of a data-driven news work culture. It is based on a qualitative multi-method approach. The findings show how metrics are used as a superior standard in deciding on the epistemic value of news. This is expressed in strategies, guidelines and discussions in the newsroom, and put into practice in coaching, evaluations and rewarding of the performance of individual journalists. In the everyday news production, metrics are reconciled in relation to independent standards in journalism, related to the claims of news journalism to provide relevant and verified public knowledge about current events. Moreover, the study shows how the embracement of metrics radicalizes the focus on presentation, packaging and timing in the optimization of news material and in the valuing of professional practices. Efforts in research and truth seeking are more seldom explicitly valued. The work of fulfilling reasonable truth claims is mainly taken for granted.

Campus journalism is a place for students to develop their potential in the journalism field. Students who are agents of change not only provide quality news but also provide moral value in the news production process. Quality news can be raised through the role of a journalist in writing news (information). Prophetic journalism is a journalistic concept taken from the nature of the prophets. In this paper, we examine the application of the concept of prophetic journalism –journalism that imitates the prophetic characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad– among campus journalists. Prophet Muhammad is known for his four characteristics: siddiq (delivering accurate information), amanah (trustworthy as a source of information), tabligh (delivering information in its entirety), fathanah (a journalist is required to be smart in revealing the truth of the news). The data from this study is the result of observations from the daily life of the researcher when carrying out the news production process with other campus journalists ranging from electronic media (radio & television), print, and online. The results of this study indicate that campus journalists at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya apply prophetic journalism well. By implementing the prophetic characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad when carrying out journalistic activities, journalists can maintain the professionalism of journalists. By using ethnographic research methods or commonly referred to as field research, researchers make observations as the main data and are equipped with in-depth interviews with several campus journalists. We also propose the nature of Prophet Ibrahim to be incorporated into the concept of prophetic journalism as well. Prophet Ibrahim is known for the story of his courage to seek the truth and reveal it when everyone was against it. This courage is important in supporting journalistic activities among students and professionals.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo as in several African countries, the news are made by several national media institutions. From the collection stage to the diffusion of news, several stages of decision-making are requested. The objective of this study is to analyse the decision-making process in the news production, its stages, the departments involved and the factors influencing the decision-making stages of news between collection, processing, selection, dissemination and evaluation of news. To achieve the objective and to verify the assumptions, the study adopted the mixed methodology combining the collection of qualitative and quantitative data in the continuous or simultaneous approach to presentation of results. A literature search allowed for the design of the theoretical model and a semi-structured interview survey was conducted to collect relevant data in a non-probabilistic, occasional or intentional sample consisting of 26 journalists of the Congolese national radio-television. The activities of collection, processing, selection, diffusion as well as evaluation and monitoring of news are the stages of the news production. These steps can be grouped into three: design and elaboration of news, publications of news and feedback. This article explores the possibility of redefining professional news production in order to suspend the disseminators of disinformation. For achieving this goal, the author examined the areas of the likely distortion of information: headlines and editors of online news. Headlines play the key role within information ecosystem, since they can deceive the audience. This is acquired by using arresting phrases to draw attention of the audience. It is determined that some editors of online news do not observe certain ethical standards, and thus, post articles without verifying the accuracy of the material. It is noted that politicians have infiltrated the online media space, which affects that the editors choose what to post. It is recommended that headlines should not only be attractive, but also written in a way not to deceive the audience, as well as the extent of influence of the political figures upon media agenda should be established. And ultimately, the people who have no experience in journalism, should be trained by an experienced journalist in order to minimize the information pollution common to the era of Internet and social networks.
