The high longitudinal and lateral coherence of synchrotron X-rays sources radically transformed radiography. Before them, the image contrast was almost only based on absorption. Coherent synchrotron sources transformed radiography into a multi-faceted tool that can extract information also from “phase” effects. Here, we report a very simple description of the new techniques, presenting them to potential new users without requiring a sophisticated background in advanced physics. We then illustrate the impact of such techniques with a number of examples. Finally, we present the international collaboration SYNAPSE (Synchrotrons for Neuroscience—an Asia-Pacific Strategic Enterprise), which targets the use of phase-contrast radiography to map one full human brain in a few years.

Case series summary Gastric diverticulum (GD) is a rare condition that is described adequately in humans but has not been reported in cats. This case series describes six cats with GD, including three that were published in a previous abstract. All cats presented for a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including chronic vomiting, weight loss and anorexia, and underwent negative contrast radiography to diagnose GD. All but one cat underwent surgical resection of the GD via partial gastrectomy, while the remaining cat was euthanized. Resection of the GD was associated with reduction of reported clinical signs. Relevance and novel information Gastric diverticula have never been reported in the cat. Negative contrast radiography appears to be a superior imaging technique in the diagnosis of feline GD. In cats with a vague chronic history, including vomiting, anorexia and weight loss, GD should be considered among the differential diagnoses. Further study and more cases need to be identified to better assess clinical problems referable to GD in the absence of other comorbidities. Maine Coon cats with GD appear to be over-represented.

Background: Ureteral ectopia (or ectopic ureter) is a congenital anomaly of the urinary system in which the ureter inserts anywhere other than the vesical trigone. This anatomical change may have unilateral or bilateral involvement. The most evident clinical sign, occurring mostly in females, is urinary incontinence, however in some cases the condition may progress to nephritis and dilation of the renal pelvis. The diagnosis is established through imaging, and definitive treatment requires surgical approach. The present study reports a case of ureteral ectopia in a dog which was diagnosed by ultrasound and contrast radiography (excretory urography) and successfully treated by neoureterostomy.Case: A 10-month-old female American Pit Bull Terrier was attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA), in Mossoró, RN. Her owner reported incontinence of dark, malodorous urine since birth as the chief complaint. After clinical examination, cystitis was suspected, and a complete blood count, urinalysis, and abdominal ultrasound was requested. The blood count and creatinine were within the reference values. The presence of struvite crystals were found on urinalysis. Ultrasound examination revealed a tortuous, dilated right ureter from the renal pelvis to the urinary bladder; no uroliths were identified as a cause of potential obstruction, but the ipsilateral kidney showed increased cortical echogenicity, loss of corticomedullary definition, and moderate pelvic dilation. These findings supported a presumptive diagnosis of ectopic ureter. For the purpose of confirming this suspicion, excretory urography was performed, revealing unilateral ureteral dilation and radiopaque contrast uptake following the path of the urethra. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, surgery was performed to correct the ureteral ectopia using the standard neoureterocistostomy technique. Considering the unilateral involvement, location of the insertion, and preserved renal function, the decision was made to perform a neoureterostomy. During the surgery it was possible to identify that the ectopic ureter was found to be intramural. At 2-month follow-up, urinary incontinence had resolved and control ultrasound showed significant improvement in the inflammatory appearance of the right renal parenchyma, with no signs of dilation of the renal pelvis or ureter.Discussion: Different from what happens in male dogs, females with an ectopic ureter will often present with urinary incontinence as the main (and, often, only) symptom, usually in the first months of life. As pollakiuria suggests a wide range of diseases of the urinary tract, ultrasound was considered the first-line imaging modality of choice, indispensable for ruling out other differential diagnoses such as a severe urinary tract infection, urolithiasis, or even malignancy. Despite the literature reporting that urinary incontinence persists in 44 to 67% of cases of ureteral ectopia, even after surgery in this case there was complete recovery of the patient after two months. Accessible techniques like ultrasonography and contrast radiography (excretory urography) supplemented one another in the elucidation of this case, with both demonstrating an excellent contribution to the diagnosis of ectopic ureter as well as served as support for surgical planning, enabling effective repair and consequent recovery of the patient.

Gastroparesis is a condition characterized by delayed gastric emptying without evidence of mechanical obstruction in the stomach. Its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, early satiety, abdominal bloating, and abdominal pain. Most cases of gastroparesis are either idiopathic, due to diabetes mellitus, or post-surgical complications. The diagnosis of gastroparesis requires upper endoscopy, contrast radiography, or validated gastric scintigraphy. Gastroparesis is managed with nutritional support and treatment of any underlying disorders, such as diabetes. Pharmacological treatments have been tried, including prokinetics and novel medications. Interventions focused on the pylorus have shown promising results.

One of most accessible physical method of investigation in veterinary medicine is represented by the radiographic study. The contrast agents are used in veterinary radiology to highlight the anatomical structures. The contrast agents can absorb X-Ray and are used in special radiological procedures such as angiography, urography, myelography, contrast Computed Tomography or evaluation of gastrointestinal tract. The aim of the this paper was to perform a retrospective study to identify the complications associated with non-ionic contrast agents administration in dogs that undergo contrast radiography or contrast CT examination. Between January 2016 and January 2018, we selected a number of 234 dogs that were evaluated using contrast agents procedures (contrast radiography, contrast CT). A number of 192 cases had blood analysis before and after contrast administration and were included in the study. A Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus) was presented with regurgitation and passage of undigested seeds in the feces. Radiographic examination revealed dilatation of the proventriculus. Contrast radiography was performed and revealed that the proventricular dilatation and associated clinical signs resulted from circumferential thickening of the proventricular wall leading to severe narrowing of the lumen of the proventriculus. Testing for parrot bornavirus (PaBV) was negative. After the initiation of antimicrobial treatment because of suspected bacterial overgrowth, all clinical signs resolved two weeks after the start of the treatment, and radiographs taken four months after initial presentation revealed a normal appearance and size of the proventriculus. In the present case, bacterial proventriculitis associated with hyperplasia of the proventricular wall was put forward as a final but presumptive diagnosis highlighting the need to differentiate bacterial proventriculitis from other causes of proventricular dilatation in macaws.

There have been no reports of ruptured solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) into adjacent organs. A 22-year-old female was referred to our hospital for treatment of a pancreatic head tumor. Computed tomography (CT) examination at our hospital showed a 5-cm tumor containing air, although CT at a previous hospital revealed an 8-cm tumor without air. Thus, a spontaneous rupture of the tumor into the duodenum was suspected. Subtotal stomach preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy with combined resection of the portal vein was performed. Contrast radiography of resected specimen showed the medium injected into the tumor leaking out from the 2nd portion of the duodenum. Histologically, the patient was diagnosed as SPN. Microscopic invasion to the portal vein and duodenum were also confirmed. She did not experience any postoperative complications and has remained well without any signs of recurrence during 2 years of follow-up. Although there have been 14 studies reporting ruptured SPN, this is the first report of SPN that spontaneously ruptured into the duodenum. An extremely rare case of SPN of the pancreatic head that spontaneously ruptured into the duodenum was reported.
