The results of the application of a new hydrophobization agent based on a triethoxymethylsilane and standard starch aqueous mixture for mass-produced cellulosic materials—printing paper, paperboard, and sack paper—have been evaluated to examine whether such a mixture can be used in industrial practice. The application of this agent on laboratory sheets prepared in a repetitive recycling process was performed to investigate its influence on the formation and properties of the products, as well as the contamination of circulating water. Measurements of the water contact angle, Cobb tests, and water penetration dynamics (PDA) were performed to test the barrier properties of the resulting materials. The effects of the applied coatings and recycling process on the paper’s tensile strength, tear index, roughness, air permeance, and ISO brightness were studied. Studies have proven that this formulation imparts relatively high surface hydrophobicity to all materials tested (contact angles above 100°) and a significant improvement in barrier properties while maintaining good mechanical and optical performance. The agent also does not interfere with the pulping and re-forming processes during recycling and increases circulation water contamination to an acceptable degree. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra of the paper samples revealed the presence of a polysiloxane network on the surface.

Among emerging pollutants, endocrine disruptors such as estradiol are of most concern. Conventional water treatment technologies are not capable of removing this compound from water. This study aims to assess a method that combines physicochemical and biological strategies to eliminate estradiol even when there are other compounds present in the water matrix. Na-montmorillonite, Ca-montmorillonite and zeolite were used to remove estradiol in a medium with sulfamethoxazole, triclosan, and nicotine using a Plackett–Burman experimental design; each treatment was followed by biological filtration with Daphnia magna. Results showed between 40 to 92% estradiol adsorption in clays; no other compounds present in the mixture were adsorbed. The most significant factors for estradiol adsorption were the presence of nicotine and triclosan which favored the adsorption, the use of Ca-montmorillonite, Zeolite, and time did not favor the adsorption of estradiol. After the physicochemical treatment, Daphnia magna was able to remove between 0–93% of the remaining estradiol. The combination of adsorption and biological filtration in optimal conditions allowed the removal of 98% of the initial estradiol concentration.

We prepared chitosan (CHI) hydrogels reinforced with highly charged cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) by the desalting method. To this end, the screening of electrostatic interactions between CHI polycation and CNF polyanion was performed by adding NaCl at 0.4 mol/L to the chitosan acetate solution and to the cellulose nanofibrils suspension. The polyelectrolyte complexation between CHI polycation and CNF polyanion was then triggered by desalting the CHI/CNF aqueous mixture by multistep dialysis, in large excess of chitosan. Further gelation of non-complexed CHI was performed by alkaline neutralization of the polymer, yielding high reinforcement effects as probed by the viscoelastic properties of the final hydrogel. The results showed that polyelectrolyte association by desalting can be achieved with a polyanionic nanoparticle partner. Beyond obtaining hydrogel with improved mechanical performance, these composite hydrogels may serve as precursor for dried solid forms with high mechanical properties.
