This paper reports the diagnostic research of deteriorated paint layers from three mural panels made by Almada Negreiros found in the Alcântara Maritime Station in Lisbon. The aim was to understand the main decay phenomena to aid future conservation works. The methodology comprised in-situ analyses by technical photography in Vis, Vis-RaK and UVF, p-OM and h-EDXRF; micro sampling; OM, SEM-EDS, μ-XRD, μ-Raman, µ-FT-IR and Py-GC/MS. Preliminary results show that all the paint layers analyzed are affected by salts (alkali sulphates) that over time have caused flacking, lack of cohesion, erosion, and lacunae. The light greenish/greenish bluish paint layers in all three panels are the most affected. No organic binders were identified, only the presence of vinyl polymer in glossy paint surfaces.

Semiconductor materials based on metal high crosslinked-vinyl polymer composites were prepared through loading of Pd(OAc)2 on both Poly(ethylene-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate) (poly(EDMA)) and poly(ethylene-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (Poly(EDMA-co-MMA)). The thermochemical properties for both poly(EDMA) and poly(EDMA-co-MMA) were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis TGA technique. The dielectric permittivity, AC electrical conductivity and conduction mechanism for all the prepared polymers and their Pd(OAc)2 composites were studied. The results showed that the loading of polymers with Pd(OAc)2 led to an increase in the magnitudes of both the dielectric permittivity and AC electrical conductivity (σac). The value of σac increased from 1.38 × 10−5 to 5.84 × 10−5 S m−1 and from 6.40 × 10−6 to 2.48 × 10−5 S m−1 for poly(EDMA) and poly(EDMA-co-MMA), respectively, at 1 MHz and 340 K after loading with Pd(OAc)2. Additionally, all the prepared polymers and composites were considered as semiconductors at all the test frequencies and in the temperature range of 300–340 K. Furthermore, it seems that a conduction mechanism for all the samples could be Quantum Mechanical Tunneling (QMT).

Heat cured polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been used as denture bases since 1937. PMMA is a vinyl polymer, made by free radical vinyl polymerization from the monomer methyl methacrylate [1]. After the success of using as prosthetic material in the mouth, PMMA began to be used in other areas, for example in facial prosthetics, for facial epitheses. The facial epitheses are exposed permanently to ambiental changes (temperature, air currents, humidity). Secondary, for a better esthetic effect, in facial epitheses PMMA often contain variables quantities of natural fibers (cotton, wool). Our study has analyzed how a PMMA facial epithesis reacts to temperature changes during heat exposure in the summer, especially depending on the amount of fiber it contains, considering that the biological interface between the prosthesis and facial tissues is sensitive to heat [2].

Four vinyl polymer gels (VPGs) were synthesized by free radical polymerization of divinylbenzene, ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate, and copolymerization of divinylbenzene with styrene, and ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate with methyl methacrylate, as supports for palladium nanoparticles. VPGs obtained from divinylbenzene and from divinylbenzene with styrene had spherical shapes while those obtained from ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate and from ethane-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate with methyl methacrylate did not have any specific shapes. Pd(OAc)2 was impregnated onto VPGs and reduced to form Pd0 nanoparticles within VPGs. The structures of Pd0-loaded VPGs were analyzed by XRD, TEM, and nitrogen gas adsorption. Pd0-loaded VPGs had nanocrystals of Pd0 within and on the surface of the polymeric supports. Pd0/VPGs efficiently catalyzed the oxidation/disproportionation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde/toluene, where activity and selectivity between benzaldehyde and toluene varied, depending on the structure of VPG and the weight percentage loading of Pd0. The catalysts were stable and Pd leaching to liquid phase did not occur. The catalysts were separated and reused for five times without any significant decrease in the catalytic activity.
